There were so many adjustments to be made with Viviane in her life. Hartley still had trouble believing she was real- the combination of horse and human was so startlingly odd that Hartley always expected to wake up, as if this was a long, long dream.

But, of course, it wasn't. Viviane tottered behind Hartley everywhere, on legs as small as a foal's. Everything seemed to scare her, but she was none the less an extremely loving... child... thing. What could Hartley even call her? She was like a mythical centaur, dressed in modern clothes and with frightened red eyes.

Today Hartley was trying to encourage Viviane to take a run, to stretch her long white legs and strengthen them. They always looked so spindly and precarious. If she could just put some muscle on them, Hartley would feel better.

"Please? Just a short little run? No one will see you here. No one will scare you." But Viviane was stalwartly refusing.

Snow, snow, pretty snow~ Snow, snow, snow~ Bernadette giggled gleefully and flopped back in a pile of snow, moving her arms and legs to make a funny looking snow angel. The size of her coat was what made it look strange, Cold Mommy had insisted that she bundle up before she took her to the park so that she wouldn't get sick. She wasn't bundled up as much at Cold Mommy though, who had made sure that every inch of her skin was protected from the sun, with just a thick veil to cover her eyes so she could watch her daughter safely.

Bern happily sang her little snow song as she gracelessly climbed off her snow angel and hopped up to her feet, turning around to look at her creation. Hm...her coat made it look like a very fat angel, but it had a dress shape too! How perfect!

"Mommy! Mommy! I made an angel!" The little girl called out to Claudine, grinning proudly. She was loud enough to be heard by Claudine, but also loud enough to be heard by anyone else in the quiet park.

Viviane had gathered herself up, resolute. The snow did look fun, and if Hartley said it was okay, then she would believe her. After all, she was dependent on Hartley for everything else, and the young woman hadn't failed her yet.

Tugging her little yellow sweatshirt closer to her skinny body, Viviane wandered off the safety of the path, falling into the deep snow up to her knees. Instead of scaring her, she laughed. The sound of joy was good to Hartley. She had afraid that would set Viviane off in another fit of fear, but she seemed to be genuinely enjoying herself.

"Snow is so cold!" Well, way to stay the obvious. Hartley grinned a little, but didn't bother to correct Viv. Ugh, when did she get so considerate of other's feelings? Maybe when she became a sort of de-facto mother. Well, this wasn't what she had signed up for at all.

Just when things seemed to be going so well, a loud noise startled Viviane. Leaping forward, the little centaur girl bolted, managing to run straight towards Bernadette, her senses flooded. At the last moment Viviane veered away, though a collision had very nearly taken place, from Hartley's point of view. She dashed after her little charge, her two legs not taking her as fast as four legs. Oh god, there was a kid in the snow. Had Viviane been hurt? Did the kid see Viviane? Did the parents see?

"Oh Jesus, I'm so sorry. Did you get hurt kid? Viviane means well. She's just... spirited." That was one way to put it. On closer examination, the other child was rather strange looking as well, enough to give Hartley pause, while Viviane sidled cautiously behind her, eyeing the other girl with wide, red eyes.

Claudine had smiled behind her veil and waved a glove hand at her cheery daughter, perfectly content with sitting here under this snow-covered tree where there was less sun hitting her completely covered body. Bernadette would understand, Claudine had explained to her many times that the sun would hurt Mommy very much so she was never to be directly exposed to it. At least it was alright for her to do this at least. She had been worried the reflection of the sun might get under her dress, but her dress was much too long for light to get under.

But neither female was prepared for what happened as a result of Bern's loud cheering. Bern heard the galloping footsteps behind her and whirled around, gasping and staring wide-eyed at the horse girl that was running right at her. Oh god! Oh god! She couldn't move! She was too scared! The little girl screamed and covered her head, huddling up in her spot and shaking with fright of the impending collision that was bound to occur.

...

Any moment now...

Huh? Bern blinked and slowly sat up as an unfamiliar woman's voice was heard, staring up at the other mother with wide eyes. She didn't even notice Claudine had gotten up and ran to hold her when she'd realized something was coming at her. Huh? What had she said? Oh, she was asking if she was hurt. Bern frowned and shook her head, clinging to the fabric of Claudine's thick cloak. The woman sighed with relief at the action. She was okay.

"I...it's okay..." Bernadette finally managed to get out, looking right back at the other girl staring at her. She looked her age! "A-are you okay?"

Viviane peered around Hartley's shoulders once more, trying to be less frightened, and failing miserably at it. Hartley elbowed the girl to speak- Viviane looked fine, and the only thing bruised was probably her confidence. When it came to confidence bruising, Viviane was a hemophiliac.

"I'm... I'm.. o-okay." Viviane was stuttering at the exact speed her hurt was pumping, which made her more pathetic than sympathetic. Oh well. You couldn't win all your battles- or most of them, in Viviane's case.

"It's okay. You sure you're fine?" It was clear that Hartley was going to have to do the talking. "She's just very shy. And she doesn't like to talk." And she's half a horse, Hartley almost added. But that would be pointing out the obvious. Besides, this little girl wasn't altogether human herself.

"I'm Hartley. The scared one is Viviane. She's uh... She's sort of my kid, I guess. I watch over her." As much as humanly possible, she added to herself. "Who are you?" Hartley wasn't used to speaking to kids, and found herself directing her question more towards the other adult in the situation. Children still made her feel somewhat awkward, despite now having one (for all intents and purposes). Oh well. They did make a right pair.
