Anxious Cat

Today had been an interesting day for Kutakia. Not because he'd run into an interesting leopardess, who'd seemed somewhat afraid of him at first but had eventually started to warm up to him before departing. Neither was it because he'd run into a grumpy Ratel earlier and had to apologise exactly thirty seven times. No - it was an interesting day - or perhaps he should say night - because he'd seen another shooting star.

Kuta loved shooting stars. They were so pretty, and almost seemed unreal when you saw them fall across the sky. The only thing he could remmber of his mother was what she'd told him about shooting stars. 'Kutakia, she'd said, 'Whenever you make a wish, however tiny, a star falls to the earth. Find that star, and your wish will come true'. He still believed it, and he'd always been searching for the shooting star he'd seen as a mere cub. But seeing others always made him smile - it meant others were getting a chance at their wishes becoming fulfilled too.

The moon was high in the sky as the leopard padded his way through the foreign jungle. He'd decided to travel today, and this was a totally new section of the jungle. He'd never been here before, and it was nice to see new sights. He'd greeted a hare he'd recently run into, and she'd been a very polite hare, albeit a little skittish. But that was to be expected, since he was a predator and she was usually the prey. Kuta wasn't currently hungry, though, due to having fed himself on a nice juicy waterbuck the day before. That had been a good kill. As for now, however, the male strolled leisurely through the jungle, searching for somewhere comfortable to stop for the night.

"Gah," a black and pink cheetah grumbled, eyes darting nervously overhead, his mouth drawn down in a sneer. "'nother shiny. 'nother one..." he mumbled quickly to himself, glancing at the night sky repeatedly as he walked.

Sellion had been in the jungle for weeks. He didn't know how he got there, why he first entered that place, or why he was still there. He simply was. That was all. And he didn't mind. Because he was clueless to mostly everything around him that wasn't very important. And to Sellion, something like where you are isn't that important. If he didn't like some place, he would leave, of course. Or if someone drove him out, that was fine, too. But as far as the crazy cheetah was concerned, the jungle wasn't bad, nor was it good. So he was merely there, existing.

But this new phenomenon of "shiny" things streaking across the sky had the male a tad on the paranoid side. His hair was bristled and his tail whipped behind him instead of floating behind him carelessly. So Sellion was on the move, searching for where these strange things landed; searching for their source. Because of this, Sellion wasn't watching where he was going.

And he almost ran head-long into a leopard.

Wheeling back, claws scraping the jungle floor noisily, Sellion nearly stood on his hind legs from the shock. He sat on his rump and stared, heart beating furiously.

...Was that a shiny?

The last thing Kuta was expecting this late at night, in a fairly dense area of jungle, was to run into someone else. And if it was someone else, he'd expected a leopard, for they were the majority cat in the jungles. But to run into a black and pink cheetah - quite literally - spooked the male greatly, and he himself leapt back a little, hair bristling lightly as he jaw instinctively began to form a snarl, amber eyes wide. Once he realized he wasn't in danger, however, his snarl faded, eyes narrowing a little to get a better look at the cheetah in the darkness.

Cheeks flushed a pale pink in mild embarrassment as he raised his gaze to meet that of Sellion's, attempting a smile. His heart was still racing, but the leopard managed a fond smile as he righted his posture, making it more relaxed. He watched the cheetah for a few moments, expecting him to speak, but when he didn't Kuta decided to start the conversation. "Heh, sorry. Didn't see you there! I'm Kutakia - Kuta for short."

Sellion's eyes lifted as his expression shifted to some sort of awe. It was like he hadn't expected the leopard to speak, and now that it had, it was some amazing thing. But Sellion only remained in that state for a few short moments until his "manners" caught up with him. Being that he grew up in a very strict household with a father who drilled the proper way to speak and introduce oneself into his mind, Sellion automatically replied to the leopard's introduction in the best way he knew.

"Good evening, Kuta." he said, drawling. He rose to his feet, head shifting in a nod of courtesy. "I am called Sellion."

The cheetah's pink eyes glinted with the reflection of a shooting star, and his head jerked up to gaze at the sky. His mouth opened and he stared, forgetting all about the leopard for a few moments.

The expression the cheetah pulled threw him for a little, forehead furrowing lightly in confusion. However, at the cheetah's own, polite introduction Kuta bowed his head a little, smiling all the way. He was being so polite! Kuta was beginning to warm to Sellion, and was looking forward to a nice conversation. Kutakia wasn't eh brightest of leopards in the box, but he still loved a good conversation. It was fun, and killed so much time! If he stayed up later, he could sleep in later. Sleeping to midday was the best feeling ever.

As the cheetah turned his gaze upwards, Kutakia followed it, his smile turning to a cheerful grin. Ah, the shooting star. Unable to stop himself, he began speaking, "Beautiful, isn't it? My mother always used to tell me that whenever you make a wish, a shooting star falls. And all you have to do is find the fallen star, and all your wishes and dreams will come true."

The voice of the brown leopard pulled Sellion back to reality. Well, however real the cheetah's reality was...

For a while, he stared open-mouthed at Kuta, somehow taking a very long time to process the words that were spoken to him. Maybe it was confusion. Or maybe it was shock. Or wonder? Whatever it was kept the cheetah silent for quite some time. But then there was a gleam in his eye and he smiled, his expression taking a devious turn.

"I...have made wishes." he said slowly, quietly. But in an instant he was surging with enthusiasm. "Are they coming true?!" he shouted excitedly. His head whipped around, searching every part of the jungle within his visual radius. But then...Sellion stopped looking at the jungle. Then...Sellion began looking at the leopard.

His head tilted to the side, so slowly it was hardly noticeable. And he stared, smiling, thinking...

