It wasn't something he was interested in. Mom had prevented Father in teaching them how to fly during their foalhood, she had been worried about them hurting themselves while trying to learn. Funny enough, Canon had hurt himself numerous times by just playing on the ground but he guessed that her worries came more from the fact that 'what if they started to fly and something occurred, what would happen should they fall to the ground?' Canon wasn't completely sure if that was her reasoning behind her reluctance to allow Father to teach him and his brother's to fly but she had won that argument and Father didn't teach them.

But they were young adults now. Canon assumed one day he'd leave home and see what the rest of the world was like but he was nervous about that. His home was special to him and though he knew he could return home at any point in his life, it was still hard. He'd miss the stream with the small waterfall, how it was usually frozen so that he had to break the thinner parts in order to drink water. The snow covered terrain with the trees and other plant life that would be beautiful in spring and summer. He imagined there would be animals around but during the colder months, not so much. It was warmer today, the snow was melting, becoming slush. Mom mentioned that it was likely to turn cold again, winter wasn't near its end yet but for now Canon was enjoying the weather.

The stallion continued his stroll. Canon liked walks, especially alone. It was quieter and gave him a chance to think. He needed to think too for he was sure Father would want to teach him, Zeke and Ayita how to fly soon. Unless Zeke and Ayita already learned how. Canon frowned. Why wasn't he intrigued by the thought of flying? Did other wind Soquili ever consider not flying or was it only him? Father wasn't going to be pleased. Shaking his head, he began walking in the direction of home. He could tell him....or not. Maybe Mom instead but would Mom understand? It wasn't like she had wings but she might help him explain to Father that flying wasn't appealing? Oh, he was so dead.

The crisp winter wind blew gently over the snow, and ran teasing fingers through the young stallion's mane as he trotted out into the meadow. It felt almost warm compared to the freezing gales that sometimes howled across the plains and into his little home. Zeke closed his eyes in pleasure as the breeze ran over his coat and ruffled the feathers on his wings. Oh, how he loved the wind. It was amazing how such a powerful force of nature could be so gentle and sweet, and yet was entirely invisible. Formless as it was, it almost seemed to speak to him at times. The wind beckoned to him, whistling through the trees in an ethereal song. He longed to answer that call, and sometimes, in secret, he did. He took to the skies and felt the wind all around him, and he was happy.

He knew his mother, especially, would disapprove. She was afraid of the skies, and the danger they posed if one were to fall from them. But horses could fall prey to the same danger on the ground, couldn't they? For the danger was not from the sky itself, but from gravity. If a horse lost his or her way in the fog, for example, it could easily result in a tumble down a ravine and a broken leg. Zeke shuddered at the thought. So Mother had a good reason to be afraid. He knew that she was simply trying to take care of her sons, but what good is that if they were smothered their whole lives, and denied their birthright? The young stallion longed to get out and to see the world, but this was impossible if Mother would not even let Father teach them how to fly!

Zeke twitched his wings and even unfurled them a bit, feeling restless. He had had enough of this quiet family life! He loved his brothers and would miss his parents dearly, but he knew there was more to life than quiet grazing and strolls through the meadow. He wanted to meet other horses, to see new sights, to hear new sounds. He wanted to see the world and everything in it! Zeke unconsciously sped up into a canter, caught up by the excitement of his imaginings. He felt the wind in his mane and broke out into a gallop, snow flying as he raced across the land. Breath steamed from his nostrils and his lips pulled into a fierce grin as he sped faster and faster. He spread his wings and felt the wind lifting them up, urging him into the sky. He took a deep breath and flexed the powerful muscles across his back, reading for a wild leap into the crisp, cool air.

Suddenly he saw a form off to the right, and noticed his older brother Canon wandering in the snow. He reluctantly furled his wings and veered off towards him, slowing to a canter before skidding to a stop. Panting, he grinned widely as snow sprayed out towards the other horse, though luckily none hit him. His brother would not have been pleased to be splattered with wet snow, warm as it was today.

"Brother!" he called happily. "What are you doing wandering alone all the way out here?" He eyed his brother's contemplative expression, and snorted. "It must be awfully lonely and boring." As he caught his breath, Zeke shook the snow from his hooves and tossed his head to bring his long wind-tangled mane into some semblance of neatness.
