It hadn't actually been that long. Magdelen could count the full days of school she'd made it through on one hand- her dad kept pulling her out for doctor's appointments or she would hurt too much to continue with the day. It sucked pretty hard. Even today came with the warning signs of a Bad Day- and for once, she had nothing scheduled!

She sighed and slumped into her desk. Language arts, who cared, it wasn't important at all! Was it? She tugged on her heavy sweater, pulled the high collar up over her mouth and nose. Shallow breaths. Calming breaths. If she could make it through this first class, she could take her painkillers again. That was the schedule.

Then something walked through the doors that was better than painkillers. Finally, a familiar face! "Iselda," Magdelen squeaked, sitting up straight in her chair. Her hair had grown so long since they'd stolen eclairs together! It looked kind of inconvenient, actually...

It was, as a matter of fact. Her hair had grown overnight, as fast as her body, and both made it rather hard for Iselda to move gracefully; the result was something of a retro robot trying to boogie. Everytime she would get the hang of walking properly, her hair would get tangled up in her legs; every time she managed to walk without her hair getting in her way, she miscalculated the length of her newly grown limbs and nearly twisted her ankle.

It wasn't exactly a recipe for success, and the little girl had been very tempted to ask to start school on another day - but on the other hand, staying cooped up in the mansion with the maids who shrieked every time she looked their way was positively dull.

So she'd gone. And apparently her first class was something called.. 'Language Arts'? Well enough. She'd found the classroom without much more hassle than herself.

"Magdelen?" Her voice was slightly disbelieving, but a smile was nonetheless blooming on her lips as she made her way over to the other girl.

"Your hair," said Magdelen in a tone of awe. She shoved someone's stuff off the desk next to hers so that her friend could sit down. "It's so long!" And even prettier than last time! "Why haven't you done anything with it?"

She wanted to reach over and touch it, to see if it felt so soft as she thought it might, but it didn't seem polite to do that right off.

Iselda took the seat next to her friend, trying to look dainty while keeping her newly grown limbs under control.

"Well.." She smiled delicately, censoring her words. "I'm not particularly well-versed in the art of hairdressing quite yet." In truth, she had no idea what could be done with her hair, and none of the maids had wanted to come within reach of her, much less style her hair.

"But look at you!" Iselda did a once-over of the other girl, noticing that she too had grown exponentially. "What happened to the frills and laces?" She pouted cutely; she'd liked the frills and laces.

She couldn't take her eyes off Iselda's hair. It was so... gorgeous! So Iselda! It was perfect for the other girl. The only problem was that it was everywhere, and so long. "I know something," she said, but then Iselda asked about her clothes.

"I'm sick," she mumbled. "All the frills and laces got in the way." Besides, her sweaters were so much more comfortable. And then there were the leather things from Asimov that were well-worn and soft. She liked those too.

Then, subject change! "I can braid it for you. Your hair? That way you won't trip anymore."

"Really?" She'd seen braids around, and in her experience they looked both fantastic and very, very complicated to do. She turned hopeful eyes to Magdelen: "You know how to braid?"

The comment about sickness was put on the backburner until she'd gotten rid of the more pressing problem; her hair.

"Uh-huh," Magdelen said proudly. "One of my dad's friend's daughters taught me. I can even french braid." She held out both hands (which were quite clean). Then she tossed her own hair (it fell right back into its bowl cut) and said, "Want me to do yours?"

Iselda looked suitably impressed. "That would be quite perfect." She swept her hair over her shoulder from where it'd been resting in her lap; this was, though not a particularly pretty position, the easiest way to keep her hair from getting caught in the chair's legs or getting dirty from the floor. When falling down her back, it tended to make a small pile on the ground whenever she sat down.

"Can you work with it like this, or do I need to stand up?"

"I can do it," she said, standing up herself. It would be a little hard, because she'd never worked with hair quite this long before, but she could do it. Carefully, Magdelen pulled her friend's hair out of her face, saying "Wow, soft," because it really was. And once it was parted correctly, she started braiding it. Maybe, if she did this every day, she'd do it faster, but today she just went at the best pace she could. Class hadn't started yet, but it might soon, after all!

She had finished braiding the long bits around the crown of Iselda's head when she thought of something to ask. "How long have you been grown-up, Iselda?"

Iselda gave a soft sigh of pleasure before registering Magdelen's question; "Hmm? Oh, not very long.. Yesterday morning, really. What about you? You seem far more comfortable than I do with this new body."

"A couple of weeks," said Magdelen. She was almost halfway done now. "Your hair's still gonna be really long but it'll be shorter this way. It's really pretty."

She turned her head away from her friend and coughed into her shoulder. "Shopping is no fun, especially for our size." Although, Magdelen was tall enough to wear really small clothes made for teens- size 0 or similar. "Your clothes are pretty, though," she added kindly.

"I doubt anything short of chopping the stuff off could shorten my hair too dramatically." She smirked wryly. "And really? That's rather a long time, isn't it?" She was a bit peeved that her friend had grown so much sooner than her (she was so co-ordinated! Not fair at all), but Iselda supposed rather later than never, as Anna so aptly put it.

"Thank you." She retorted, graciously, after shooting a veiled, but concerned glance at Magdelen. "Are you alright?"

She frowned. "Don't cut it off, your hair is so pretty!" Shrugging, Magdelen pulled out a string from the front of her backpack and used it to tie off the end of her friend's braid. Her own hair didn't seem to want to grow at all, it was kind of depressing. Not like she would grow it out anyway...

"Yeah, fine," she said, watching Iselda warily. "Don't tell the teachers. They... are a little weird." Well, they were only weird because Luka had been at them after the first time she'd had a real problem during class. "Are you all right?"

Iselda laughed freely for the first time since she'd been born from a cabbage in a sun-room in a mansion that'd never quite feel like home. "I wouldn't, I promise!"

"Weird? And of course not." Her voice turned affronted; she wouldn't let down her friend like that, and it obviously would be a let-down to Magdelen.

"Yes, I'm quite alright." She smiled genuinely at the other girl over her shoulder, watching as the braid was finished and tied. "But you know, you shan't throw me off track that easily. You'll have to tell me about this illness of yours.. If not now, then another day."

"Someday," she agreed, "Someday I'll tell you. Not at school, though." A certain factor of paranoia had filtered through to her over time. It was really quite discomfiting. She let Iselda's thick rope of hair filter through her fingers, then took her seat back at her desk. "So anyway. Did you learn anything new after growing?" I did.

"I got an iPod," she added, somewhat unnecessarily since it was sitting out obviously on her desk. It was black, and there was a small chip in the side. The silver cover on the back was so smudged by fingerprints that it was no longer reflective. Obviously, the music player was well-loved. "Only it was kinda a Christmas present."
