Shy and reserved was not in the nature of the small dark hare, though it seemed to be quite common in her family- both nuclear and extended-lion families. Cheshi and Mizi, her mother and sister, were among the worst and they had proven not to be completely helpless about all of it. Memetuka was a whole other story, but her situation was so complicated and she wasn't isolated from her family so she was excused. Someone who would not be excused, though, was Kafara. She was not old with a family, she was not trying to be more social, she mostly stayed back when in a group, even around her whole family, and stuck with her mother as much as possible. She was already a lot larger than the hare, but Mnyama was not intimidated.

Standing on her toes, trying to be nose to nose with the little lioness (which was impossible, but she tried), she frowned. She had spent the better part of the last hour trying to talk to Kafara, convince her, and it wasn't working.

"Come on, it's not that hard," she was saying.

Kafara was doing her best not to cower away from the hare. Mnyama had such a strong personality, especially in comparison to the cub. She had no idea of how ridiculous it would have looked for her to be cowering back from the hare, what she did know is that if she cowered again then Mnyama would yell more. Kafara did not want that.

"It's not that easy, either!" she argued, a very distinct whine in her voice, "Why can't you just leave me alone?" The question was much braver than she had been the whole time. She usually did not dare to yell or tell someone to go away or leave her alone, but she was tired of Mnyama poking at her for not wanting to walk up to random strangers. She didn't understand how a hare, something so small and often tasty.. how a hare could be so bold. Or stupid, depending on the circumstances.

Mnyama wrinkled her nose and stuck her tongue out of Kafara, coming up with a new plan now that the cub was showing some fight. She was almost arguing, she was getting frustrated. Provoking her might not get her to be more social but it certainly might get her to liven up a bit, to stand up for herself if nothing else. That would be enough to placate the rambunctious hare.

"Pfft," she muttered, hopping back and looking at Kafara with a daring grin, "Make me!"

Kafara did cower when challenged. She didn't actually want to cause any trouble, she knew she could hurt the hares if she tried, sometimes even if she didn't- she learned that quickly even when she was small.

"Mnyama!" she whined again, standing up and hesitating as she tried to decide between stepping closer and stepping back. "You should just be nice!"

Angavu had a lot on her mind. A lot. Mentally, she was cursing herself for being so foolish, so hypocritical. Outwardly, though, she was only quiet, thoughtful and a bit grumpy looking. Anyone would know she was not in a good mood, but she was a lot like Mnyama and had never really hid her emotions so, fortunately, no one had bothered her yet. Her little encounter with the thirsty rogue had been interesting, to say the least. She had been charmed by his voice, his kindness and the fact that he was not from the pride. And now, well now.. she was almost certain there were going to be consequences of that. She thought about consulting her parents, but decided against that. She thought about confiding in her brothers, but they were needlessly protective sometimes among other personality flaws (in Angavu's opinion at least)! She laughed at the idea of talking to Abedari, she still hadn't had a proper conversation with him. No, she decided to go and talk to her grandmother first. Shiri had always had Kei around, even though when Anga herself was young it had not been so constant as now. Meme had two litters, abandoned the first and the second definitely had certain stigma attached. She had help but for the most part she was not with consistent and reliable help. For that reason, Angavu identified most with her and thought perhaps she would be the most sympathetic.

On her way to the den, though, she came across a rather unusual sight. Her young aunt and her small friend, but they did not look like they were having a friendly chat. They looked almost like they were arguing. The frightened look on Kafara was unmistakable.

"Come on, Kafara," she called, jogging up to the pair of them, "You can take her."

The hare crossed her arms awkwardly when Kafara chose to cower and whine at her. They were going backwards now! Before she could comment, though, a golden lioness appeared in her peripheral vision. If it was Memetuka, the jig was up. If it was Angavu, though, she might have a chance. She didn't want to look, though, because that would mean breaking eye contact with her 'victim'.

