Shimaumaneko lay curled up on a sand bank in the middle of a stream. Her blue and brown coloring helped her blend in somewhat with her surroundings, as she tried to enjoy the day. Unfortunately, with ever snap of a twig, or bird call, or splash of water, Mau seemed to jumped and shiver with fear. She was simply afraid, afraid of everything. Mau didn't like being so scared all the time, but she couldn't help it. Fear was all she had grown up knowing, fear of the dark, fear of spiders, fear of being eaten... or being beaten... Mau just didn't like the world, it was all so scary and dangerous, and she didn't even have any friends to help her through it. She just closed her eyes, and lived on, hoping someday it would all just end...

Aki was walking through the forest following a trail he had made a few days ago when he had gone exploring. He had been walking for hours simply enjoying the nature all around him, at one point watching a bird, another looking at a flower as he carefully avoided stepping on anything living in his path. Slowly growing thirsty he started making his way to a stream he had known was nearby. He chose where he stepped carefully as he padded along coming closer to the stream until it was within his sight, just through the bushes.

Mau shivered uncontrollably, while vainly trying to control his fear. It wasn't any use, she just couldn't get herself to calm down. For most of her life, Mau had been afraid, afraid of everything, and over the years it just got worse. She huddle up on her little sand bank island, and hoped that no one would find her. Every time she met some one, Mau froze with fear, she was too afraid to even run, it was embarrassing. So she just lay there, and wished everything scary would just go away...

Aki frowned, tilting his head as he stepped through the bushes and saw something shaking in the middle of the river. At least he thought it was shaking, maybe his mind was playing tricks on him, but he doubted it. He slowly stepped over towards the river his eyes locked on the tiny movements as he tried to figure out just what the creature was, it seemed like it would have blended in perfectly with the river and the stones if it wasn't moving. 'Why is it shaking anyway? is it cold? It would be a whole lot warmer if it wasn't in the water' he thought before dipping his head down and taking a drink from the river, he quickly swallowed the water before taking a few steps towards the shaking thing, his fur around his paws getting wet as he stepped in the river, "hello?"

Mau curled up into a little ball, pressing her eye shut, hoping, wishing, that when she opened her eyes again, nothing would be scary anymore. She lay there, the sand grinding beneath her claws as Mau took deep breaths and held her position. Suddenly, she heard the sound of some one in the water, and Mau's mind began to race. This is your chance... you can do it... they can't be that scary... but what if they hurt me... what if they get angry and try to kill me... its happened before... it could happen again... no... no no no no no... go away who ever you are... go away... Mau willed and willed with all her heart that whoever this new person one, that they would just go away. Then, the thing spoke... it said hello... Hello? Hello... it said hello... what does it me..? Was that anger in its voice...? Oh please don't let it be angry... OH NO! Maybe I'm in its territory... oh god... I'm going to die...
Mau took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down, Maybe you just aren't giving them a chance... they can't be that bad... ok.. you'll look at them... 3...2...1.. As she counted down in her head, Mau readied herself, an when she reached 1, Mau jerked her head up and looked at the newcomer. It took a couple of moments for her eyes to adjust to the sudden light, and what she saw scared the living daylights out of her.... Bushy fur that stood out differently than most dragonfly... strange ears... it was scary. Mau's eyes flew open wide and she only had enough to let out startled, "Eep!" before her throat constricted so tightly that she could barely even breath.

Aki sat in the shallow water, his head tilted off to the side as he watched the shaking thing, it seemed kind of panicking whatever it was. His ears flicked back and forth as he watched, "ummm errr.." he wasn't sure what to say, he didn't want to scare it more. He stood up deciding that perhaps he could comfort it and hesistantly took a step forward...
As its head snapped up his eyes widened and he stumbled backwards falling onto his backside, "oof," he almost lost his breath as he looked at the other dragonfly a little startled. A smile spread across his face as he realized he had scared her, and so he rose from his spot. "Are you ok?" he asked raising an eyebrow, he didn't mean to scare her, he couldn't imagine that he was all that scary in the first place.

Mau shrunk into the ground, her ears completely lain back, her tail curled under her body. I must look rather pitiful... oh curse you Mau calm down he isn't going to hurt you......... how do you know...? How can you say he wont hurt me... he could... he would... he is strong... he'll look at me and see my shaking and think I'm weak... He'll end me... he'd be doing a service to the society if he felled some one as weak as me... oh god I don't want to die... but wouldn't my fear end...? Wouldn't it end if I just died...? Mau mentally shook her head and tried to take deep breaths, willing her throat to loosen up. But it was no use, she gulped and gulped, trying to wet her suddenly dry mouth, but could do nothing but sit there an stare.

