Ghosts, are they real? Explain if you think ghosts are real or not.

Have you had any encounters with them?
PostPosted: Thu Jan 08, 2009 1:58 pm

Again, I should probably come back to this later, but I have had encounters with what I've believed to be ghosts.

I also belive in ghosts... my mom and her friends tell me all the time about things they have happened to them...

I was at my friend hopes house and me, her two friends, my step sister and hope were runing around ( we were hyper... way to much coke... ). her friend ran outside and the door locked in the sun room ( theres a tiny gap between the floor and the door ) we then saw a hand clawing under the door and I thought it was her so I looked at it and was like " Hey, did you get locked out? " thats when I saw her walk in from outside( if you go off the sun porch and around the pool theres alittle path that leads to another door on the side of the house) from the side door and look at me and ask " What?? " then I looked down with hope and saw the hand again...
thats when we screamed and looked at each other and looked back down... it was gone... creeeppyyyy
me and hope were harrassed by those ghosts so many times... I could be here all day telling you stories... I just think the hand was so freaky!

Do I believe in ghosts? Yes, I do. Some of them are actually quite harmless while others want to be some of the malicious things that you've ever encountered. I actually have a couple of different things that give my evidence to it.

When I was living in the little town of Mansfield, Arkansas (population of just over 1,000), I was living in a trailer park with a couple of my coworkers from Walmart. Well, lo and behold, when I would sleep on the futon after I first got there, it was only a matter of time before it would suddenly start to shake. Was it the wind? No, it wasn't. The wind very rarely blew hard enough to shake the trailer, and when it did shake the trailer, it didn't cause everything to shudder very quickly as if someone were holding on to one side and wiggling it. It would do that for a good five or ten minutes before it would stop, then it would usually start back up after about fifteen or twenty minutes. My roommates also attested to that particular ghost- who just seemed to like pestering people- would also walk up to their bedroom door and hit it once every few seconds until they yelled at it. There was another one that stayed in that trailer that just stood in the corner of the kitchen by the sink and microwave- and it never moved. It just stood there, looking at the corner or out the window. Though I couldn't personally see either of them, I passed through them enough times to know what direction they were facing in when I walked through them.

The other bit that I have is much more recent than that last bit.

The apartment that I'm staying in used to be one house some years ago before it was turned into a duplex- the basement and first floor is one apartment, and the second floor and attic is the second. Though I can't say anything about the lower apartment, as I live upstairs, we have a ghost that lives here that we don't really care for- mostly because it doesn't like us. We believe that he's (and yes, my sister and I know it's a guy) an older German, possibly a Great War veteran. He generally stays upstairs, though he does like to come down at night when he can get through. He's yelled at one of our ex-roommates in German through his headphones, he's peered through the ceiling at me, walked up the back stairs and made us think that someone was coming up, and in general messed with our heads. We don't like opening the door to the attic at night because of him; he is so full of such an intense anger that it practically floods the apartment when we do open it after dark. Even some of my friends have felt it when I made the mistake of doing so once- and they were fifteen feet away from the door when it happened. We don't know why he's so pissed off all the time, but we suspect that it's because he was one of the original residents and is now quite angry that someone else is living in his home.

GOD I hate ghosts! the nice ones, nice or not are still scary! ): I hate when they watch you...

we ended up sleeping in her moms room...
as much as I hate ghosts I miss her house, it was pretty... I am going to visit and ask if they'd had trouble with the ghost..
( hope had seen a little girl and a man so I dont know .-. I just go there dont know anything to deep about it )

When I was four or five years old, I wandered into the kitchen one weekend morning because I heard water running. I thought my mum was probably up and making breakfast, but when I entered the kitchen, I saw a woman with long hair crying as she washed the dishes. She was gone in an instant and no one ever saw her again.

My senior year of high school, I was invited to a Halloween party by a girl in my English class. Her house was way out in the middle of nowhere, and everyone knew the area where she lived used to be sacred Native American ground. Despite this, they foolishly decided to play with a Ouija board. Josh and I went outside with a few other people who didn't want to be near it.

That night and for about a week after, I saw everyone I knew with his eyes gauged out, with the exception of Josh, my Japanese teacher, and our Japanese exchange student. My only assumption for their intactness is that they were either Buddhist, as is the case with my teacher and student, or agnostic, as is the case with Josh.

One of my friends who practiced with Ouija boards and the like used it at my house and claimed that the "Lion" as he was called was gone. She used it to talk to a small boy who had starved to death, and he said that he wouldn't have come out if that spirit was still around. To this day, we don't know what he was, but I imagine he was some angry spirit or demon.

Also, my alarm clock back home used to always go off at 3AM. No matter what I did, it always sounded for a minute, even if I turned it off or unplugged it. After a few days of this, I left it unplugged, and it still happened. There were no batteries in it, and it happened nearly every day for a year.

I feel that it merits mention that I left, not out of discomfort but disappointment. I was unfamiliar with how a Ouija board user looked and was more accustomed to the child's sleep-over method than the fast, direct, jerky movements used by the girl who was in front of it. Rather than continue what seemed to me, an ill-executed farce.

By even presenting this theory, you are acknowledging the religion of the presenter, in this case Catholicism. Believing in this theory of his is no different than believing that a crucifix will protect you from ghosts.
In any case, Sara, speaking from within the rules of most occultists, I would have to say that it sounds more like a demon than a ghost. Of course for me this is purely hypothetical and academic.

Tammy, I'm sure that you think intentionally misspelling words like "is" is terribly cute, but this is a serious conversation about intellectual and philosophical concepts. I request that you either take it more seriously (which generally discourages not only misspellings, but also one-sentence answers) or perhaps to not participate in these particular types of discussions.

