Rook sighed a little as he hopped into the shallow end of a local pool. He'd have to as always pass the stupid swim test for today's lifeguard to get access to the deep end. It wasn't fair really considering that he always passed, there should be a special wristband or something he could wear so that he didn't have to keep doing this every time he came.
At least, Rook thought , he was more comfortably now as the warm water splashed over his rubbery grey skin and moistened it again. He waded about letting himself get used to moving in the water again, he hated the resistance it gave when he walked as that mostly disappeared once he was fully submerged, something to do with how his head made the water move funny.

As opposed to the large gray mass that seemed to be having difficulty, Vox sped easily through the water as if there was nothing to it at all. It was like he was one with the liquid, a being made for just being in it and nothing else, and he kicked his small legs as he let himself drift along.
He would never have noticed this strange creature if it wasn't for how they moved along, piquing Vox's childish interest, and he quickly peddled his way over.
It should be known that Vox had always shown a strong sign for swimming, even though he was so small, and Rit never had to worry when he was in the water. When she had first seen him taking the the family tub on his own and seemingly not drowning, she figured it would all be okay.
That, and the baby was a Kelpie. Those things were water.
So it was that Vox came to a standstill beneath where Rook was trying to swim, and he peered up at the older boy from under the water, his eyes eerie and his image so heavily distorted.

Rook looked down at the water directly in front his feet and frowned, it wasn't fair, he was practically two big to swim properly underwater in the shallow end anymore and here was this other person making it so he couldn't walk over to the life guard and take the test he needed to.
A little annoyed but curious about what the person in his way looked like, Rook Dropped down to on his belly to the pool floor to stare at the stranger. The boy couldn't breath underwater but he could hold his breath for an abnormal amount of time. His mother had said that whatever it was he was was probably amphibious meaning it was at home on land and in water but still needed to breath air.

As this larger creature moved under Vox back up a little bit, the water moving around him with merely the motion. No bubbles poured from his mouth to nose to indicate he was exhaling, and he merely blinked as he watched the other person move around.
They didn't seem to be having trouble, but they looked a little...ridiculous. To Vox anyway, but then again. . .
" . . . "
The little child moved so he was rising above the surface now, his head poking out slowly as if he were emerging like some actor in a movie instead of a child in a pool. The overall effect was cool, as he only allowed his eyes and nose to surface, and he merely looked down to see if the other would follow suit.,
It was a fun game.

Rook now stared up at the strange boy who'd been in his way earlier and shook his head before circling him, moving much easier under water with his head and crown well shaped to part the water for him and tail acting as a rudder. This strange one, this other child who was at home in the water had brought him down here and Rook had no intention of surfacing just yet. Follow the leader could wait a few moments longer

Vox seemed a little perplexed as the other simply stayed under water, not even surfacing for air, and he blinked for a moment before he ducked himself back under too and slowly swam to his side. His movements were far less animalistic, having no need of a rudder, and in the cool blue of the pool's light reflections, Vox noticed the other's skin looked rather hard.
Probably very unappealing too, but it wouldn't matter if he was dead or not. When something was dead that meant he had a lot of time with whatever it was to do as he pleased, which meant break through tough skin or store meat, and the small child grinned widely as an idea came across.
If we're going to play follow, I will follow until it is my turn to lead.
His thoughts rolled in his head as he moved about, so glad to be back in the water for the time being, that he didn't even think that it would be odd to someone else to see a person with their mouth open beneath the surface. Instead he merely swam in front of the older child's path, blocking him off.
When it is my turn to lead, I will drown him.

Rook would have laughed if he hadn't been underwater, as it was all he did was smile when the other child got in his way again. The water was too shallow for him to be really agile in and thus go over or under the other boy but he had more than one trick up his sleeve. Rook swerved left and raced for the far wall. if he could get ahead of the other than he could cut across his barrier and get a little closer to his ultimate goal which was the deep end.

Piece of cake. Vox moved so he could rebound from the wall, his movements rather swift but not as quick as this other child's. For as much as Vox could swim he was still much smaller and therefore his strokes didn't take him nearly the distance that one of the older child's did, but it worked well enough. His small size enabled him to move through the water at sharper angles without much fear.
He was able then to move ahead, though one thought popped into his mind. How much longer could this other child stay under without breathing? Vox was capable of never needing, but this . . .
Surface soon.

Rook couldn't hear the other's thoughts but he did need to breathe soon and placed his legs back under himself so he could stand. He looked curiously down at the boy who's name he still didn't know as he took a few settling breathes and then a deep one before submerging himself a again and signaling to his companion that it was his turn to be chased.

Okay, so he does need to breathe.
Vox was a little more assured now that he'd seen the other child go up for air while he himself never had to even think about it, and when it became clear it was now his turn to lead he quickly moved and sped towards the bottom of the deep end.
He could ignore the lifeguards that were probably going to be watching him with a weary eye as he did so, wondering how a child so small had gotten down there, but he didn't care. He was going to make this a little contest, to see who could stay down there longer.
Come on, follow. Follow!

Having satisfied his need for air Rook followed the nameless boy though he was a bit nervous now. You weren't supposed to go into the deep end without passing the life guard's test first. A small pit of guilt formed in Rook's stomach as he swam under the floating divider of the pool. he might have thought the test was silly becuase he always passed but still, he wasn't the sort of child who normally broke rules.
Even if they were headed for the bottom Rook felt comfortable for the moment because there was just so much more room to move in the deep ends, more directions he could go before hitting the surface and less swimmers in general.

Vox continued to swim deeper down, the water's depth and pressure change doing nothing to his ears, and as he reached the portion where the pool sloped down drastically he moved and laid on his back. He had to wiggle his arms a little to prevent himself from floating up, but it did allow him to look at the larger child, whom he had come to accept as a decent swimmer, but a person with a poor choice in swimming clothing.
He looks almost too big for me to drown as I am now. Probably too tough to bite too.
Vox continued to look up from where he lay, uncaring that the chlorine would probably sting his eyes badly tomorrow.

Rook followed happily after the other boy, keeping his distance for now, wanting to give him a good chase in a moment. As always the boy was careful when kicking his legs to avoid letting the small hand span of chain on his left ankle hit either foot and distract him. Even though he wasn't sure why Rook was having fun and the joy at being able to swim and play with another underwater battled the guilt he still felt.
Once the other was laying on the floor of the pool Rook darted towards him intending to use his larger and longer limbs to his advantage in this little game of underwater tag. the other was certainly a good swimmer, Rook though, but the water was deeper here and Rook thought that was at least in his favour.

Doesn't that chain weigh him down? He's stronger then I thought.
More and more thoughts of how Vox would be unable to overpower this larger boy (in his current state anyway) came to mind as the small toddler watched him move around and carry his extra burdens. Granted water pretty much everything weightless if need be, but chain was still chain and naturally would drag things down.
He was slowly changing his mind. Slowly.
Don't think you can catch me, foolish creature.
From where he'd been laying on the pool bottom on his back he quickly pushed off and shot like a little dart under the water, his arms and legs moving in sync with one another to pedal him completely under the massive boy in one motion, and he looked back with his large black eyes as he grinned widely.
No one could catch him.

Rook had never thought something so small could move so fast, he had to admit he'd underestimated the other child. Ever being older wasn't helping Rook when the other proved to be able to turn much swifter and shoot back under him the other way. Turning himself though slower and less eloquently he pursued his quarry hoping the boy wasn't going to keep making sharp turns like that. His tail allowed him some good turn ratios underwater, better than the average swimmer but not nearly as good as this kid.