The open-mouthed stare did freak Kuta out a little. He watched Sellion in confusion, even going as far as to begin to take a step back. Was the cheetah...alright? Was he ill, perhaps? It would certainly explain the strange behaviour. The devious turn in his expression freaked Kuta out also, but eventually Sellion replied, and Kuta managed to force a smile over his maw.

It soon faded, though. How was he supposed to know if they'd come true? Sellion was acting like...well, a small child. Maybe he'd hit his head or something. Wrinkling his nose a little, Kuta coughed, before replying, "Well...I don't know. Have they? Have you found your fallen star yet?"

Abruptly, the cheetah stood. His gaze was penetrating; almost all-knowing. It was as if he knew who and what Kuta was entirely, when he was really seeing him as something he wasn't. Unfortunately for Kuta, Sellion was absolutely convinced of one thing:

The leopard was Sellion's wishing star.

With a hopping step, the cheetah came quickly face-to-face with the leopard, ears twitching in all directions as he examined his "star".

"I believe I have." he said huskily, grinning. But his grin faded as confusion took over. "Now how do I make the wishes come true?"

Kutakia blinked as all of a sudden the cheetah was right in his face - right there in front of him. It spooked the leopard, so much he quickly jumped backwards, some hair bristling and standing on end. He managed to compose himself rather quickly, however, watching Sellion warily now. This cheetah...something wasn't right. He was almost beginning to wish he'd never run into him. Amber eyes regarded Sellion carefully, watching closely for the slightest of movements, as his own paws moved slightly in the soil, ready to move at the slightest hint of agitation from the cheetah.

"You found your star?" he asked, a little confused. He managed yet another forced smile, though. It sooned turned to confusion. "But if you found your star, the wishes should've already come true."

Bless his guillible mind.

Eyebrows quirking, tail twitching, Sellion began to circle the leopard, as if sizing him up.

"Why does it no longer glow?" he mumbled to himself, pink eyes shining in the darkness of the shadowy jungle. His claws scratched against the earth noisily with each step, creating a rather eerie sound. But Sellion was fixated on Kuta; hypnotized. His "star" no longer glowed; no longer shown with such a bright, white light. But his "star" still had the power to grant wishes, just like it said to him. Yes, stars could speak. How interesting, interesting...If he could but capture many stars, he could create a wishing army; each star granting him a wish. If he had all the stars in the sky...

BY THE DEMONS OF HELL! All the stars in the sky! Each star a wish! It was too much to take in at once. Yes, he would focus on his one star; for now...

Gathering himself up and coming to a stop in his circling, Sellion met the eyes of the leopard, expression dower. "My wish has not come true." he breathed darkly. "Chana..." he whispered. His eyes became misted and his focus seemed to blur. But he came back to reality quickly. "Chana is not here." And then the cheetah was frustrated. Surely the star had done something wrong. But how was he to get it to do what he wanted?

Sellion bared his fangs.

Glowing? ...Okay, Kutakia was getting a little worried now. Why was Sellion circling him? Whatever had he done wrong? He'd simply greeting the cheetah, then retold a story his mother had once told him. He'd wanted to make Sellion happy, not angry at him! His smile dropped, forming a somewhat disheartened expression as he attempted to keep his gaze fixed on Sellion, cirling around on the spot with the cheetah.

Who was Chana? ...Okay, those were definitely fangs. He was threatening him! Deciding it was time to leave, Kuta watched Sellion carefully in front of him, darting to the left quite suddenly. The thought that instantly came to his head was the Sellion was a cheetah. Cheetahs could run fast - certainly faster than he could run. He was to hide...but where? Taking several large leaps, amber eyes flashed around the immediate area, wideneed in fear. Then, however, he spotted the answer. The trees! Cheetahs couldn't climb trees! One great leap landed Kuta on the tree trunk, sharp claws sinking into the bark as he scrambled up the tree, passing by the first branch and eventually settling down on the second, sinking low in an attempt to hide himself.

Note to self: Pink and black cheetahs = not good.

In the blur of motion created by the scrambling leopard, Sellion merely stood still, watching with his mouth open. Before the cheetah could even blink, Kuta was up in a tree branch. Forgetting all about the wish, Sellion felt a grin tug at his mouth.

Stars had such POWER! If ONLY he could harvest them! Yes, yes...He'd follow every shooting star he saw right to their landing spot. He'd find more. He'd find all of them. All of them would be his; his wishes. And they wouldn't be broken like that one was...But that was something he had to let go. The "star" was beyond his reach now...FAR beyond his reach. It was impossible for Sellion to get to him. And Sellion, though disappointed, was filled with an odd excitement of just watching the "star's" ability to climb trees.

Backing up, Sellion tilted his head, still staring at Kuta. He narrowed his eyes, watching him. Perhaps that power was tiring at he would have to come down soon? Perhaps Sellion should've waited? But that idea was flushed out of the cheetah's mind when he thought of a way to force the "star" to come down from the tree. Maybe...spitting fruit seeds at him?

"Ah!" Sellion exclaimed quietly, startled by his own sheer brilliance. And so he turned and raced into the jungle in search of fruit.

He forgot about what he was doing in approximately three minutes.

Kutakia watched Sellion closely, amber eyes shining out of the darkness up in the tree. He watched closely, hoping the Sellion didn't come up with any idea on how to get him down. What ideas might they be, though? The cheetah suddenly gave a triumphant cry and the leopard tensed, slightly afraid. What had happened? But then the cheetah ran off into the jungle, Kuta slowly watching after him.

It wasn't until a good hour later that Kuta finally allowed himself to climb carefully down out of the tree, just to make sure Sellion wasn't lying in wait. He glanced around, fur still bristling a little, before he slinked off into the vegetation. He certainly didn't want to meet Sellion again.
