Orli sat on the edge of the picnic blanket and pulled the picture book in her lap open. Her vision was framed with a fleecy hood and a woolen scarf, but between the layers of fabric, her eyes were bright and alert and her skin was flushed pink. It wasn't as cold as it had been recently, but it was still chilly. Still, the fact that it was no longer blizzard conditions was rather nice and had led her mother to proclaim today as a picnic, complete with corned beef sandwiches and a big thermos of hot cocoa.
Orli focused on her picture book. In the story, it was summer. She tried to read some of it, but she was still a bit shaky on her letters and the bigger words tended to swim around on the page. Something about a beach. It was entirely unseasonable for that now - there was still snow on the ground. Her older siblings, Ranza and Nahuel, were a bit of a ways off having a snowball fight between the scattered trees of the park. The girl ached to join them but knew she wouldn't be able to keep up with them.
She could not read the book. She pretended that they all got eaten by sharks and flipped the page. It made for a much more interesting story.

Tasleen toddled along the snowy path, her backpack filled with freshly baked goodies that her and Abi had worked on that morning. They had made her favourite, sweet teacakes and had even added raisins as a special treat. Along with that was a small thermos filled with cider and her prized journal.
The weather was really cold and she didn't like it too much, but Abi had made sure to bundle her up extra warm, with a huge fluffy scarf wrapped around her face.
Holding Abi's hand she smiled from behind the warm clothes, as she saw a small group of children having a snowball fight in the distance. Flapping her wings with excitement she was about to take off in that direction when she saw another little girl sitting on a blanket a little ways away from the rowdy game.
Maybe she'd like to play too, she thought happily. Making her way over to the little girl she saw that she was reading a pretty picture book. Pushing her scarf down off her mouth she plopped happily beside the other girl and smiled warmly. "Hullo there, watchya reading?"
