The sun was setting upon the horizon, just beginning to cast long shadows upon all that stood in its path. The sky was turning a rich orange, illuminating the clouds and highlighting their darker parts. Glowing a suttle yellow was the sun, floating just around the middle of the sky. Or so Kintori thought, staring down into the deep lake in front of her, admiring the way she looked even more beautiful in this particular light. She fluttered her white and yellow wings, allowing them to go out to their full span. She then twirled herself around slowly, allowing the full breathtaking effect to be taken in by the image reflected by the now-orange-tinted lake.

"I am beautiful," she said haughtily, shoving her yellow nose in the air. Flicking her unicorn-like tail she looked back down at the water, smiling with pleasure every time she saw her reflection. It was true, she was stunning. Unfortunately for others, she knew this was a fact.

Sunlight, sunbright.
How she hated the sunlight.

She longed for the tender touch of night, the deep embrace of darkness that brought her such comfort. The light made her feel exposed, vulnerable, and it certainly didn't help as she hunted. She could only stare at the sky, scowling at the pinks and oranges as the sun made a slow descent, inching it's way towards bed. Silently, she willed it faster, trying to force it down below the horizon. As soon as the darkness took old, she could wander and roam through the village, cause nightmares and feed on the fear they brought.

As she watched, she caught sight of something down by the lake. She peered down at it, squinting her brilliant red eyes. A soft sneer came to her face. It was nothing more than a Soquili, seemingly Wind with those big, white wings. Carefully, she considered the chances of a meal, but her stomach was full and she would have to hide the carcass, which meant moving and burying it. Too much hassle for such a small trinket. Instead, she watched, quietly observing the way fluttered her wings and paraded in a circle. It was as though she was trying to tempt the black Kalona into eating her. The way she stuck her nose in the air and declared her beauty, however, made Aiofe think she might get indigestion from eating that one.

With a loud snort, she began to pick her way down towards the other mare, her long, speared tail lashing gently behind her. This girl needed a reality check, but honestly, who was Aiofe to do it? No, she could have much more fun tormenting her with silly comments and little hints. After all, when a stallion came along and refused her for her obvious flaw, the she would simply laugh and say 'I told you so!' A small smirk curved along her lips and she stopped to size the other mare up. Slightly smaller than herself, but then again, most Winds were. It was the sight of that long, furry tail that caused Aiofe to realize that it was not simply a Wind, but an Alicorn. She groaned inwardly. This meant she would have to not only deal with the vanity issues, but also the bloodline issues.

Of course, compared to herself, the mare was a mutt.
True bloodlines are pure and true, never mixed.

"You have quite a mouth," she said boldly, an expression on her face that looked like a mix between amused and disgusted. "Honestly, if you're so beautiful, you don't need to go around shouting it at lakes. Someone would notice whether you mentioned it or not." The Kalona mare shrugged, seemingly bored. "Of course, with an attitude like that, not many would care to hang around and stare. Your ugly personality would probably put them off."

She yawned. Perhaps she was making assumptions too soon, but from what she could tell, she had pegged the Alicorn perfectly.

Still captivated by her reflection in the water, Kintori was startled when she heard the soft "crunch" of grass. Peering around, her soft, gray eyes caught a pair of glowing, red ones and she gasped. She stepped back, her golden hooves sunk into the soft marsh surrounding the lake, to take in the full image of the mare now standing only feet away. The first thing she noticed was the fact that the other was a Kalona. Kintori's eyes widened a bit in fright; she'd never actually met a Kalona - she'd only heard tales. As far as she knew all Kalona were blood-thirsty killers. The second thing she noticed was the sun continuing to climb down the sky, readying itself to leave Kintori in total darkness.

Sizing up the creature in front of her, Kintori decided that she wasn't totally hopeless. Sure, Kalona in themseleves were ugly creatures, but that didn't mean all of them were. The mare standing before her was predominantly black with pinkish-red markings that appeared slash-like. Her wings were black as pitch, and much, much larger than Kintori's own. She wore a frown, quite obviously unhappy with the sight of Kintori. 'Good,' Kintori thought with a smile.

When the Kalona mare started talking, Kintori stiffened. She was only out to make insults, was she? Rolling her eyes a bit, Kintori flicked her tail boredly. "I thought it was quite obvious that you don't need an extraordinary personality when you're as alluring as I," Kintori explained. At least, in her mind it was obvious - if you had a great personality, you could be as ugly as possible. But if you were beautiful on the outside, it didn't matter how airheaded, evil, or nasty you were. It was simple logic.
