Despite hastening his stride the last few feet rook arrived at the corner just in time to see the walk signal flash from go to do not cross. With a soft sigh he leaned against a nearby mailbox and waited for the signal to change again.

The boy was been walking home from the nearby park where he'd gone to clear his head becuase he was having strange feelings lately and they didn't make any sense to him. Although the merry go round had comfortingly reminded him of Galleai neither it nor the other equipment had done much to take away how he felt.

Iselda was clutching her small purse (fashionably matching the rest of her outfit; who said baby blue was out this season?), staring at everything and everyone with deep suspicion.

This was her first time walking to Magdelen's house - or, well, anywhere really - and She Had Gotten Lost. It fully deserved the capital letters in her mind, for she had no way to contact her friend, the house or even her mother and even though the driver (the slacker had loaded her off at a street corner with directions and gone to meet his hot date) had written her directions, they could at best be considered very, very general ones.

She tried desperately to ignore the other people lurking around the cross, having already surveyed them and deeming them unsuitable. If only the light would change soon so she could just get going!

Rook quickly noticed the strange looks a pretty blond haired girl was giving the group. She didn't look very happy to be outside or with the others standing at the crosswalk. Crimson eyes locked onto the piece of paper in her hand .For all he knew the paper was nothing but there didn't seem to be any need for her to be holding it at this moment unless there was something she needed on it like instructions or an address or phone number. Still, being curious he took a step words her, " Are you ok, lost?" His voice was soft and gentle and although Rook knew he looked unusual to some he was trying his best to look non threatening

Iselda gave a start when the strange boy at the mailbox approached her and actually spoke to her!

"What?" Her voice was a bit sharper than was polite, but she couldn't help it; he just looked so, so.. freaky. If she hadn't been taking lessons on acting polite with Anna, she'd surely have shuddered in revulsion from being this close to a creature like him.

"I asked if you were lost" Rook said softly, his crimson eyes flicking between the girl and the lights, he wanted to help, her but if they changed he'd have to start walking. As the boy spoke his tail swayed behind him like lazy cat's showing that he was clearly unbothered by the girl's tone, at least for now.

" I live around here, I could help if you're lost" Rook could also read a little so he might be able to help if recognizing street names was the problem. Not that he was even sure the girl was lost, she might just not like being around strangers.

She wavered between sending him off with a sharp retort as her instinct was telling her to and accepting his help. Her mother would surely be mad if she knew what she was contemplating - Elena wasn't one for consorting with strangers, especially strangers of considerably lower class than herself.

But on the other hand, she was lost, and there wasn't much chance of her finding Magdelen's house by herself. Certainly Anna had praised her fast learning skills, but even then she wasn't able to read more than a few words.

None of which, inconveniently, were written on the piece of paper her driver had handed her.

"Oh, very well." She sighed before handing over the slip of paper, hoping that he would be able to make more sense of it than she. "These are the directions to my friend's house, but ahh.." Iselda shifted uneasily, loath to admit that she couldn't do something; "I can't quite seem to read them." She finally admitted.

Rook took the piece of paper containing the direction and nodded " It's ok, I didn't know how to read not so long ago either." In truth the boy was still learning a lot, but he was familiar with the street names around where he lived. Most other street names weren't too hard to figure out, plus directions like left and right were words he already knew becuase Bishop and Andrea had helped teach him as had his short time at school so far.

Looking down at the paper he quickly scanned the first line and figured out that to begin with they first needed go be two sets of lights up then turn left. All in all the rest of the directions didn't look too long so it wouldn't be a crazy cross town trek but it would be a bit tricky to get there. " I know where to go" he said

The lights changed then and a walk signal was given, Rook turned his gaze to the golden haired girl and offered a three fingered hand, she was nervous and it was only right to offer to hold her hand.

She might have said something along the lines of 'you don't say' if she herself currently weren't unable to read. As it was, Iselda couldn't quite stop the slight curling of her lip, though she did try. It wasn't a very good try.

"Well then, shall we?" She artfully ignored his hand, very deliberately not looking anywhere below his shoulders (she could always claim she hadn't seen it if pressed) before moving over the street with as long a stride as her dress permitted. Really, she should ask Anna about acquiring some of those trousers she saw other girls wearing.

She stopped on the opposite sidewalk, waiting for her temporary escort to catch up and take the lead again.

Rook was somewhat startled and disturbed by the snubbing which he felt was undeserved. The boy knew he was unconventional looking but he certainly wasn't the strangest thing to every be spotted wandering Gaia.

A little sad he reached the other side and nodded directly in front of them. " We keep walking this way till we hit two more sets of lights" Rook informed the girl.

Maybe he wasn't, but he was certainly the strangest Iselda had ever had to deal with so far. She did suppose he hadn't been entirely too bad, but he was just so damn freaky to look at.

"Very well." She sighed, an edge of suffering to her voice: "I suppose.. thank you." It was polite, and Iselda had been taught that politeness was key, but all the same she secretly vowed that she would not say it again. The creature better take what he was given, because this was all she was offering.

The pair walked silently the next two blocks, Rook uncertain what to say aside from a quick " You're welcome" and not wanting to force the girl to talk to him. It was weird this strange sad feeling building in him, he didn't understand why he'd been rejected, after all he was nothing but nice and helpful.

When they reached the required lights he consulted the direction's again. Left down this round the right at the house just before the school. This time the boy simply turned left and didn't offer his hand. Still, a part of him found the silence awkward.

No part of Iselda found the silence in any way awkward - rather, she relished in it. The thing wasn't talking, being threatening or in any way moving to distress her and that, to her, was a feat.

As they moved along, her feet began to ache, unused to this much exercize: until recently she'd barely been able to wobble, after all!

"Are we there yet?" There was a slight edge of impatience to her voice, but it was well-hidden under a polite layer of scorn. Really, any passing vocal conneiseurs would have marvelled at the amount of emotion in that one sentence.

They were fortunately almost there by the time the girl spoke. Consulting the direction again Rook noted that the house in question was just at the corner of the street they were currently on " Yes" he pointed to the house in question " That's where you're supposed to go, do you think you can get the rest of the way alone?" Rook hadn't meant to sound insulting but he imagined the words hadn't come out in the way he'd wanted them too.

Iselda took affront to the way the strange thing had spoken to her, but decided to hold her peace for now. He had been moderately helpful, and there was no reason to start an argument now that she was so close to someone actually worth spending her time with.

"Very well. Goodbye." She nodded curtly and set off for the house, staunchly ignoring the other child now that she had no further need for him. Magdelen was probably waiting, after all.

For his own part Rook shuddered at the altogether unpleasant experience , turned and headed back the way he had come, needing to get home. it was weird to meet someone who didn't like him especially when he hadn't even done anything to her. The three fingered boy supposed there were just people like that out there, people who just weren't nice. Still, it had been a lesson for the young boy and it was not one he was likely to forget soon.