She was relieved when she heard Angavu's voice, though she had guessed who it was by the size and way she walked. Memetuka was bigger than she'd been as a rogue but she still looked thinner than many pride lions.

"Don't you start, Anga!" she warned, still keeping her pink eyes on Kafara. Perhaps it would help to argue with Anga, to show they could be relatively mean to each other in jest and still be friends.

Kafara flinched when Angavu suddenly showed up, not hesitating to turn and look when she came into view. She was not nearly as concerned about eye contact with Mnyama, she was actually rather happy to look away. It surprised her, though, when Anga appeared to be on her side. Angavu was never on her side, not in things like this. She wasn't sure if she was serious about it, though.

"I- I don't want to take her," she argued, shaking her head and stepping back. She didn't know what Anga meant by take but it wasn't anything good in this conversation so far as Kafara could figure.

Angavu grinned at Mnyama and then at Kafara. She had done enough thinking and she quickly decided the best way to approach her situation was to try a bit harder with the younger lions in her family, and that included Kafara. Besides, this was often how her relationship with Mnyama went. They argued more than they agreed, but it was always for fun and never anything serious.

"Sometimes you have to," she reasoned, stepping around Kafara and shoving at Mnyama with a large paw, "if you want her to be nice."
PostPosted: Fri Jan 23, 2009 4:13 pm

"Hey!" Mnyama squeaked defiantly when she was shoved, hop-stumbling back and kicking at the paw that was stuck out towards her. "I may be smaller than you guys but I'm smarter. You should listen more!" She hopped closer to Kafara again, but making sure to keep a distance from Angavu. She knew she would have Angavu on her side, but she wasn't sure if she would have to convince her. The way she was acting, she just might want the full explanation- a good way to make Kafara listen. Mnyama could not have planned this any better.

Kafara fell silent, her shoulders drawn up as she watched Angavu push the hare. She couldn't imagine purposefully pushing them around, they were not prey, they were pretty much family. It would be mean and wrong to take advantage of the size difference to make them do what you wanted them to do. Not to mention her opinions were being overshadowed by the conversation and opinions of the other two.

"Smarter!" she said with a laugh, "Hear that Kafara?" Angavu did know enough about Kafara and about Mnyama to know that she was approaching this the right way. Mnyama would be more serious if she was being completely sincere about what she was saying. No, she was still trying at the same point she was trying at before Anga showed up.

"I can't imagine," she said, taking a seat- and shifting uncomfortably when she realized she was in fact becoming a bit larger in the middle- which made sitting a bit different, "What's going on?"

"I am so smarter," Mnyama argued calmly, glaring up at the larger lioness as she made herself comfortable. Her eyes went back and forth between the two lions, noting how different their fur was but how very similar they seemed despite that. She grinned, patting at Kafara when asked what was going on.

"I was just telling Kafara how she has be more outgoing," she said, "You know, she almost never leaves the den. I was lucky to get her this far away without Meme or Kutunza coming along."

Kafara made a face, her ears flattened against her head. She didn't want to argue about it, she could only hope that Angavu would side with her. She wrinkled her nose and looked by her side where Mnyama was tapping at her, then she leaned away.

"I don't have to," she said, a hint of sadness in her voice as she felt more and more that she was losing the argument, "I'm OK how I am, mama says.."

Unusually self-conscious and surprisingly uncomfortable, Angavu shifted her weight again, her tail curling and uncurling around her. She listened, though, to what they said, smiling at the faces the pair of them made.

"I'm sure she does," she said, "And you are, but I bet you'd be happier having more friends than just your brother." Besides, having so few outside friends was probably related to how easily Anga had been intrigued (and charmed) by the passing rogue. It wasn't a bad thing, necessarily but.. still! Kafara would be happier, she imagined.

"Brothers are fine and dandy," Mnyama continued from Angavu's statement, though she was watching the unusual shifting around that the lioness was doing, "But come on, who really wants to hang around with them all the time? Outsiders are much more interesting than them." The hare meant those outside the family, of course, but pretty much anybody her size was an outsider of the pride. Lions did not all keep prey beasts around.

