I think it's the best system so far. You can make your characters anyway you want, with any attacks you desire. My favorite materia would be a combination of Master Summon Materia and Mime. smile

it may be a repeat materia thread, but this one will be the one that stays, all the others go away.

I liked it better than the "Learn magic skills from your equipment system," "Steal magic from enemies," or even the "Each character only gets one kind of magic, and what they learn is tied to what level they're on."
Sure, it was a little confusing the first time I had to equip materia, but after a while it all made sense and it was easy to juggle between characters.
My favorite? Enemy Skill. While only a few of the abilities are actually useful (Laser, Magic Hammer, Big Guard) it is still entertaining to cast Chocobuckle on Safer Sephiroth. ^-^

I think it is much better, and it makes it so that you can just use it rather than having to get a specific ability....in me opinion MUCH better *nods*

I think that the materia system for magic was the best of the "second generation ff's"(ffvii and up). FFIX would be the second favorite, with X close behind and VIII way in back.(I hate drawing xp )

I loved the materia system. My fav is mega all-death blow. 9999 on all enemys with no magic cost.

I loved Materia, especially al the awesome combos you could come up with. whee Like Added Effect + Contain. Bam! Petrification! Or Stop, or Confusion, depending. As far as favorite Materias go, I was fond of Enemy Skill (specifically, White Wind or Big Guard), Contain, and Deathblow. The Phoenix summon also has saved me many many times, though Leviathan will always be my favorite summon.

I liked it, but I definatly thing there could have been improvements.
What I didnt like about it, was that even though Everyone had their specialties, and different stats, it wasnt a big difference between them. This game was more cyber punk, so mages really didnt fit well in this story. This was meant to be the "everyday looking world with a little bit of fantasy".
Because there wasnt really any mages, cept for the poor excuse of Aeris to be a mage, every character didnt really excel in anything. Yea, cloud does the most physical damage, however i can easily change that.
I liked the combos, I liked taht you learned more magic through experience and that Materia was like a scroll so to speak...once you mastered a spell, you can try the next. Coolness...
I liked that it fit the storyline nicely...
But it was very easy to make a character over powered easily. disc one, just finished my battle with Lost Number in Shinra Mansion, and i've mastered a MPplus already, and aeris has over 1000mp. I'm not dying anytime soon, lol.
It was almost too simple, and not alot of individualisticness. Nothing was character specific. Some of the support Materia i think should have been Character Specific.
Something like...Sense, or Deathblow, or Steal, or Manipulate, i think should have been set to a character. I gave a sense to barrett, and RedXIII, Steal to Yuffie and Tifa, Manipulate and Enemy Skill to Cait Sith...
But thats one thign about this game...it was made so that you made each character what you wanted in your mind. To me, Cait Sith was the Redmage/bluemage/bst type... Aeris was my healer/black mage, Cloud was my Warrior/Black Mage or...dark Knight... Barrett, Yuffie, and Vincent were my gunners with support...
So the materia worked well...was it the best? No...was it the worst? No...
Honestly, I dont think SE has made the perfect magic system yet. 8 was subpar, 9 was too constrictive however it stayed to the RPG fantasy roots, 10 was too open ended and confusing, HOWEVER very underrated behind the theory behind it...it was used to make your characters balanced, and kudos for SE for thinking of it...11 is 1 character specific...so im not relaly a fan of it the same way as Im a fan of the others. Tactics and 10 would probally be closer to what i think is where the best ones are

I thought the materia system was very innovative, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Beccachin does make some good points about it's downfall though. It had it's ups and downs, I can honestly say that. But the idea of the system was very cool, rather than the typical magic system, and I wish more games would be inventive like this.

Pain in the ask me no more questions. It was very annoying trying to rearrange them all the time and making sure that the right people have the right stuff and it just drove me crazy.
