I'm just wondering, for all of you out there with your wonderfully stretched lobes, how do you go about using tape to stretch? I know that you wrap the tape around your plugs and increase the size incrementally, but I've got some questions...

How early can you start putting tape on after your most recent stretch?

How often would you suggest adding more tape? and how much?

How do you know when you've gone up to the next gauge size?

I'm going to use tape to get from 0g to 00g b/c the jump is so large, so any help would be appreciated! smile

If you're using PTFE then one layer a day works. Or a couple wraps once a week. It's a bit faster than going a whole gauge up once a month, and easier on your ears I think.
You can use a caliper on the taped earring to see what size it's at.
And if it hurts, wait awhile before putting more tape on. =3

PTFE tape is suuuuper thin so one layer a day might seem slow, but it does add up and it feels like less waiting than once a month. lol

How early can you start putting tape on after your most recent stretch?

It really depends on what size you stretched to. Typically, the larger the size gauge, the longer you should wait for it to heal.
I see you're going from 0g - 00g. Since you're not at the point where you're keeping track of your jewelry size by the fractions {haha}, and it's been so long ago since I was at 0g or 00g, it's hard for me to give an estimate on healing time. My guess is anywhere from 2-3 weeks or so. Keep checking on it as time passes, and listen to your body before stretching.

I started using the tape method when I reached 1/2" {my goal was 1" so you can imagine it was a ways to go, haha}. Often times I would just use an educated guess when adding layers of tape. Usually I'd try adding two, try putting it in, and if I thought I might be able to get away with an extra layer, I'd do it, if not, didn't.
When you're just adding a layer or two of tape to your jewelry, it's not exactly the same as stretching to the next size up in one step, so the waiting period shouldn't have to be as long. I would say a safe estimated guess is one - two weeks at most. Everyone's body is different, so the most important thing is to keep checking it out to see how it's healing and listen to your body before you tape some more.

You could always do the 'guess and check' method and after you're holes have healed with the tape, remove the jewelry and try inserting the jewelry that is the next gauge size. Another method is simply comparing the sizes of the jewelry you've taped and the jewelry of the gauge you're stretching to. Hold them up together, and if they look like they're the same size, try putting the new jewelry in and see if it fits.

I personally didn't have problems with that stretch, but everyone's different. Have you thought about using a taper instead? It might be easier in the long run. But do what you feel comfortable with. razz
When I used the taping method, I did some research online and found a reputable website that told me that electrical tape was a decent tape to use for taping while stretching, so that's what I used. Since then {and it was a long time ago}, I've read from other people online that electrical tape isn't a good material for various reasons and some people really advise against using it. I've heard and read some online testimonials that bondage tape works really well, so if you can get a hold of that, maybe try that. If not, I hear Teflon and PTFE work well too.

Last but not least, I recently created an official stretched piercing topic here in the guild, so if you're interested, check it out:

Yeah, sometimes jewelry can look bigger than it really is. Or worse case scenario, maybe you purchased the wrong size by accident?
This gauge chart is extremely helpful in finding out if you're jewelry is the right size if you don't actually own a gauge wheel. You can hold your jewelry up to the different gauges on the gauge chart to see if your jewelry matches up and is the correct size.

Hope that helps. Good luck~

I started taping at 1/2" as well. It took about a week to get to 5/8, and it was pretty painless. After taping my ears, I began really going against using tapers to stretch until you get to an appropriate size to use tape. It's a lot less stressful on your ears.

But yeah, Zombina pretty much covered it all, just giving my personal experience.

I used tape on my ears too. It took a long time. I went really slow. I remember taping until I was a little bigger than my new jewellry so I wouldn't have any problem sliding the new one through. I used a little water based lube too. It helped. Good luck!
