She breathed in the fresh, crisp, cold air, pondering on her future days. It had been a long time since, for the first time, her father had allowed her to leave their isolated home. She missed her friends--even that irritating unicorn Meshach--and wished she could see them again, or even make new friends. Windflame, her father, had disappeared for a short while--she knew he had gone for a walk, and he had yet to return. Perhaps he was out trying to lure in another mare. Shaking her head, knowing not even the kindest or purest mare out there, something like even her mother, would not be able to tame the bloodthirsty beast that was her father. She, herself, could not always contain her own "beast" though her mother's blood ran through her body, helping her to control it--in other words, her anger.

Then again, her own training with her father allowed her to be able to tame it as well. Windflame, himself, was a calm--albeit quite dark and intimidating--Kalona, but he was incredibly intelligent, and as such, he used her for his own personal gains. He was not evil, but nor was he good. He was, indeed, selfish and did things only for his own satisfaction... Blackfire shook her head, disliking where her thoughts were heading--her own destruction and demise. There needed to be someone out there to rescue her from this misery. Anyone. If she wasn't careful, she would be forced to mate with Kawaran, a half-kalona Windflame had taken in to train who had managed to get "permission" from her own father to mate with her. She was far from happy, but that didn't matter to Windflame.

She narrowed her eyes, and then relaxed. Now was not the time to dwell on such foreboding thoughts. She had her freedom for at least a little while, and she had until mid-evening, which was also a rarity. She didn't know why she still continued to allow her father to "control" her, but she feared if she wasn't around to at least calm her father, he would rampage and possibly search out those who knew of them, and kill them. She needed to stay to at least help him remain as sane as he could get! For now, she would wander across the Soquili Lands without so much as an interruption from her father, and happily she went, just enjoying her day, unsuspecting of making new friends, anticipating that perhaps she could run into her old friends.

He had missed the days of winter that did not have a single snow flake in the air. Oberon loved all weather, he loved life to be quite simple in description, but there was something quite lovely about a wintery day that did not have a snow flake in it. The ground would be covered but the air was at it's purest. So chilled and crisp that it almost hurt his lungs to breathe it in. He had gone out for the afternoon, planning to just relax for several hours before returning home to spend a bunch of time with his parents. They were a major part of his life, his mother so loving and happy and his father just as lovey-dovey but more exhuberant in his love for his mate and children. If that was really something possible... He grinned and breathed deeply again. Yes, today was most definately going to be an excellent day.

He had been zooming about minding his own business for quite awhile now when he realized that there was someone not that far up ahead. It was a she, man he'd been meeting way too many females as of late, with a black body and multi-colored hair that did what he had never seen in another's hair-style before. It was a long, long braid. She had even separated it so that blue hair was in one area and red in another. Cool! He noticed a streak of silver too but from where he was he could not tell what that was exactly. Maybe she was really elderly and her hair was going to turn all silver. Hahaha, he'd have to be nice and not laugh then. His hair would never turn silver and if it did he'd just rub blueberries all over it to make sure that nobody would be able to tell. Simple, right?

Divebombing the mare probably was not a very nice thing to do to her, but well, it was such a fun thing for him to do. Dropping himself until they were eye-level Oberon grinned and bowed in mid-air. He was in his smallest form, because it was so much easier to move like that. It did make it harder for him to stay warm though. On windy days he just stayed home and did not go out in the mess because he would not have the strength to control himself. "Well hello there... I'm Oberon, King of Fairies and friend to most all that I meet. Actually, friend to all that I have met and hopeful friend to all that I meet. What would a nice lady such as yourself be doing out in this? I'm enjoying the weather.. Perhaps you have planned to do the same thing as well?" Ahh yes, Obe was such a shy fellow.

