>>>Intro
Here is a quick and easy guide to many common roleplay and chatplay terms and abbreviations.

>>>A

-AFK: Away From Keyboard
This means someone has to leave the computer screen for a moment. This will most commonly happen in a chatplay or a fast paced roleplay.
Example: ((Hey guys, AFK...phone is ringing.))
Anytime you need to go AFK, make sure you tell your RP partners while OOC. (See OOC.)

-Applications
When you are joining a new RP, many GM's (See GM) will have you fill out a character application. More than likely, you will or will not be allowed to join the RP based on your application.
A basic RP app. consists of: your character's profile (See Profile),and a writing sample. Your application will most likely be judged on how literate you are, (See Literacy) and how well your character's compatability to the RP is.
Some RP's have character slots. These consist of you applying to be a certain established character.

-BBCode: Bulletin Board Code
BBCode is the coding style Gaia uses to "pretty up" posts. There are great many options...you can change size, color, alignment and font. Every RPer has their own text style.
For example, to make this style:

~Text Here}
You use this code:
[b]~[/b][color=blue]Text Here[/color][b]}[/b]

There are many colors available. Full list here.

-Bio
Your character's bio is essentially the same as a profile. (See Profile.)

-Canon Characters
When you start/join an RP set in a certain anime/manga/book/movie etc, you have two options. One, you can make your own character based off of that world call an OC (See OC.) Two, you can use a canon character. Canon characters are previously established/known characters from the anime/movie etc. you are playing.
For instance, if you were to join a Twilight RP, Edward, Bella and Jacob are examples of canon characters because they were invented by the original author.
There are also RP that use canons as NPCs. (See NPC.)

-Chatplay or CP
Chatplay is a specific form of roleplaying. It usually involves an unlimited amount of people, and is very fast paced. Literacy levels are usually the most lenient with CPs. Like RPing, The GM (See GM) of the CP will have made their own rules, including literacy guidelines. The most common type of CPs are battles, but you can CP just about anything. The major difference between chatplay and roleplay is the form in which it is written. Chatplays tend to be no different than if you were just chatting with your friends normally while online. The difference is, you are in character.
CPs normally require some differentiating between actions, thoughts and speech.
For example:

Quote:
*draws sword and faces the Nazgul, glowering*
Why didn't I kill this thing the last time I had the chance!
...This ends now!
*jumps at the enemy, unleashing a fierce growl*

The action here is indicated by *asterisks,* the thoughts are italicized, and the spoken words are bolded. Your own CP style may vary.

-Closed RP
This means that RP is either closed to the public, or the character slots are full. It should indicate wether or not an RP is open or closed in the title, or first post of the thread. You are banned from posting in a closed RP but many don't mind if you read along. It's good practice to observe different RP styles, but make sure you PM the owner for permission to observe. (It's just common courtesy.)

-Cybering
A cyber is a sexually explict form of roleplaying and is absolutely forbidden anywhere on Gaia. If you see anyone cybering, either here in the guild or in the gaia forums, notify a mod and report them immediately.

-Format
The post style you use when roleplaying/chatplaying is called your format. It can vary widely, but mainly consists of differentiating between actions, thoughts, speech, and OOC text. (See OOC.)
You can edit your format using BBcode. (See BBCode.)

>>>G

-Gary Stu
Masculine form of "Mary Sue." (See Mary Sue.)

-GM: Game Master
The game master is most often the creator of the roleplay. Their powers are pretty unlimited. (Not their characters, there is a difference. See God Modding.) Any major plot twists and sub-plots have to be run by the GM first. He/she also makes the rules and reviews the applicants. (See Applications.) Sometimes the GM is in charge of the NPCs. (See NPC.)
Occasionally, the GM will transfer their powers to another, most likely if they are going to be gone for an extended period of time.

-God Modding
God modding is highly frowned upon in RPs. It's when you make your character invincible. You dodge every attack and blast people 10,000,000 times, etc. You should be more realistic when roleplaying; (yes, even magical worlds have their limits.) If you can't count to that number in less than a minute, there's no way you can attack that many times in a few seconds, even with magic.
God modding also includes killing off character with out permission and manipulating others' characters. Just because you throw a knife, you shouldn't assume the other character was hit.

>>>I

-IC: In Character
This indicates you are transitioning from OOC (See OOC) back to being in character.

-Insta-kills
Similar to god modding, (See God Modding), insta-kills are exactly that. Killing someone instantly is very inconsiderate to your fellow RPers and is greatly frowned upon...even if you are killing your own character. If you want to leave an RP, contact your GM (See GM) about killing off your character.

-Literacy
The standards of literacy vary for each RP. Some will be stricter than others. The literacy standards for each RP will probably be mentioned on the first page with the rules.
Literacy can include, post length, whether or not extravaggant post styles are permitted, punctuation and grammar, language according to the era of the RP, and accceptable RP format. (See Format.)
Literacy is taken very seriously in most roleplays. If you don't take the time to recognize a roleplay's literacy standards, you won't be taken seriously as a roleplayer.

>>>M

-Mary Sue
Mary Sue is a term for a certain type of character. This character is an extension of the author's ego. That means it is a copy of everything of that the creator wanted. In roleplay terms, it is a powerful, 'perfect' character, a cliche. Many people consider a Mary Sue borderline god modding. (See God Modding.)
A Mary Sue is an ideal character. Strong, attractive, popular, and cool (without the slightest effort, I might add,) the Mary Sue (Gary Stu for male characters) is a huge pitfall; and, many believe, the result of an unimaginative RPer.
The characters often have a great number of skills. They don't have to be masters, but they have a lot, and they are great at most of them. In simple terms, the character is a Jack of all trades, but is as good as someone who specializes in that sole trade.
The Mary Sue is also, more often than not, highly beautiful. They appear to be heavenly, and are often exquisite in many different types of clothing. Their soul tends to be 'beautiful' (to the creator, which means it may not be innocent). That can make for a wicked personality. They suck up the other character's roles, hogging the plot to them. The roleplay dies because of it, and the Mary Sue brought everyone down with her.
If a Mary Sue is detected, you should tell the GM (See GM) of your RP your concerns.

-Mirror Literate
This title applies to one-on-one roleplayers only. It's a somewhat rare title, but it is occasionally used, so it's good to know the terminology. Mirror Literates simply roleplay with anyone of any level, and adjust their level in that certain roleplay to match their partner.

>>>N

-NPC: Non-playable Characters
An NPC is a character that isn't controlled by just one roleplayer. An example of such would be an innkeeper in a tavern or a guard at a gate. An NPC may be controlled strictly by the GM (See GM), or the GM may let anyone control them.
Some GMs allow the other roleplayers to create their own NPCs as well. Depending upon the rules of the RP, these NPCs may be soley under their creator's control or listed as NPC for anyone to use in the RP.
