Canaan sat, brow furrowed, at his desk, fingertips flicking across his tablet as he examined the menu for his current class and lesson. Interesting. While he wasn't too interested in science, persay, he was in love with technology and mechanics. He was extremely interested in getting to that part of the lesson.
Currently, he was waiting for his now frequent study partner, Micajah. It would be the first time they'd seen each other since the Solstice Party, where they'd had... Slight tension. Cane was still upset. The boy wore his traditional outfit. Tight wifebeater [grey], fitted jeanes [black], and a pair of flip-flops.

He stood at the door to the classroom, hands folded together in front of his stomach, and all Micajah could think as he peeked at the door was that he wasn't sure if he really wanted to go in or not. Sure he and Cane had somehow come to an agreement that Micajah would help him read and study since he seemed to be the only one who knew Cane's weak skills at it, and that made him happy of course, but it also filled him with a sense of dread.
He was trying to forget what Gideon had said to him earlier when he'd gone to visit the teacher about his odd chest pain, a mistake probably since it told him what he really didn't want to hear, but now that he was standing in front of the classroom door there was really no going back.
With a little hesitation the youth reached his hand for the doorknob and pushed it inward, opening the way into what was going to probably be a whole lot of awkward. He was dressed almost in his usual today; hair pulled back and pinned in place, a black turtleneck hugging his torso, with what looked like acid washed blue jeans on his legs. If it wasn't for the fact a butterfly fluttered near his head, over his left shoulder, the boy may have looked a little manly.
"Oh...so...sorry for being a little late. I was trying to get some paperwork in order."

"Not a problem." Cane's bright blue eyes had instantly snapped from his tablet to Micajah as he heard the door click open, and almost as quickly, locked onto the butterfly hovering nearby. "I see you've brought company." His teeth were bright against his tan skin as he smiled, gesturing to the seat beside him at the desk. "Come, Sit, Butterfly." It was unclear who he was addressing, this time.
The natives unwavering, sure gaze followed Micajah's path, and he kept his thoughts to himself. Not only had Mica said something more than a little rude to him at the party, he also hadn't helped him study that night. Perhaps they could make amends, today. "You left, for a time. I was told you journeyed home."

Micajah's cheeks burned for a moment at Cane's grin and calling of a nickname towards him, but he managed to just smile it all off and he came walking over, the actual butterfly hovering quickly behind him with it's colors changing as he moved. They went from the pretty blue at the entrance to a deep shade of red, and Micajah wondered if this butterfly was showing his emotions with its color.
God, he hoped not.
"Ah, yeah, I got a letter from my Father asking me to return for a small party that he was hosting. Family friends were going to be there and he wanted me to get to see them again since I didn't go anywhere last year."
He took a seat next to Cane, not sitting entirely too close, and for a moment he thought he was going to die when the butterfly floated away from him and made a small little dance towards Cane's face. Not good.
"How...how was your new year? Are you ready to ring in this year with more studying?"

"Indeed, I am. Who is your friend?" The tan boy held out a gentle finger to the butterfly, allowing it to settle on him as he ran his gaze over the other student. "Your Father?" A long pause, as he gauged Micajah's reaction. Their very first encounter, the blonde had said odd things about his father.
"I celebrate each season, so the new year is of no real import to me." Cane rolled his shoulders in a smooth shrug, careful to do no harm to the creature touching him. "Family friends, or your father's friends?" A slight raising of the eyebrow.

"Friend? Oh, you mean the butterfly. It's...sort of a familiar, of a kind. I named it Chon."
Mica felt a little stupid about telling him he named a butterfly that seemed to most certainly been a mood-sensor, as it was now moving from shades of bright red to a rosy purple, and he thought about swatting the blasted thing down and away. It wasn't doing him any good anyway.
"Each season, hm? I only celebrate when asked too, but I wonder if I should do something for my birthday this year. I was born on the spring equinox, much like Scyeth was for the winter."
He could have gone on into more detail about all that, but when talk turned to his Father he dropped silent and quickly moved the topic along. One person here already knew too much about him for comfort, and Micajah wasn't sure he wanted someone else to know as well.
"So what are we studying today? Was there something in particular you wanted to look at?"
The butterfly turned a darker shade of blue.