As for me, I cannot say, with certainty that I have ever had any sort of ghostly encounter. The closest thing that comes to mind is a time when, at the very heights of suggestibility, when conducting a sort of investigation of my own, I thought I heard a voice in the living room say "Dad...Dad" where my father was sleeping in the next room. At the time I believe that the TV was off. If not then the volume, voice, and clarity were all wrong. In any case it was not the television. It sounded a bit like my brother, but it seemed far, far too close and I was certain that he was asleep and I would have heard him come down.
In fact, it was probably nothing. The house was new and we were it's first occupants. I don't believe that anyone died during construction, either, least of all any children.

As for believing in ghosts, I can't say that I do, having had no strong encounter of my own. Psychic activity is a different matter, however, as I have strong reason to believe in it (I don't mean to be mysterious; see my most recent post in the philosophy section for more on that particular matter). While the type and scope of psychic activity is nothing like it is in the movies, I have seen evidence of psychicly exerted pressure (to extremely light degrees) in person, before my very eyes. It was severely light, with presure that would be insufficient to lift a feather. Seeing as psychic phenomenon and ghostly activity are related, however, it gives me hope that ghosts may exist.
I hope that they exist because it provides hope that there may indeed be an afterlife, providing an escape from the oblivion that is likely to otherwise await beyond the grave.
Of course it is possible that ghosts could exist without there being an afterlife. Perhaps ghostly persistence is the only escape from oblivion. Conversely, perhaps the consciousness has already been granted oblivion and the activity is produced by a sort of psychic imprint or non-sentient by-product.

3' o clock is known as the most active time for spirits. lots of people thought it was 12 but nope for some reson its 3 AM...
I think that may be why it would go off at 3 ^_^;

Whell. I don't know if I believe in ghosts. There is something. Demons, spirits, angels, ghosts.. I dunno. But something is around.

When we lived in Archie, we lived in a huge old house. We heard s**t all the time. Everyone did. One night, me and Matt were watching t.v. The cat started looking all weird, like scared. She was staring at our steps. We heard something, so we paused the t.v. We heard loud noises upstairs, like someone stomping. But the only other people there were his parents who were asleep downstairs.

Another night in Archie loud sounds woke up Barb. Sonny woke up too. Barb said something about how loud we were being and told Sonny she was gonna go tell us to quiet down. He heard the noises too.. but told Barb not to worry about telling us to be quiet.. we were at work.

My sister lives in an old house as well. Before she was born, we lived there. I had to sleep in a doll room. It was the scariest f%$*ing thing in my life. I hated those dolls. And I would hear hit constantly. One night my cousin had stayed with us. She swears she saw a girl walking down the hallway, with blond curly hair. My sister has hair like that, but she wasn't born yet.

My sister is ten now, past the point of imaginary things. She doesn't believe in Santa or any of that. But one day Kathy heard her talking in her room. She went in to find Darrien in the closet. She claims a man was in there with her. Weeks later Kathy had out a photo album, and there was a picture of my great grandpa. Darrien pointed to it. She asked her why she didn't believe her about the guy when she had a picture of him. She was actually irritated. Like, "Are you crazy? Saying I made that guy up when you have a picture of him?" But of course my great grandpa is dead.

Kathy send my sister to a therapist for that. I honestly think that's wrong of her. My sister has a bad enough time as it is..

But I believe in something.. I haven't seen a ghost but I know what I've heard with my own ears. And I know my cat wasn't crazy either.

I use to love them till that stupid house scared me to death ) they were pointed at the closet and I saw there little lips moving... I screamed and my mom had to come in and take them to her room... me and my step sister use to hear whispers and scratching in the closet.... I dont know what was in there... but I dont want to find out...
sometimes I heard giggling and people running in the hall way... Id get up to check ( at the time me and my brother were close so I figured it was him ) but when I got into the hall way to see no one was there I paniced and ran back to my room

I agree with you there. Dolls, especially porcelain and those Japanese ball-joint dolls, are really creepy.

Oh, it was horrible. My Great aunt is rich as hell.. and since she had no kids living at home she not only had the money but the extra room for a doll room.. it almost makes me sick knowing that someone could be rich enough (and wasteful enough) to use an entire room just for dolls. They were EVERYWHERE. She actually had to take dolls out of the room just so I could sleep in the bed. They were on shelves, chairs, the windowsills.. I almost think it was my first clue she was insane.

But when light poured in at night, like if a car went by.. some of the doll eyes would appear red. It makes me scared just thinking about it.

I do not keep dolls around- and the incidents that you have described, Spenelli, are why. It's not because I'm scared that they could happen. It's because I know that they do. While I admit to having one doll, it is for good reason, and it is a harmless porcelain doll that my grandma got for me when I was born. Sadly, she has since passed away- I believe it was 2000 that she died- but she was sweet.

I also utterly refuse to mess around with Ouija boards, as there are too many negative things that can come about from the use of them. The peculiar eye-gauging incident that Sara described is a minor, but creepy nevertheless. I'm sure that some of you have heard the horror stories of spirits killing people from the use of Ouija boards; while it's not quite true, an inexperienced practitioner can very easily open themselves up to the wrong spirit that can ruin their lives in any number of ways, and insanity is no small risk in such cases.

As it is, I find myself occasionally combating an angry spirit that lives in my house; I don't need any external stimuli aside from that to deal with right now, too. Perhaps sometime in the near future, I will bring myself around to discussing what I practice, but that is another discussion for another time- and one that, unfortunately, I have neither the motivation nor the time to begin, as I have work in an hour.

It would very much enrich the philosophy sub-forum for you to share what you have to say, there.
