Sacred Animals
Each dragon clan protects a sacred animal that lives in their realm. The dragons revere these creatures and consider them the source of dragon power. They often seek to appease these divine creatures. The leader of each clan is able to communicate with the sacred animals telepathically. These animals also choose a successor whenever a clan leader dies, retires, or if they just don't like the one present.
Sacred animals are NPCs but they are not pets, personal companions, or mates of dragons (should go without saying, but I thought I'd just be sure). They remain in their respective locations and never accompany dragons on outtings or quests. Changes in leadership should be run by the manager (me) first, however, so that we don't have multiple dragons in a clan claiming to hear the sacred animals.