The cold atmosphere was almost as relaxing as the summer's warm air, which was saying a lot as she preferred the summer days to any winter days. Tossing her hair, she glanced around the peaceful land, totally relaxed. She should have known better than to relax her guard; after all, if an unexpected stranger showed up, she wouldn't have time to protect herself if it was an enemy Kalona and attacked her! However, such thoughts were far from her mind, and her blue eyes almost reflected the white, snowy ground she trotted on. As she glanced up into the sky to see what hour it was, she saw the sun had moved to indicate mid-morning, and saw something coming towards her.

She smiled to herself when she noticed it was a pretty butterfly... floating... at eye level... who looked oddly like a horse... and then it spoke... What the hell!? Blackfire backed off, totally freaking out. This... this... this HORSE--no, STALLION--was friggin' tiny! What the... Who the...!? Clearing her throat to try and calm her sudden panic, she nodded to the little creature and bowed slightly. "Um... Hi," her voice was slightly high-pitched (higher than it was usually, anyway), making Blackfire wonder why she was allowing her panic to show when she should have an emotionless mask on her face. ...Fairies? They existed? She eyed the little stallion once more, and came to a conclusion. No wonder he was so pretty! Prettier than her, of course... and a fairy. Of course, of course; it all made perfect sense now!

...Who was she kidding? This was insane. Pure. Insanity. "Um... hello, King Oberon," she decided to start off as politely as possible. "I am called Blackfire, daughter of Windflame Bloodrider. It is a pleasure to meet you." What else to talk about? She was far too numb with shock by now that she was talking to a butterfly. No, scratch that. A fairy. A male fairy. A stallion fairy! She had thought stories of these tiny creatures were only legends and myths, and that only other Soquili besides herself knew of them--they had another name in the Soquili language, but the name had foregone her mind. She sighed to herself. Was her father's insanity finally getting to her? She hoped not! She was still young yet! "Your Majesty, what brings you out here on this cold, crisp morn?" Yes, that was a good start for conversation? ...She figured.

If he had known that she thought the cold was relaxing he probably would have burst into laughter. He loved the cool air but it certainly did not make him want to drop his guard. Then too if he was in his bigger size the wind would feel even better and none of his silly thoughts would matter. If the mare was going to want an apology for sneaking up on her.. well she would be better off wanting the ground to open up and swallow her whole because in his mind it was not a sneak attack. How could something that's pink and purple sneak up on anything or anybody? In the middle of winter which was, without fail white. His mind began to focus and his eyes focused right along with his thoughts.

His mind had come back to itself for him to be able to enjoy the sight of her about to lose it. Well, this mare obviously had no idea what a flutter was or she was so totally out of her mind she did not realize that he was indeed real. "Hi again." Wow, he had found a pretty little talkative one. Oberon was not a mean sort and he was actually grinning at her the whole time, hoping that she would calm down and perhaps come up with something more normal to talk about. She was looking really uncomfortable but at least he now knew that she was not old. No, her voice was definately not that of an old one. A bit strange, but again maybe that was just the panic he had seen wash over her features. He chuckled with a bit of laughter and then settled down to listen to what she would have to say next. Oh boy, this was indeed fun!

"oh no... that won't do at all. Don't you dare put the King in front of my name. That's just what the fairies do, but even they are a disrespectful lot." He chuckled but it was obvious that he did not mind the back-sass that he recieved. "Blackfire, huh? Were named solely because of your coal-black coat or do you have a fire inside that burns to be let loose or something else that's ridiculously romantic and utterly useless?" His laughter was quick and bright, mocking himself just as he could possibly be mocking her. "I'm just out to enjoy myself and to see if there are any fairies about. You know, they're awfully hard to find.. Other Flutter-Soquili don't pay them enough attention and I fear that they just sulk and do naughty things because they have been forgotten." All of this speech was delivered as if it was the most sensible thing to have been spoken. Very few ever thought that Oberon was crazy, and perhaps there really were fairies that only he could see?