Mmmmn." Cane's eyes weren't on Micajah, they were on Chon, and he frowned slightly as the butterfly settled to a cool blue. His father, then. Shifting, the boy allowed his subject to change, reaching out to place a large, warm hand on the blonde's arm. "Your new uniform suits you." A smile that was a congratulations on Micajah's promotion.
He turned his blue eyes back to his tablet, pointing with a fingertip. "It's intro to science and tech. I need help with the science stuff, not the tech." In the time that they'd been studying together, Cane had slowly become more direct about his problems. It definitely helped.

"Thank you. I...tried really hard for this. Really hard."
He wouldn't mention how much it meant he was going against his Father, or how many times he had to study and restudy something because the fire claimed so much of his work, but with that simple phrase it seemed somewhat worth it for now. It was like someone was complimenting him for his hard work (other than a magic teacher) so it made him feel...good.
Micajah's arm stayed still under Cane's touch, and he took a glance at the butterfly to see that it was still blue. Good, good.
"So, science was it? What part in particular? The periodic table of elements, general studies about atoms or electricity? I'm pretty good with formulas since it's more memorization than anything else and that's something that comes pretty easy for me. Knowing your basic elements will come in hand when you need to move on to creating more complex formulas, though we could try and do something just generally more related to a field you're going more specifically in to."

Cane shook his head, slowly, gaze roaming over the other boy. "No, I understand theories, it is.... The writing is unfamiliar." Canaan had read technical manuals for mechanics for years. That was easy, understandable for him.
A brief squeeze on the blonde's forearm and he let go, voice quiet, non-judgmental as he flicked through menus. "You are a hard worker." A pause. "My father will not be requesting that I visit home." He wasn't saying Micajah's father was a good one, simply that he, too, had a remote father figure, that didn't care for him.
"Have you moved into your dorm, yet?"

Stick to the subject about the dorm. Stick to the dorm talk, stick to school talk. Stay away from yourself.
"No, not yet. I've been given a room but I need to move a few things that managed to survive the explosion and after fire. It'll take me a while to get things into place, but it'll finally be good to have another place to call my own. Just have to make sure Scyeth doesn't come in and blow it up again."
At the mention of Scyeth the butterfly turned a happy shade or orange-yellow, and it fluttered close to Micajah's face before settling itself down atop his head.
"But anyway, you need help with the way they write formulas? I can help you memorize what everything means so that way in the future you'll know without having to try and look for it."
Micajah was unsure of what Cane really wanted him to help with, but he didn't want to come right out and say that. It had taken a while for them to progress this far in their studies together and he didn't want a bad word or two to spoil it. Plus, Cane seemed like he may or may not have been in a bad mood - probably the result from the solstice party.

"Sure, we'll do that." Cane fell silent, running his finger uselessly around the tablet for a moment, before speaking quietly, bright blue eyes fearlessly locking onto Micajah's. "You seemed to avoid me at the party. Why?"
Obviously, it had bothered the young man.

"At the party? I don't think I was avoiding you, it was more or less like trying to not steal the spotlight from the birthday boy. I'm pretty sure you've figured out by now about how he acts when the limelight moves away. I was injured and it seemed in bad, bad taste to try anything."
Micajah answered without any hesitation, feeling rather honest about one of his reasons for not talking too much to Cane. He didn't want to say that he was feeling uncomfortable around him, and that he wanted to try and feel better without any added pressure.
"Plus you seemed to be talking to others, and making new friends. You and Wynn seemed to get along well, so that's important for your future here."
He thought he'd covered all his bases with that response.

Cane was silent and simply frowned at his tablet for a long time. After a moment, he seemed to get over his upset, and glanced over at Micajah. "I'll help you move." It wasn't really an offer, it seemed more a statement of fact.
Tapping the tablet, he let out a yawn, visably relaxing. "Tell me this science stuff, so I can move into the technology section. What is important here?" He began the audio loop of the lesson, planning on taking notes with Micajah.

"Eh? You really don't have to help me, I'm pretty sure I'll figure a way out to do it."
He was trying to be polite in his refusal but little did Micajah know that he was probably just wasting his time. He didn't put any more effort into a protest other than that, nodding his head and moving into talks about Science. He picked something that he thought might interest Cane - the study of light through lasers and their history, since he didn't know what else to try. They were here for science so talks about butterflies probably wouldn't been appropriate.
"Okay, well, we can talk about lasers for a little while since I don't know much else to say. They may come in handy in the future for you as a solider or whatever you decide to pursue, so. . ."
It was a stab in the dark, pardon the pun.
"The first laser was made in 1960, by a man named Theodore Maimen."
