I know that the term "bookworm" is used to describe someone who has an intense love for reading, but where does the term come from? Is there actually such a thing as a book worm?

Also, do any of you take offense to being called a bookworm (if you have been).

Well, here is the information I could find about "bookworms." If you go on to the site, they'll tell you all about the lovely pests that infiltrate our precious libraries. Nasty little buggers, they are.

As for being called a bookworm... no, I don't take any offense. It just means that I love reading, and there's no shame in that at all.

I love being called a bookworm. If I had to be reincarnated as an insect, it would be a bookworm. I'd love to curl up in a nice Shakespearean play. Quite literally.

I call myself a bookworm so no, I don't mind being called one at all.

Heh. Isn't it amazing how we can make things like that cute? I see worms used all the time in library promotional material for children.

And, no, I don't mind being called one.

Olivia: I know, right?
O.o
I wouldn't mind at all if I had a cute little worm donned in glasses and a bow tie sitting on one of my books, but if I found the actual larvae crawling and eating at the bindings, I'd probably scream.

rofl Agreed.

I seen a website awhile back that sold plush toys of those little critters. Was the link here or somewhere else? Oh, I cannot remember. I visit so many book forums that they kind of run together after time.

I'm glad I haven't seen one of those until just now on that site. But I have been eying the new shipment of used books I just got carefully, haha.

While I don't call myself a bookworm really, I don't really take offense to it, either.

The company also makes plushes of single-cell diseases. o.o

Too cute! That's the same company that made a bedbug I got for my child. (We used to always say, "Don't let the bedbugs bite!" at bedtime.)

Yeah, that's the one! It's kind of cute... in a weird sort of way. wink

You know, it is sorta cute. The others that they've made, I'm not too sure of. I mean, it's interesting to see a child hugging syphilis, but... D:

Anyhow, back on bookworms.
Does anyone play that word game on Pogo with the little bookworm? He's adorable. xD

Don't let the library burn! xd That's such a fun and addictive game.

That is a fun one--I especially like that it doesn't have a timer, so I can walk away. I love sending the smoldering letters to be eaten--the smoke coming out of the bookworm's mouth is cute as well.

I don't take offense to being called a bookworm...but after reading that article I just might.
D;

Usually bookworms here are green with glasses and a diploma or the hat thingy.