What the... Romantic? How did he come up with that?! ...Oh right. She certainly didn't appear like her sire, so it made sense that he thought perhaps her parents were the type to be like that... wait. Her mother, Ringlet, would certainly have thought so, but her father was the one to name her, and so, there was nothing romantic or even utterly close the description he had just produced. She knew for a fact that her name was originally supposed to be what Windflame had hoped to be his son's name, and therefore it was supposed to be intimidating, but she supposed it was also a very feminine name as well.

"It's none of those, K--Oberon," she managed to correct herself. What the... he had quite a quirky personality. "My father named me, and he told me himself the name was supposed to a frightening name so... it was supposed to be intimidating rather than, well, anything nice like what you said." She was afraid to say "romantic" out loud, because she knew that there was no such thing like that was going to happen to her. She could only hope to wait, but it was futile, she knew. She didn't speak about her situation and her dark coat hid the many scars she had received over the years from her "training" with her father. Sometimes she was glad that she had such a dark coat to hide such ugly scars, other times she wasn't, as she was always on the lookout for the right stallion to come to her rescue.

She mentally shook her head. She sounded like a damsel in distress--which partially was true--but it wasn't like she couldn't fight for her own freedom! Well, actually, she couldn't; she was not physically strong enough to overpower her Kalona of a father. "Out to find other fairies? I've never seen any... are you sure they're not just shy?" she wondered aloud. His grin was infectious, however, and Oberon managed to make her give a small smile. His laughter was pretty cute, too! He was such a tiny thing, but perhaps that's what true fairies' sizes were. Ah, well. At least she now knew that fairies and pretty boys actually existed. She chuckled silently to herself at those thoughts. "Forgotten, huh? Well, I think it's more because they just don't show themselves enough! I don't really see any fairies around; you're the first you know."

So many people were seen as romantic in Oberon's eyes. They just had to be or else the world would not hold enough silly people to make him truly feel happy. To truly feel anything. If the world was full of kalonas and only a few happy folks he'd probably have offed himself a long time ago. It was wise that he kept his opinion of kalonas quiet though, since this mare would probably not take to it very kindly. He looked her over again, not in a pervy-oooh-a-pretty-little-girl way, but just in a way that would end a bit of the curiosity that he was feeling about her. She was so very different from his mother and sister. They were the two females that he knew the most about.

"Drat.. I was so hoping that I would be correct about where your name came from too many people these days are so dour and sad that well.. it makes me want to give up a little bit in believing that others can be as good as I imagine them to be. Intimidating? Now why on earth would a lovely girl want to intimidate someone? And I do not call you lovely in a belittling way... If you are one of those silly feminists that go about shouting that they are as good as boys I will burst into laughter." He knew he had to explain himself quickly or else get eaten up by an herbivore, "and before you go thinking that I'm some bigot creature that thinks males are superior I tell you you're wrong." He grinned and her and let out another laught, "I just simply do not care who is more superior.. Who wants to be better than someone else when they can be equals.. Which, by god.. are we not all equal?"

Most thought him a fool, a complete and utter do-do head. His family didn't, but that was what any family thought of their own children. Except for his dad's side of the family. He refused to talk about them except to say that his mother and father were good people, but weak in the head and inclined to dislike Dementia, his mother. That was all it had taken for him to not care left or right about meeting the lot of them. He got himself to focus again and decided to make himself more comfortable. With that he landed on Wildfire's back, near her rump but not inappropriately low. It would not do to have her craning her neck in a circle so she got a crick in it, but neither would he prance around on a lady's rump. Ladies usually didn't take to that sort of thing. "Never seen a fairy? My dear you will just have to stick close to me until you have seen one." A devilish light came into his eyes and he gave a mock eerie laugh, "They're positively impish!"

