Harmony walked alone, as always, by the side of a crystal clear river, staring into it's depths while pondering the thoughts of the fish and other wildlife that inhabited it's gently flowing water. Lost in thought as she so often was, she was oblivious to any other presence. Not that it mattered who was around. She was too absorbed in her mind to care, and was firmly convinced that, no matter who came across her in these parts, she would remain undisturbed.

The river fascinated him, both because of its seemingly endless run across the landscape, as well as its varied and powerful moods. He'd seen it as it was now, peaceful and serene, and he'd also seen it churning with the anger of the spirits, tossing waves against the bank and threatening any who would venture close. The river was alive, and as any wise explorer would, he submitted to her will and varied his explorations depending on what the river's face was that day.
Because it had been calm and inviting, he'd walked along its side for a while, listened to the sounds of nature, watched the shadows play games with the light against the forest floor. It calmed him where he might have been restless, and inspired him to think long thoughts on longer days. After a time, as the river widened and the treeline grew closer, he had to make a decision: cross, or depart into the trees?
It wasn't all that cold, so he opted to wade in. Certainly he shivered at first, but Jonquil preferred to get bad things over with as quickly as possible, so before he gave himself much time to think about it, he plunged into the water up to his neck and began to swim. The first frantic splashes soon receded into a gentle ripple behind him, he weaving his way across the river for both exercise and the simple joy of swimming.
Ahead, he caught sight of another Soquili, though from the distance he couldn't tell if it was a stallion or mare. Regardless, his interest was caught, and she shifted his direction, heading for the bank. Socialization would be a nice reprieve from his own constant company.
"Hello." Dripping from neck to hooves, his mane and tail heavy with water, he remained a significant distance away. He didn't want to get her wet, after all, when he shook. After doing so, he trotted over, still quite damp, but at least not making a sopping mess of himself all over the ground.
Ears pricked forward, expression friendly, he greeted, "I'm Jonquil."

Harmony looked up, a shocked expression on her face. Was he really talking to her? "Um....Hello. I'm Harmony." She blinked, her mind racing a thousand miles a minute. No one usually paid her any attention, especially not when she was so focused on thinking about something. Now that someone had, she was at a loss for words.
She looked over the stallion that had approached her.He was slightly taller than she, with a purple and tan coat accented with faint stripes on his back legs. She had never seen the like of him. Rather intrigued, she pondered why he had approached her in the first place. Not that she would ask him, of course. What if he disapproved of her forwardness? No, she would not risk rejection from this stallion. She would remain silent...unless he asked her a question, or she had something to say that wouldn't offend him in any manner. But since she knew nothing about what would offend him, she wondered if she would say much of anything at all.

When the mare merely introduced herself and fell into a silence, Jonquil wondered if he'd disturbed her. True, it had looked like she was intent on examining the water, and perhaps he'd scared a fish away or done something to interrupt deep thoughts of hers. If that was the case, he ought to apologize.
Shifting his weight from hoof to hoof, he responded, "It's nice to meet you, Harmony. Did I disturb you?"

"Oh! No, you didn't disturb me. I was just thinking." She peered at him shyly, wondering why he was so kind to her. Could it be that he was just a nice guy? Harmony smiled softly, thinking that if this was so, then the world was a far better place than she had thought it to be.
She shuffled in place slightly, her nervousness showing. She had been left alone for most of her journey. She didn't really know what was expected of her. Was she supposed to ask him a question back?

"I'm glad." Expression settling into the easy lines of a smile, he swished his tail, not at all bothered by the fact that she seemed a little shy. He'd dealt with all kinds before, and enjoyed all kinds equally, and it had been a while since he'd spoken with a shy mare. It was a little refreshing, though he couldn't say exactly why; he enjoyed his outgoing mare friends, but a change in pace was nice every once in a while.
Peering at the river with her, he examined it a moment, then found that there was nothing really out of the ordinary with it. Of course, he was of the opinion that nature in all it's ordinary habits was quite splendid, but it didn't make for much of a good conversation when things were exactly as they always were. He had a feeling Harmony would need a little coaxing, and so he cast around in his mind for a good topic.
That failing, he simply decided on, "What were you thinking of? If you don't mind my asking, of course."

She couldn't understand it. Why was he being so nice to her? He seemed interesting, engaging, and kind, but why would he pay her any mind? Harmony had never encountered such a kind-hearted soul, and she didn't really know how she was to behave. Around her family, it was allowed, no, expected, to behave in a quiet and contemplative manner. Her father was a great thinker, soft-spoken, distant, and strong. But this stallion seemed an entirely different sort than her father.
"What I was thinking of?!" She asked, a slightly shocked expression on her face. She wondered if this was a usual custom, asking one to reveal their deepest thoughts upon a first meeting. Perhaps...perhaps it would be alright if she complied with his request. After all, if he was being so kind, perhaps he would be accepting of her thoughts, too.
"I...I was just wondering about the animals and plants that live in the river. Thinking that maybe they had lives and thoughts such as we do...and wondering if they looked up at us and wondered what our lives were like."
It was the most she had spoken to anyone since going on her journey, and a slight blush crept into her features. Slightly embarrassed for her own thoughts, she shook her bangs into her eyes and waited for his response, hoping that his kindness was genuine, and that he wouldn't call her silly like others had.
