It was a quiet night. Peaceful. The sun had slowly dipped its face beneath the horizon, and its dying colors splashed across the still-warm earth in some final attempt to leave its mark. She shifted silently through the grass, feeling it brush the ruffles against her feet and toy at her long, spaded tail. She was content, as always, to wander the dusk alone. It was how things had always been, even when she'd been young. Her father had been there for her, though, and that was enough. She would never forget him for that kindness. How could she, when he was just as much of a monster as she was? There was nothing to blame him for, however. Onyx eyes flickered minutely across the fields she was traveling, and Nyx paused for a moment to silently watch the last minutes of sunset. It was pretty. But could anyone look at such colors and see anything truly more than just another dying day? Not that the night was a terrible thing, not when it was so soothing... Her wings rustled absently by her sides, aching for flight though she knew better than to do such a thing in poor lighting. No, it was safest to keep walking for now, to get somewhere secluded and relatively safe. She knew what predators prowled when darkness fell. After all--she was sometimes one of them.

The stallion's favorite part of the day was night; he rather appreciated it as the weather got cooler and that it was easy for him to see in the dark increased his liking. He wasn't much of a morning one, and he usually took advantage of when his companions were sleeping to take a stroll around.
So they weren't asleep yet, but he had decided that they would be fine on their own, and left to prowl the lands, sometimes hoping to catch a glimpse of his two daughters. He never spoke of it, but he was always worried, blaming his negligence that he had lost all contact with them.
Houndoom heaved a sigh and walked on, keeping a sharp eye out for the distinguishing features of his daughters. For a moment, he thought the mare in front of him could be one of them, spotting her tail. But no, she was white, winged, just like the other one he had met before. Yet she possessed the tail he had, the one others often mistook as the mark of a kalona.
"It's beautiful." He commented softly, gazing at the sky as he trotted forward to be at her side.

She'd heard the rustles through the grass long before the dark shape had strode forth, quiet but always alert. These were dangerous lands now, especially when the sun went down. Should it be an approaching predator, well... She wasn't as easy of a meal as she might have looked. And the skies were always open to her. But no, she wasn't greeted with a snarl or the sensation of teeth sinking into her flank--just a pleasant enough statement of the skies she'd been observing.
A sidelong glance was enough to tell her volumes about her unexpected visitor; sleek, strong, and yet different enough that he could have been just as much of an outcast as she was. The horns that curled from his brow, and the hardened spines that tried in vain to curl about his ribs... His tail, too, like a devil's spade. Just like her own. The cuffs around his hooves only added to the image that he was some sort of bound demon, choosing to wander at night rather than the day. But what did she know? She could only assume, and she wasn't rude enough to openly pry.
"It is." She replied quietly, turning her face back into the streaming sunset. "And yet, it also feels somehow grave. The death of another day; we all move just a little further into life, whether we're ready or not." Silence bloomed for a moment as she pondered over her own words. Day in, and day out, wandering alone with no real sense of purpose. What else was waiting for her, even as she slogged mindlessly through time? There had to be something.
"Might I inquire what your name is?" Nyx asked after a moment, again pulling her gaze away from the vibrant colors to focus on the stranger. Ahh, now that she was looking, she could see the pale red that streaked his mane, face, and belly. An interesting stranger, this one.

He was somewhat hesitant, afraid that he was prodding his muzzle into the mare's own personal thinking time. Reikon had never liked it when he whinnied encouragements to speak his thoughts. He was the only outgoing one of his companions, and, he supposed, it made him more sensitive to whether others would take kindly to him.
He smiled. It sounded, probably like something Reikon would; the stallion liked gazing upon the sky often. "It is controlled by time after all. No one can stop it from making its way forward nor force it to retrace its steps."
"My name is Houndoom." He smiled, bowing his head in greeting as he always did. "And you are...?"

Ah, but at least he was wise and held no foolish ideals. "To spend time regretting it is only a waste." Nyx agreed quietly, resisting the urge to shake her head. Hadn't that been just what she'd been doing? He offered his name, and she accepted it with a small glance, her features impassive as he bowed his head in what she supposed he meant to be respectful. Kind of him, though the gesture was mostly lost on her.
"My name is Nyx." She responded, offering a small nod of her own as an afterthought. "...It isn't often someone's around to share a sunset with me. Are you usually out and about when it sets, or is this just a chance meeting?" It was harmless enough for a question, and hopefully not rude enough to reveal her bridling curiosity. Still, despite his appearance, he didn't seem to fit the description of a monster.
More of a gentleman, now that she was musing over it.

He nodded, a smile playing across his muzzle as he mused over the question she had posed. "I must confess I prefer the night. I guess, as it is rather early for my usual walk, it is indeed a chance meeting." "I am honored to meet you though, Nyx. It is not very often I meet others besides my companions."
She was a pretty mare, seemingly gentle...but ah, he himself had experience with those mistaking him for a kalona, a demon, with his looks. There was never knowing what one really was until there was proper conversation, unless they chose to hide behind a mask.

So he was somewhat of a loner himself, then? She understood that well. Still, he mentioned companions, and Nyx knew that despite their similarities, they likely had less in common than first thought. "It is a pleasure. I haven't met anyone much at all, so I'm afraid you're ahead of me there." She hardly minded, in retrospect. Still though... she was almost faintly amused that she'd been deceived by his appearance. Despite herself, Nyx felt she needed to at least ask. The worst that could happen would be she offended him--she could do little more than apologize and take her leave if that happened.
"Forgive me for asking, Houndoom... Though, I can't imagine the question will be new to you. At first glance, I would have called you a Kalona, though you lack the wings. Now, however, I'm not quite certain. I haven't seen horns like those before. Are you?" She inquired quietly, tilting her head only faintly to get a better look at his face.

"Ah." He smiled, bobbing his head in understanding. "Always with family, I suppose. Or you just prefer the company of yourself?" He had, he remembered, always spent time with his daughters when they were young, constantly protective of them...though not as protective as Ciaran was of the little butterfly, really. A small smirk came to his muzzle at the thought.
The smile remained as she posed her question. He had grown rather immune to others' belief of his apparent evil. "Ah, you are indeed right, Nyx. Many others I met have often had the wrong conclusion as well. I am not a Kalona." He shrugged.
