On the eve of her birthday, Princess Rosalind and her servant Talli run away. They stow away on a ship in the hopes of Rosalind escaping the demanding role of royalty.

However, their plan is thwarted when the ship they are on is captured by pirates. Rosalind turns out to be quite the shipmate, while Talli spends most of her time belowdecks or in the head. Rosalind dresses as a boy, not as royalty, and she could easily pass as a cabin boy.

Unfortunately, the king's advisor, Kerlin, sees right through the princess's trick. It's now up to Rosalind and Talli to save the throne from the scheming Kerlin - and their own lives from the untrustworthy pirates.

Princess Rosalind made herself more comfortable on the hay lining the wagon, which was rather difficult. Straw poked her from all directions, and she couldn't make much noise, as she was a runaway and was lying on her stomach beneath several empty burlap sacks. Her servant Talli, luckily, was within whispering distance.

The cart jolted to a halt and the driver, his wife, and two kids stepped out. This was their chance. As the scent of salt and the noise of waves lapping against the shore and boats reached Rosalind's nose and ears, she felt as though she could smeel freedom. "Now is the time!" she whispered to Talli, and the two pushed the sacks to the side, jumping out of the wagon and sprinting. They heard the man shouting, "Stowaway!" But it was too late for anything to happen the the princess and her servant.

Rosalind ducked her head so her hood could cover her face more efficiently. She ran up the dock to a ship called the Janice Lee, closely followed by Talli, and froze as a hand closed around her wrist. She spun to face whoever had her arm, and gazed in disbelief at the handsome boy who was surely about to call his master to take her away. But no such thing happened. Instead, he led her startled figure to an empty cabin and instructed Rosalind and Talli to stay there.

"My name is Jar, if you need anything. I'll be checking back regularly. There's a door in the back of this room that leads to a secret head. Use it whenever you need to. We get stowaways often, which is the whole reason we have this room," the boy said. "In about four hours will be supper. We should be far enough along by then, so you will be able to come out. Good luck."

And with that, Jar left the room, leaving Rosalind utterly bewildered.
