I have a soft spot in my heart for Nickelback. They, along with Linkin Park, got me into rock. Finally I found a genre of music that speaks to me and makes me happy rather than irritated. While, since the beginning, the band has suffered from being called 'posers' for their often generic lyric content and radio-friendly style, half of the criticism is clique-y uber-goths trying to find a scapegoat to punch at. And unfortunately Nickelback got a big target painted on their backs.
I admit it, they have a point. This album's content of sex, drugs, booze and 'living each day as your last' does stink of cliche. But then again, those themes are used for a reason.
But Nickelback are here to entertain. I found that out when I (finally!) got to go see them live. The band had a laugh, but 120% into the show, and Chad was the perfect showman, always speaking to the audience, laughing and getting them revved up.
So what if the music's radio friendly? Songs are meant to be sung along to, and gosh-darnit, this album is 100% sing-a-long-able.
Stomping anthemic songs that'll have you chanting the lyrics while air guitaring, and softer soppy songs that are all gooey and inspirational.
Yes, it's pop-rock,a nd Niceklback have definately gotten more pop-friendly, while retaining a country grit/character.
It'll especially appeal to fans of country music, because it has that overblown atmosphere.
Yes, certain songs' content are cringeworthy cheesy (eg 'next go round' is about how long and how many different ways a couple can energetically have sex), but after a listen you'll soonnot care XD
It's a little piece of upbeat drama you'll not be able to get out of your head.
Its hard to say which of Nickelback's albums are the best, since all have different features. But for pure coming together of music into a throughly enjoyable sound, this is certainly their best yet.
If you've never bought a Nickelback album, buy this.
If you're already a fan, then you've shrugged off the posers who despise bands like Nickelback, and you'll already own this album. Good for you wink