Her eyes danced with amusement at his comments about equality and all that interesting stuff that she'd never heard high or tail of. For the most part she was used to believing she was only a tool for her father to use as he pleased so this was an interesting thing to hear from such a small creature. She wondered if he could get bigger but doubted it later. He was probably one of those true fairies, so in that case he just couldn't get any bigger than he was. Ah, well. Laughing to herself, she watched as he fluttered over to rest on her back, and so she turned her head, curiosity in her eyes.

"Oh, sorry to put a damper on things, then!" she grinned at him. "I'm not a feminist--what is that, by the way?--and thank you for the compliment, K--Oberon, you're a cute and pretty little thing yourself. I don't think I'm lovely, per se, but pretty I suppose." She wondered what he was getting at before shrugging it off. He made it sound like it wasn't all that important and so she tossed it aside, not caring about it, either, if Oberon didn't truly care much about it. In the end, though, Oberon's cheerful personality was making her laugh and smile more than she ever truly had in her entire existence. It was a blessing she would treasure forever.

"In that case, want to, er, tell me the way to the fairies?" she asked, not sure if saying "lead the way" was the best thing to do, since he was on her back and not fluttering about in front of her. Since Oberon was king of the fairies they really just had to exist; after all, he was the first fairy she had met, and so there just had to be others, right? She laughed at his last comment. "Impish, huh? Does that include you, Your Majesty?" she meant to joke along with him but hopefully he didn't feel too insulted when she invoked his title.

Good lord! She actually believed him and wanted him to show the fairies to her, well... he'd just have to do that. For a moment his face went entirely blank and he tried to pool all of the information he had managed to gather up and then he began his speech, "Well.. Fairy-kind have been around for a very long time. I myself am just gifted by the fairies. Have you ever had a touch of light come to the corner of your eyes but by the time you turn back, it's gone? Well, that would a fairy and if you've had an encounter like that you'd best treasure it for the rest of your life for very few people are smart enough to realize what they see!" Taking a deep breath he continued on . .

"They are mischief makers and horribly wretched creatures, but I love them. For all of the naughty things they do, which is, a lot of them. They do something so terribly kind and pure that I can't lose faith in them. They might make you lose your favorite hair tie, but on the search to find it... you run into someone you've missed for a very long time that is also looking for a favored hair tie. If a coincidence comes up that is too weird, you best believe that a fairy has been the reason. They are about my size, with wings much more lovely than mine... and the body of a two-legger. I've only ever managed to see a couple of them though, as they truly rebel at the knowledge that I am their leader. In truth I just try to keep them safe from those that would snap them up as a snack or ensnare them for their power."

His tail was swishing lazily through his oration and Oberon stopped and grinned at her, hoping she had not lost all interest in what he was talking about. To tell the truth none other had questioned him as such and he was having such a good time. Although standing on her back had let his vision sharpen on the scars that seemed to be etched on her body like the dapples of his coat, "Oh yes, it most certainly does include me. I would die of boredom if I could not behave as badly as I always choose to." He fluttered off of her and with a rather loud POP was standing beside the mare, feet planted firmly on the ground. He stood at about 15 hands tall, he was actually overly-tall for a flutter but that was because his blood was only 3/4 flutter. His father was half and the exact same height as him.

She was in deep thought as she processed the information that he spoke of, trying to think back on things that might have been incidences of her running into fairies. She could think of none; probably because her father scared off cute little things like the fairies. However, because Blackfire was in such deep thought she did not notice how he had left her backside and now stood slightly taller than her; that is, of course, until she glanced up to wonder why a shadow had been cast over her.

She couldn't help herself; she gaped. "Y-You're...!" Shock reigned over her expression for a moment; he... wasn't he a true fairy? Then again, perhaps she had deluded herself, slightly. Of course, of course. She had merely tricked herself, and... just what was she thinking? She really just had to be going insane! Never in her life had she ever met a Soquili with the ability to change its size--again, Oberon was her first. It was amazing and at the same time somewhat frightening--if her father knew of this kind of thing, she worried for the other Soquili who had this ability--what if they got trapped and caught up in his schemes, if he was allowed to rampage?

