It was funny how sometime interests snuck up on you. Cooking had done that to Sophia. It had crept up quietly, wearing the guise of a chore, and soon she was loving it more and more. Whether it was cooking up pasta for dinner or baking something sweet for desert, she was becoming extremely comfortable in the kitchen.

One day Rye had suggested, in the off handed way she often did with her whimsical ideas, that Sophia host a bake sale. Sophia, of course, had been confused as to why; what did she need money for? Rye had only replied that she could always pick a cause and raise money to donate to it. It was having fun with the bake sale that counted, at least in her mind. So Sophia had eventually decided to hold a sale to raise money for children's hospitals.

The baking, even if large quantities, had been the easy part. It was the selling that she found out to be more difficult. She had managed to get permission to sell the goods in front of a super market. Trafic flow of customers wasn't too bad. No, it was the cold that got her.

By luck she had managed to put the sale on one of the coldest days so far. Mittens, gloves, a hat, a scarf...even with it all she was chilled. The hand warmers she had were running out too. But she had to stay all afternoon. She had been outside for two hours when she began to wonder when her body would go numb already. Still hours to go...and lots to sell!

Melchizedek was doing chores. And not easy chores like cleaning or fixing things. No. He was doing women's work. Granted, since his idea of a woman revolved mostly around Katrina, Melchy could more or less understand why he would be doing the women's work. Cap'n was not the kind of person to do mundane tasks when she could force an underling to do it for her. And today, Melchy had been that underling. So he was on his way to the grocery store, with a list, some money, and a bad attitude. It was bleedin' cold out. Though he was bundled up for him (a coat, light flannel scarf, and gloves was the most Katrina could get him to put on), the cold still bit through everything, and his nose was cold. Growling to himself, he stomped around the corner to the grocery and stopped dead.

There was stuff. Good stuff. Like.........baked stuff. Which was certainly not on the list and definitely not accounted for in the money Katrina gave him. Sidling closer, Melchy inspected the table. Yeah, it was a bake sale. He'd run into them every now and again. Usually bunch of girl scouts raising money for whatever. He didn't even know. But the important thing was, not everyone was watching the goods all the time. And Melchy..well...this was a great thing for him. Grinning, he sidled closer, keeping an eye on the girl who seemed to be running the thing.

When you only had two full tables to watch it was easy to keep an eye on potential customers. Considering that most of said potential customers were flat out humans it was easy to spot Melchizedek when he came near. His ears were absolutely adorable, she had to admit. Whether or not he had any money...well...that was different. Kids rarely bought anything and if they did it was by making Mommy or Daddy do it.

"Can I help you?" Sophie piped in his direction, making an effort to meet his gaze rather then give his ears pleasantly curiousg glances. She had to be polite after all.

Aw, damn. He knew she was loooking at him, and that was not exactly the way he had intended to start out when it came to nicking sweets off of tables. Fighting to keep the scowl off his face, he flashed Sophia a brilliant grin when she spoke, surveying a plate of cookies with a slightly speculative lift of one eyebrow. Giving a quick, short bow, he considered his manner of addressing the girl. "Ah, not sure," he said earnestly. "Prolly not, at the mo'," he admitted after a second of thought. "Y'raisin' money for somethin', or jus' makin' some cash on the side?" he asked conversationally, looking back to Sophia after a moment. Keep her talking and sneak a handful of something while she was distracted. That's what he'd do.

"Well, to be honest I just wanted an excuse to bake things," Sophia admitted bashfully, "But...all the money is going to children's hospitals."

She lifted her gloved fingers briefly to her mouth, blowing on them and letting the warm breath settle on the fabric. Trying to ignore the cold, she commented towards his glance at one of the cookie plates, "Those are...oatmeal cookies. There are regular ones, chocolate chip ones, and ones with rasins." She didn't even like oatmeal and she liked them. They tasted just as good as regular cookies made with simplier dough, but they were better for you. "But there are lots of other kinds if you like."

"Huh," Melchy said, not really meaning anything by it. If it was for charity, he probably shouldn't try to nick anything, but....well......it looked kind of amazing. And then she started describing the cookies and he almost growled his annoyance at Katrina for not sending him with anything. Dammit, he was hungry and there were baked goods! "You made all of this?" he asked, when he realized that the way Sophia was talking, she was the only person running the sale or doing any of the work. That was surprising. Looked like a heck of a lot of cookies for one person. "S'a lot of baking," he remarked thoughtfully.
