Jua'Mwiba was getting used to the idea of 'stalking' as his mother had called it. Crouch low, cover your scent, sneak up on your prey. It involved careful planning, a great deal of skill and patience, endless patience which was a trait that Jua... did not possess. In the slightest really. He had tried the whole 'stalking' thing for about ten minutes before he realized it was completely pointless with nothing worthwhile in the end game. How did anyone have time to bother with it? Well... maybe when they were big enough to actually catch something. Everything right now was way too big... and as Jua had learned the hard way, they were a lot stronger than a small lion cub.

"This is awful..." He mumbled, before going on to mock his family under his breath, impersinating their voices to the best of his ability as he walked, "You should try 'stalking' Jua, it's great fun. Really, it will keep you busy for hours and out of your mother's fur while she does all the fun stuff.' 'Oh, Jua, why don't you try hunting while your father guards the boarder?' 'Oh Jua, you're too rough, we should do something else...' Bollocks."

Could everyone really be too busy to spend any time with him? All this was leaving him bored... he wanted to go out and do something, but no one would give the cub the time of day.

Karana'Mzaana was coming back from her moment of artistic incising, if you could call it that, for the time being. She had spent most of her morning carving again, reviewing, touching up, and she smiled. She was doing a rather nice job on it and she would love to show No and Kidondo, she had even record all of the new little lives that romped about the in firekin simo lands, of course, she carved them larger, for they will grow into fine firekin.

To be able to record the culture and history to tell the future generations about was so interesting and tempting, she couldn't wait for a time when she could bring another out there, show them their face, and if they had questions, tell them what they wished to know.

A dark figure caught eyes as she moved over the sand dunes, and a smile crossed her maw. One of the new additions to the pride as well as her slates, out in the sun, but all alone? Strange, however, if gave her a chance to meet another, especially one of the youngest of the pride, and she eagerly headed towards him, a smile on her face.

Jua was a little suprised when he saw the lioness coming near him. He wasn't used to getting the time of day when he did approach an adult. It was like stepping into a new... and frankly very bizar world for one of them to be coming to speak with him instead. It was... weird. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do when she came towards him. It was all he could do to sit down, tilt his head to the side and wait for her to get closer.

Who knew? Maybe she wasn't even going to talk to him. She could have just been walking in a direction that also happened to be where he was walking. But then, who knew? Maybe she really did want to talk to him about something. Maybe she was a cub-sitter... or maybe she was just as bored as he was. Maybe even adults had nothing to do from time to time? Or maybe he was sitting on her sand and just wanted him to move.

However it went, he sure wanted to know, "Hey wings." He said, a new nickname for her coming to his mind long before she had spoken a word to him. He didn't have it in him to call someone by their real name... most of the time anyway. Nicknames were more fun, and when they were based on appearance, easier to remember. But she was smiling... so he obviously hadn't made her mad already.

As she got nearer, she heard him speak and she couldn't help but let her smile grow wider as she came to a halt and sat herself before him, wrapping her tail around herself somewhat. "Wings am I? Shall you be bolt then?" she asked making reference to the markings on his face and back resembling bolts of lightning from the pitch black color of his coat, but in red, crimson red bolts like the beginning of a fire, "Or Phoenix then? You know, lightning, although its color can be white, yellow, or even ahve blue on it, is known as cold fire," she said with a nod.

Such a story she remembered hearing once, from where, she was not sure, but yes, cold fire as it was, "And see, when the cold fire, hits the sand, like this," she said moving her paw through the sand between them, "It creates such a beautiful thing, like a stone, but if dug up, like a frozen piece of the lightning, but not cold, and it would not melt in the sun."

She wondered then, if this 'Bolt,' enjoyed stories, or did not...

He grinned at the nickname 'bolt' and chuckled a little, "You can call me bolt if you like... my sister called me spike, one of my brothers called me stripes. Someone else called me thorn... I can't remember who." He just liked nicknames, though 'wings' was one of the first who had responded well to the one he had given her. Most were offended and told him to use their real name.

