Ophelia pinned her hair back with a pair of miniature crab clips and took the paint brush from between her teeth. She was hungry, but lunch would have to wait - her apprentice level exams were in less than two weeks, and she felt woefully underprepared, having had under a year to learn what most students took five years to practice. She pursed her lips and dipped her brush into a cup of blue paint. The plastic strands of beads around her wrists clicked together as she raised her hand to the easel.
Her stomach growled. Ophelia looked balefully over her shoulder at the brown paper bag on the desk behind her, and then back to the canvas. She bit her lip, and then continued painting. PB&J came second to studying.

Manuela sighed as she made her way down the art hall, cane clicking against the tile with each step. Before she had never really been creative outside of her fashion, but recently she had started sketching the outfits that had frequented her thoughts. She probably needed an art credit, so she had taken a basic drawing class. It was going fine, except that she had entered so late that she had a lot of catching up to do. So here she was, wasting her days away in after hours studio. She was a little startled to find someone already in the room, and paused in the doorway to keep from startling her. Waiting a short while for a pause in the work she called out, "Do you mind if I join you?"

Her concentration broken, Ophelia turned around to look at the girl in the doorway. "It's open studio time," she shrugged. "Come on in!"
She smiled briefly and looked back to her canvas. Who was that girl? She'd seen her in some of her classes, but only recently, and hadn't gotten a chance to even find out her name.
"I'm Ophelia," she added, looking around her easel at the new addition to the studio.

"Manny," she offered, finding a table a height enough to sit without bending her leg. She spread out a collection of papers, most doodled in charcoal and colored pencil. None were particularly good, but most were unfinished. As she wandered around the room in search of supplies she looked over her shoulder a few times, noticing the canvas. "I never got the hang of painting," she said with a faint smile, "Are you working on something specific or just...?" She wasn't really that curious, but sitting in a room in silence was decidedly awkward.

"I'm not really sure," replied Ophelia, frowning at the canvas. "I have an exam on this kinda stuff really soon."
To be perfectly honest, she wasn't sure what she was painting. She was going to try an emotion/appearance painting, and then figure out the name later. Apparently the proctors would ask about stuff like that.
"Do you need any help finding anything?" she asked. It was in her nature to try to be helpful.

"Hm? Oh, yeah," She looked sheepishly at the cabinet, noticing that everything kind of blended together. Should have paid more attention while they were explaining that one. She glanced back at the table, taking stock of what she wanted to work on today. "I need the watercolour pencils and the smudgie... Thing," she admitted, feeling a little embarrassed that the couldn't remember what it was called. Letting out a sigh she poked around in the cabinet with the end of her cane, "I'm so far behind."

"Behind in art?" asked Ophelia, going to a different cabinet and rummaging around for a bit. "I don't think that's really possible," she continued, pulling a few cases of art supplies out of the cabinet. She crossed the room and held them out for Manny to take. "I mean, it's a lot of independent study, isn't it?"
She took the opportunity to actually look at the other girl for more than a few seconds. "I like your shirt," she observed.

Manny glanced down at her day's fashion statement, a pinstriped button down with several pounds of black and dark silver jewelry. She cracked a smile, rolling up the sleeves, "It's a bit bland but it serves a purpose." She was a little offended at the comment that no one could be behind in art. She was after all, so there was at least one person. "I was in the hospital for a while, so I've got to do the year's projects in a couple months," she explained, hoping that didn't sound stupid.

"Oh," nodded Ophelia, but decided it would be rude to ask more about why the other girl had been in the hospital. She looked down at the pencils in her hands. "So, you're working on a drawing project?" she asked, waiting for Manny to take the supplies from her. "That's cool. Do you like art?"

Manny moved her cane into her other hand and reached for the supplies, managing a thankful smile. "Fashion design," she explained. Did she like it? That was the big question lately wasn't it? "I'm not really sure," she answered truthfully, setting the supplies down on the table before she began the lengthy process of situating herself on one of the stools, "I like getting my ideas out there but I'm not very good at it."

"Fashion design?" repeated Ophelia. She followed Manny over to the table and surveyed the sketches the girl had left there. "Oh, that's really cool!" she said. "So you like fashion?" she asked, despite feeling like it was sort of obvious. "Me too."
She motioned to the sketches.
"These are really good," she said, and pointing to one in particular, "I like this dress. It's really neat and original."

Manny blushed, reaching for the sketch, "Really? I think I put the collar too high on that one, it seems like it would chafe." It was always nice to find someone that appreciated high fashion, there weren't many around here. "It's one of the only things I'm good at," she laughed, "Colors and textures and patterns, they all just kind of work for me." Math, English, heck any school subject, not so much. "Do you do any designs?" she asked curiously, thinking that she would have some interesting ideas of her own.

"Not on paper," sighed Ophelia, a bit wistfully. "I like playing with stuff I find, though," she added, "I just haven't had time since I grew to work on anything other than paintings."
Which, technically, she should be working on now. But since she wasn't, she had might as well eat while she was slacking off. She retrieved her lunch from another table and perched on a stool next to Manny. She took out her sandwich and offered a half to the other girl, thinking it rude to eat without seeing if her new friend was hungry first.
"Do you want some?" she asked. "Plain and boring PB&J."

"No thanks, I had something on my way over," she said politely, remembering that her mother still had a bit of an issue with her accepting food from people, "You should try it again, I think you'd be really good." Her painting was certainly something, "You'd have an eye for fabrics I think."

"Really?" asked Ophelia, taking a bite out of her sandwich. She smiled as she chewed. Swallowing, she continued, "Maybe I'll give it another try once exams are over."
She gestured to the canvas. "I've got a really important test in a week and a half, though," she said. "So I guess I'm going to eat really quick and then get back to work."
