She didn't want to be in the house, but she didn't want to be far from it either. Nowhere she went felt really safe and Kaimi found herself jumping at the smallest noises. She found herself eager to go to school for the first time in her life, simply so she could be around other people and not have to be alone. Added to this all the new, strange hormones that came with being a teenager AND the fact that it was winter and cold outside, and Kaimi was one distracted and broody little camper. She'd made her way to the park, bundled up in a coat and wearing Delilah's scarf, half hoping to run into the other girl so she could give it back and have some company.
And now she sat on one of the swings, swaying half-heartedly back and forth and watching kids play out of the corner of her eye. Her mind was turned inward, though. Trying to push back memories she wished she didn't have.

Going on the slide one last time before deciding the metal was too cold to sit on, Joshua looked around the play ground for any potentional friends. There was a girl with pretty hair sitting on the swings by herself. Wasn't she lonely? Josh knew he was, even if his mother was only on the otherside of the park, keeping watch.
He decided to go up to her. "Hi!" He said smiling; maybe she would make a good friend? He hoped so. "My name's Josh. What's your name? I like your hair!" He added. Why wasn't she cheerful looking? She looked down, maybe she needed cheering up. The toddler liked cheering people up; it was something he was good at. He sat on the swing next to her. "Wanna be friends?"

The bright sound of a cheery voice pulled Kaimi out of her funk enough to look around and see the little boy on the swing next to her. He was so bright and open, just like she had used to be (she thought to herself melodramatically).
Despite what she'd been through recently, extended periods of depression just werent in her and it appeared that what she really needed was a happy person to say happy things to her. She smiled slowly at the little boy. It was a tired smile, but a genuine one. "Sure. I'd love to be your friend." He was adorable. Her sister had never been so cute. "My name is Kaimi, whats yours?"

"Josh," The toddler told her happily. He was glad to see a smile. "Kaimi is a pretty name." He added, before looking around. He still wondered why she was by herself. Maybe she needed someone to play with! "Why you all alone? Are you sad? Lonely? Wanna play a game?" He could have bombarded her with questions, but he wanted to keep her smiling. "I teach you a game, and you play, kay?"
He was a pretty good teacher when it came to games. Maybe Kaimi would teach him a new one, so he could teach Zemel!

Her responses were still a bit sluggish, but she nodded in agreement, ignoring his first questions and skipping straight to the last one. Maybe playing a little bit with him would help. She wasn't so deeply into being a teenager that she couldn't still play simple games. Though right now that seemed a long, long way away. "Sure. What game would you like to play?"

For less than a nanosecond, a frown appeared on Joshua's face. Then, he smiled. "You pick. Play pretend or Simon Says or maybe you pick a new game." He told her. He didn't know what game she'd like best; and he wanted her to have fun too.
Anyway, girls should pick the games. Right?

"Hmmm..." She thought for a moment. She wasn't sure that she felt up to playing pretend at the moment. But Simon Says was better with more than two people. "How about... hide-and-seek? You can pick if you want to hide or seek first." She added generously.

Joshua smiled at the suggestion of a new game. "Hide n seek sounds fun!" He said. "Maybe I hide first, and you seek?" He suggested. He didn't really want her to hide-- what if she got lonely? He couldn't allow that!
"You count to ten, and then come look, kay?" He waited for her to close her eyes, then he would hide.

"Okay." Kaimi smiled and covered her eyes with both hands. "One.... Two...." She began counting, deliberately slowly, a little smile coming to her face.

Josh ran to hide behind the brightly colored slide. He stood, sitting wasn't a good idea when the woodchips were so cold-- not to mention wet! He waited silently for Kaimi to start looking.
This would be fun!

"Eight... nine... ten!" Kaimi uncovered her eyes and looked around, sliding off the swing. "Hmmm..." She said, wandering around the playground with innate grace. She checked behind a couple of trees before catching the flash of his jacket by the slide. "I found you!" She said, peeking behind the slide at him.

Joshua jumped when she found him, and giggled. "You hide next!" He said. He put his hands over his eyes and started to count. He'd only just learned how from Uncle Vate. "One... Five.. Three.." He started. "Are you hiding yet?"

The benefits of being small were obvious when it came to hiding. She slipped behind a tree whose trunk was more than big enough to conceal her. "Yes! I'm hiding!" She called back, finding a genuine giggle somewhere inside her. It felt good to pretend to be little again.

Well, if she was hiding, he didn't need to finish counting! Joshua uncovered his eyes, and started looking. He looked everywhere-- behind the slide, inside the tunnel, over by the swings.
Where was Kaimi? He wandered around, before catching sight of her. "Hi!" He said, from behind her.

Kaimi jumped in mock-suprise. "You found me! I thought my hiding spot was so good, too." She smiled down at the little boy. Would you like to try another game?