He sat forward almost instantly as she started to tell him the story. He would never admit it, ever if he could, but he loved stories... especially ones with... what had his mother called them? Poetry? His sister had made fun of him for his love of words that rhymed and went together nicely, since he was supposed to be a 'warrior'... but he just liked them.

"Really? That's neat." Jua said, though he had never seen lightning before, or thought that the sand could possibly be anything but... really boring. But who knew? "Are you a storyteller, wings? Or a..." What was it again? "Poet?"

Mzaa shook her head, "No, perhaps someday I might be, I'm a huntress, though this kind of puts a damper on catching large game all the time," she said making a motion to her leg that was still hurt, and one would be able to tell something was off the way it seemed bent in the wrong area. But she did as she was to do, and supplied as much as she could, "It makes hunting a bit more strategic for me, I have to plan it out to a tee, make sure I take into consideration what else might happen, though some days it hurts too much to go too far I'm afraid," she said honestly.

Perhaps being a story teller wouldn't be a bad option, she might have to consult Kidondo, or No even.

"Poetry is wonderful, as well as art, I carve, incise you'd call it, out that way on some slates, recording culture and history, you're there as well next to your siblings," she said with a smile. "You like poetry Bolt?"

Jua tilted his head and watched her limp. That was no good, especially for a firekin... but he supposed that injuries were bound to happen from time to time, and as long as she could hold it together, then it meant that she was still good. He liked to think that everyone had something to contribute, even if it was brains instead of brawn, "That's no fun..." He said thoughtfully, watching her leg, "I wouldn't want to be hurt and not be able to do stuff..." He'd rather die, actually.

"I er..." He didn't want to admit it... but maybe she knew more about it? His mom hadn't told him much, "Yeah... it sounds nice. Like when it rhymes or makes things sound neater than they are..." Jua tried to explain, hating how embaressing it seemed. But then, she had a limp. Liking poetry didn't seem so bad beside that.

"I like it when... well, my mother told me a poem once. But it's the only one I've heard." He explained, sighing, "So I tried to make up my own but... I wasn't very good at it. And a poet shouldn't be a warrior." He said, standing his ground on that one... though he did seem a little unsure.

"No fun, but then again, its perhaps a scar I shall always remember as it happened during the rebellion," she said with a nod. "It may hurt, but its also a reminder of that day, I do not regret it from happening, though I do hope it to get better, it has, though it aches from time to time, but this is my home regardless, and I do what I must, and I try harder. Strength of mind creates strength in body to overcome any challenge presented to you day by day," she nodded.

"yes, a poem or song can be nice, though rhyming can be difficult depending on the genre you want" she smiled. Though she quirked a brow at his comment.

"A poet can be a warrior, and a warrior can be a poet, there is no boundary there," she said matter of factly. "Do forgive me if I oppose any of your family's feelings, but you can be both if you wished. Poetry, if it suits you, and makes you happy, should make your family happy as well." she flicked her tail, and watched him. "Say, if a warrior was in a battle, and wishes for future generations to remember his name, what he had done, he'd make a poem, which is turn could become a song and story passed down, it is nothing to be ashamed of Bolt."

"Huh..." Jua said, tilting his head to the side, "No. I don't think I'd be able to do it, even if I did have a stronger mind for it. Not being able to fight and stand up for yourself would suck..." He said with a small sigh, "I'm happy for you at least, wings, but I'd need something more than just a memory. Going out in a fight is the only way to ever go out."

And while he disagreed her on that point... what she said about poetry made him edge forward with even more interest than he had before, "Really? Do you um... know any other poems? Because I want to know more... but I don't think my mom knows any other ones, and my dad doesn't know any... and poems about warriors are cool but I want to hear some..." He paused, "Erm... well... I mean, there would have to be a warrior in there somewhere but..."

How to explain it? Really? Poetry about warrios would be cool... but the poem his mother had told him had been about love. And Jua's tendancy for being a helpless romantic far outclassed his love of poetry in terms of things he really, really didn't want to admit to.

Mzaa laughed softly and shook her head again, "This ailment does not keep me from fighting, an opponent may think I am weak for the limp I carry, though that is there mistake," she said with a wink. Flicking her tail she thought in her mind, poetry, warrior poetry, she let her mind flow and try to remember something, anything, though words here and there came, nothing of a apst poem came to mind, though she perhaps figured a poem from her own tongue would do just as well.