"Kutunza is interesting!" she argued more boldly, defending her brother with much more sincerity than anything she had argued about or defended when only it was about herself. Kafara still visibly drooped, though. She did like the idea of friends, on the one paw- but that meant going out more, going farther, on her own. Mostly.

At the word 'outsiders', Angavu shifted this time out of self-consciousness. She was behaving very oddly, and she knew she was. It was unfortunate she was around Mnyama, the hare who knew her best. She had to just hope she didn't notice.

"Certainly," she said, agreeing with Kafara, "We never said he wasn't interesting. You can't know he's not less interesting than others if you never talk to them, Kafara."
PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2009 10:18 pm

Mnyama was now thoroughly distracted from the argument with Kafara. Like Angavu, she was not afraid to say what she thought and the strange change in behavior merited immediate questioning rather than any sort of delay. The hare hopped away from Kafara and towards Angavu, her pink eyes narrowed.

"Ok, what is wrong with you?" she asked, tapping a long foot on the ground, "You're jumpy and- and- weird! What is going on?"

Kafara was frowning until Mnyama suddenly hopped away from her. Her green eyes followed the hare to in front of Angavu, at which point she looked up at her older niece with confusion when the hare demanded to know what was wrong. She hadn't noticed anything different about her, not really.. except that she was being unusually nice by agreeing with her. At least to start. And she was being quite nice about the argument.

"Y-yeah!" Kafara said, trying to help the subject change but also wondering herself, "You're being really nice, too.."

Angavu stared back at the hare, then looked offended when Kafara said she was being nice like it was an uncommon occurrence. Truthfully, she knew she was being exceptionally kind to the youth- but she had a reason. It was the same reason she was so antsy, so jumpy as Mnyama had put it.

"I'm always nice," she argued, but quickly lost her resolve. It was going to come out anyway, and Mnyama was not a bad one to start by telling. And Kafara was a small lioness, she might be interested in cubs.

"Fine," she said, "Kafara, you have to be a little more social. I might need your help keeping my cubs entertained."
PostPosted: Sat Jan 24, 2009 10:35 pm

Mnyama made a slight face when Kafara spoke, though she recognized before Anga did that it would be counter-productive to make her feel bad for speaking her mind. She wasn't actually wrong, either. Angavu was being kind to take her side, and even in arguing with her she was still being nice and making suggestions instead of demands.

When Anga spoke up, her immediate reaction was to be upset that she addressed Kafara and not the small hare- until she realized what she said. Then she looked skeptical, until she looked the lioness up and down. She looked very serious about it, plus it would explain the shiftiness and random kindness towards the cub. However, she still only had one thing to say.

"What?"

Kafara cowered from her niece at the reprimand of sorts, until she said something very strange. She had cubs? Or was she having cubs? She.. but..

Confused, Kafara blinked a couple times as she processed the information. As a youth herself, and one that spent a lot of time with her mother, she was quite curious about cubs. The only problem was that she was shy of anyone outside of the family and everybody in her family was pretty much her age. Cubs could be fun. Kafara knew Angavu, knew her personality, but in her mind there was no reason that she was unlikely to have cubs.

"Cubs?" she asked.

Mnyama's expression about summed up the reaction Angavu was expecting from her family when they inevitably found out. She didn't doubt that it would come as a surprise that she had gotten herself pregnant, especially by a complete stranger that she'd had no idea how to find let alone intended to keep around. She had been very upset with her grandmother for similar circumstances. She would have bet her brothers would find mates before she ever found anybody, and it had always been her intention to find somebody before this. But plans did not always work.

"I'm almost certain I am expecting cubs," she said firmly, standing up and glancing down at the slight bump to her belly, "It would certainly not be a surprise, foolish as I was. Don't you think it's starting to show?"

She smirked at them, wondering how they would answer.
