It was the middle of winter, and although there was no snow on the ground this particular morning, the bitter chill in the air seemed to seep into one's very bones. The trees were all bare, save for the occasional pine, which gave the landscape an unfamiliar, somewhat barren appearance.

Making her way through the short, brittle grass that glittered with frost, Us'ali was slowly learning the lay of the land. She was still young, but was already learning which streams didn't freeze over, and where the most protection from the harsh winds could be found. Today, however, she was enjoying the lack of snow. Standing at the riverbank, she looked out across the water, smiling to herself as the lithe, scaley form of a fish broke the surface--it was an unusual sight, given the cold.

With or without snow, winter still held and icy cold, tight grip over the land. The trees that surrounded the clearing, which Djamila had been calling home for close to a week now, were bare and did nothing to stop the cold from seeping in. The only protection Djamila had from the bitter chill was the pelt draped across her back and shoulders. It took the worst out of the cold, but especially this morning, the young mare still felt cold.

There was a small stream winding nearby that Djamila had quickly learned was one of the few that didn't freeze during winter. Ignoring the overwhelming chill in her bones, Djamila pushed herself to stand; though, she did take a moment once on all fours to steady herself. It took only a couple minutes longer than usual to reach the stream, Djamila studying the unfamiliar land as she went along. When she arrived at the stream, the strangest thing she saw wasn't the leaping fish. No, it was another mare! Standing on the opposite riverbank, with bright feathers in her mane, was a mare that looked around the same age as Djamila. A smile quickly spread across her face, delighted to have found company. "Hello! Good morning!" Djamila called across the short distance between them.

Us'kali started, jerked from her reverie by the greeting of the other mare. It was fortunate, she noted wryly to herself, that the other seemed friendly. "Good morning," she replied, smiling back, and inclining her head slightly. The action obscured most of her face from view, hiding it behind a pale curtain of hair.

She eyed the other mare curiously, paying particular attention to the pelt she wore across her back--did it help keep the edge off the biting cold? Unwilling to risk offense, however, Us'kali refrained from asking the question aloud.

"I wasn't expecting to see anyone else up and about, not this early," she observed, motioning at the still-grey sky, only just beginning to lighten with the rising sun.