"You came in the night and took me away
Saved me as rain fell as the day
Wore on and I felt close up and alone
My my heart and soul are my own
Cast in blood
Paws coated in mud
Our paws beat like the war drums
They beat like the war drums.

Your voice and name I'd always know
As days would where on wherever we would go
And our paws would beat like the wars drums
They beat like the wars drums..."

while she spoke it a tune was in her voice, and she smiled, wondered if he liked it.

During the poem, Jua edged up, literally so close that he was nearly touching Mzaa by the time she was done reciting her poem. The words were like magic for the cun, he could barely resist it. And the best part was that it had something to do with warriors, and with love, both at the same time.

"That's awesome." Was all he could mumble out when she was finished, "I wish I could think of something like that..." And he did wish that. Because everything he came up sounded completely useless.

"Thank you," she said with a smile, she had noticed now how close he had gotten to her, and she leaned her head forward to touch her nose to his, "You can do that too, it just takes time, practice, dreams...experience, everything. In time, you can think of things on your paws, without even knowing what you say they can rhyme or even not rhyme and still become poetry."

She smiled and moved herself a bit, moving her leg so that it wouldn't cramp or ache, "Everything takes practice, even hunting, starting as small as pouncing, moving from there, though even the small things may not be as fun, what comes to be of the small things is so much more grand," it was true, though you may start with a pounce or a word, you end with hunting in perfection or saying poems whenever you wanted letting them roll off your tongue.

"You are allowed to enjoy what you want, what makes you happy is just that, it makes you happy, don't let anyone tell you different," she said nodding.

Jua didn't move when her nose touched is, he just kept himself at rapt attention, doing his best to take in her every suggestion when it came to poetry. Because this was the best stuff he had to work with, and this lioness was far more passionate about it than his mother had been. That had been what he would have called... barely interested. And no one had any intention of teaching him any more, especially since he was supposed to be a solider.

"Right... practice..." Which he really wished wasn't so damn boring. He would have loved to jump right in a fight and learn in the heat of battle however he could. It was more likely to get him killed than anything else... but he simply couldn't resist the temptation of jumping in. Of brawling until he couldn't breathe. That would be the way to go down.

Buuut... maybe he could swing actually practicing with the whole poetry thing. That he would have to do, it wasn't like he would learn anything by just spouting out horrible noises all the time, "Could you teach me? I mean... not tell anyone, but just tell me some poems and tell me about how to do it."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 11, 2009 9:16 pm

Mzaa nodded, "Of course," where to start though? Poetry, art, it was nothing easy to teach, but she could try, or at least, give him somewhere to start. "With poetry, its hard tot each adn learn as if mimicking a move taught by a guard or soldier, like I said, it comes with learning other things as well, with what inspires you. If fights, battle, the stories of warriors past, interest you, you can start there...

Then, pick something specific, say, a certain warrior, or a warrior in general, male, female, try to picture him or her in your mind, put details, colors, markings, imagine it, as if your imagination was real.

Rhyming can be hard, but you don't necessarily have to rhyme exactly, like by and sky, me or see, you can rhyme internal sounds, like along and mom," she said drawing out teh syllables and pronunciation.

"Its only a start for you, but I think you'll do well with it if you put your heart into it, Bolt," she said smiling, yes, he'd do just fine.

Jua nodded, hanging on her every word and agreeing on everything she said. He really didn't know any different, so he couldn't argue with her on any point either. But what she had said... he was born just after a war, surely he could think of plenty of warriors and generals who would work nicely for a warrior poem. But for a love poem... he supposed that he really needed to be in love for that one to work.

"That's a good start." He agreed, "And Wings... if you want to know my real name, I'm Jua'Mwiba. But you can still call me Bolt if you like." He said, nodding along with everything that she had told him.

He still couldn't believe that he had gotten her to pay him any mind... what luck that he would find himself the possibly-only-other-firekin out there that actually liked poetry. "But yeah... that's a good start. I think I can be a little clever..."