Aki watched her strange behavior, maybe she didn't hear him? he tried again, "umm are you o..k..?" He said slowly taking a step forward as if he was trying not to scare away a small animal he wanted to observe. "I'm sorry if i scared you," he said choosing his words carefully. He pawed at the pebbles in the water nervously, he wasn't sure how to behave around someone so frightened, so he decided it would be best to show he meant no harm and to take things slow, it was clear she must have suffered from something horrible in order to be this scared.

Mau began to tear her mind apart trying to think of a good response to what this new being was saying. Am I ok...? I guess I am fine... I am in no pain physically... not yet anyways... I wont be ok if he doesn't keep his temper. But they never do keep it, they never did. I always hoped they wouldn't hurt me... but they always did... why would this one be any different...? Mau blinked as she realized that after all that thinking, she hadn't come up with a single thing to say! Her eyes swiveled around wildly, as if she were looking for an escape. Why do you want to run so badly? He hasn't tried to hurt you... not YET... who cares! He hasn't hurt you... he seems' worried.. why don't you say something to him... Why should I say something to him...? Don't I want him to go away...? ... ... ... DO you want him to go away...? Mau wasn't sure about that, did she want him to go away? No... no she didn't. She hoped he would be different, maybe help her... maybe be... her friend... Mau gulped one more time, as the word 'friend' ran through her mind, and she finally felt her throat relax enough for her to say something. "W...who ARE you...?" Mau squeaked, barely saying the words as it were...

Aki sat, waiting patiently for an answer, 'maybe she can't speak?... or maybe I've just scared the words right out of her?' he frowned and his ears flicked back at the sudden sound of her voice. He smiled, "me? I'm Aki," he chuckled puffing out his chest proudly and straightening up, though he wasn't entirely sure why. He tilted his head his right ear flopping over to the side so it lay against the side of his face, "how about you?" he asked slowly, noting her panicked expression. The male looked at her wondering why she was so frightened, he couldn't imagine he was all that scary, perhaps there was another reason?

Mau blinked and snorted, it was the only way she could laugh in the position she was in. The way his ear flopped over, it was... dare she think it... cute. Mau chased the thought out of her mind and shivered, trying to get a little more control over herself. She stared down at the ground and tried to reply with her name, "I'm.. Sh... sh... sh..." Mau coughed and gave up trying to say her full name and just said, "I'm Mau..." She was beginning to get a reign on her fear, and now her pertifying shyness was kicking in... He isn't THAT scary... Aki... that isn't a scary name... I think... I hope he stays not-scary... I hope he doesn't get angry... Mau shivered again at the though of the big male attacking her... it would only be too easy to end her life. She stared at the ground, wondering what he would do next....

Aki grinned, she seemed slightly less scared now, was there something funny about his name? He raised an eyebrow and looked at her rather curiously, "nice to meet you Mau," he chuckled quietly wondering what she had started to say. He stood up and took a few steps forward, "are you cold?" he asked with a frown, he could see she was shivering, wouldn't it be warmer to get out of the water? Though he didn't find it particularly cold. "I'm sure you would be a lot warmer if you weren't in the middle of the river."

Mau blinked, slightly confused at what Aki said, He thinks I'm... cold...? Why...? I... I'm not cold... scared yes... shy yes... cold no... Mau thought about it for a little longer and her eyes lost some of their panicked look to them. He must think my scared shivering is me being cold.... oh he doesn't understand... I didn't really think he would but... oh well... at least he cares... for now... Mau stared at the ground and muttered a reply, "I'm.... I'm ok... I d...d...d...don't need t...to move...." Actually, Mau was still weary of this new male, and she didn't want to get any closer. She shrunk back slightly at the thought of getting up and walking towards him....

Aki looked at her rather awkwardly and sat down, "oh... ok then," he said blinking slowly as he looked at her. "Well... are you stuck or something?" he frowned, he was really curious as to why she was sitting in the middle of the river in the first place. Why didn't she move if she was shivering? Was she shivering for some other reason? He raised an eyebrow and looked at her for a little while, "why are you in the middle of the river anyway?" he asked slowly, wanting an answer to satisfy his curiosity, she did seem a little strange after all for being so scared. He got scared every once and a while but it always passed rather quickly...

Mau's eyes shot wide as she kept on staring at the ground, he was asking so may questions! She couldn't possibly answer them all... her heart would stop! Mau froze and almost choked up again, but she took a couple deep breaths and relaxed a bit. She hated being put on the spot. Mau decided to answer all questions as once... yes... thats what she would do... She took a deep breath and mumbled her reply, "I... I'm not really in the water... I'm s.. siting on this s... sand...." Mau tried to look up at Aki but could not, she couldn't bare to see his eyes that could turn angry and evil at any moment. Instead and kept on staring at the ground and asked a question that had been nagging her mind for a while now, "W... w... why do you... .... ... care...?"