She couldn't let that happen! She glanced up at Oberon, still in shock at the sight of him. "Er... Well, this is... yes, I'm quite surprised... ah... now I see why you say you're impish creatures..." she mumbled to herself, wondering why she thought fairies couldn't make themselves bigger. "You certainly had me going! Though, if you're still willing, I'm still curious to see if we will run into your fairy friends." She wanted to know what these miniature two-legged creatures looked like to make sure they never ran into her father. "Probably like you, K--Oberon," she kept tripping up on calling him formally, "a true mischief maker and thus why I didn't know they still existed." She smiled at him, trying to get used to seeing him the same size--er, slightly bigger--as her.

It was a sad idea that one like Blackfire had been raised in a household that was so hateful that not even a fairy would risk goinginto that area. In fact, it was so sad that the idea did not ocurr to Oberon. He just figured that she had had a carefree youth like his own or something like that and had not thought anything of the incidents where a fairy-sighting would have happened. Liking his decision on that part, Oberon waited with a deliciously naughty feeling for her to realize that he could change size. Most knew that flutters could, not too many had seen it happen.

"You seem to be just a bit surprised right now." He was more or less the same height at her, at least that's what it seemed like. Usually he thought he was the same height as other Soquilis and then they would shift and tower over him yet again. Of course, they were on a much more level playing field because he was only a bit shorter or the same height now. A flutter's purity would not allow it to be used for evil, or at least that was what Oberon believed about himself. Sure, there were probably evil sorts of his kind, but there were evil sorts of all kinds and that just was the way of life. Even if in his thinking that was just too sick to be true!

"I've been told on more than one occassion that I probably have more imp blood in me than fairy blood." A lot of rot that was, but he probably was just a bit mischievious because of the 1/4 of him that was regular instead of flutter. "I'll take you about to see what we can see, but I don't know if any of the fairies will reveal themselves. They know me too well in my small size, so we have a better chance if I'm larger." He began to prance forward, figuring that she would follow if she wanted to. His hoofsteps were high-stepping and joyful. They were going on a fairy-hunt! Well, hunt was not the correct word because he'd be rather disturbed if they found a fairy and one of them tried to kill or eat it. "C'mon Blackfire... We'll see what we can see! Oh the places we'll go! Oh the things that we shall see! It will be a truly marvelous day for us both, yes?"

Well, Oberon was certainly a hyper-happy-go-lucky stallion, that was for sure! She was used to the calm and quiet that she lived with for nearly all her life, not this... this... whatchamacallit hyperactiveness! It didn't really occur to Blackfire that perhaps something like this could also be accounted to as a peaceful, truly kind of happy atmosphere, but in the end, she only played along with him, half believing what Oberon said was true and the other half doubtful until she truly saw a fairy, so who knew? She was adverse to two-leggers, herself, seeing as she was hardly ever around one.

She grinned nervously at Oberon, still somewhat stunned to see him change sizes so suddenly. "Uh... just a bit, Oberon; I really wasn't expecting it, eheheh..." She felt like an air-head though she knew she wasn't. Just, this was her first time encountering a creature like this, and she knew she would never forget this odd yet exciting experience. Still, though, it was rather unnerving to see Oberon about her size--if slightly taller, since she had taken on her mother's qualities and was rather small for a Wind, but she was fierce, thanks to her father's blood--but on the other hand, she was starting to feel more comfortable, as well.

She had just gotten used to his tiny size when he managed to shock her once more--something no other Soquili had been able to do--but in any case... "Yes, let's go." She smiled at her new friend, who, despite being somewhat puzzling, was, indeed, incredibly fun. She had never had this much since playing with Meshach and Rowenya, her childhood friends. She also remembered meeting another stallion, but his name escaped her, as they had only met but once, and even then, briefly. She had an image of him in mind, though, so she figured as long as she remembered, it was okay. "I hope it's a marvelous day for us! It wouldn't be an interesting day otherwise."
PostPosted: Thu Jan 15, 2009 8:22 am

Hyper-active? Why the very idea of it made him snort with laughter. He was a cool, calm, and collected stallion down to the very tips of his toes. Okay, well hooves. He hooted with laughter not really thinking anything about her not having half a clue wha the was thinking and then began to move at a quicker pace. She was following him and he wanted to find some fairies. "Don't be discouraged darlin' if you don't see one today. I see maybe one a week and that's usually because they're trying to light my tail on fire. Not that they would want to light your tail on fire it's just a matter of fact that they don't like me ruling over them. I always attempt to stop their naughty behaviors, you see?"

Why had she not been expecting him to get bigger? His wings did get tired from time to time and having stronger legs would certainly be useful. He continued to ramble on, his voice happy and rather content. "Shifting back and forth is a lot easier in the springtime, in fact, there's a chance I will have to stay this size for the rest of winter. I rather hope not, but if that's the case then such is life. The pollen in springtime always makes me feel stronger and with so much of it about I just shift for the fun of it. As the year goes on it gets harder... Summer's not bad at all.. Fall is a bit difficult and winter.. Well, winter is overly diabolical." Most all of that was said without drawing in a breath. Poor Blackfire, really.

He nudged her with his neck, "A marvelous day? Why, is it not already a marvelous day? I think only once in my life have a lived through a day that would be anything less than marvelous. Yes indeed." He chuckled and thought of the day where everything had seemed to have gone wrong, "I would say the worst day I've ever had was not all the worst. In fact, it was probably only mildly-less-marvelous-than-a-marvelous-day." He winked at her and flit his wings a bit, lifting off the ground even as he legs continued to work as if only walking. "I spend most of my time walking so if I start to look funny in my walking it's because my legs are not as strong as they should be." All well, he preferred his wings most all of the time anyway.

She felt like Oberon knew her more than just the brief meeting they had, but she shrugged it off. Maybe her thoughts were just showing up in her expressions and Oberon seemed to be able to pinpoint her emotions very well... This, of course, didn't surprise her as much as it should, since she was feeling much more open than she usually was. She herself knew how to read emotions well, since her father always had literally no expression, but his eyes spoke well of his feelings. She glanced at him wide-eyed when he mentioned that the fairies tried to light his tail on fire. "Wah... are they so upset to have someone who wants to protect them?" she asked, not liking the idea of meeting fairies after all.

Okay, Blackfire knew she ought not to be this naive and... air-headed, but it wasn't like she had been out in the Soquili Lands all that often like other Soquili, so she wasn't sure if what Oberon spoke of was true, but if had to be, right? Since the stallion spoke as if there were other Soquili like him, which meant there truly had to be fairies... right? She wasn't just being strung along on a whim, was she? However much Blackfire tried to convince herself she was beginning to doubt, but found it was better to just go along with him. It was more fun that way, and besides, what if she didn't believe him and totally missed out on something different... and interesting?

She nearly flinched when he suddenly made contact with her, wondering why she hadn't flinched the first time when he was small and had perched on her back. Probably because at the time, she realized, she felt that he was more like a butterfly, and really didn't think on it. But now that she was bigger, she wasn't used to touch, so congratulated herself on not showing her nervousness of being touched. She didn't like to be touched, mainly because every time someone touched her she would have an instant memory flashback of seeing her father growling and snarling, eyes glistening with the punishment he had in mind for her, and she would always have to fight not to scare off the other Soquili in case they thought it twas rude or strange.

It suddenly occurred to her that in his smaller form, Oberon might have noticed her scars. This thought caused her to shy away slightly from the stallion. "Oh... um, of course it's a marvelous day, I made a new friend, after all," she agreed, hoping that he wouldn't notice her sudden shyness.
