She was staring rather rudely at him, she knew. But honestly, she was too far gone to really care; this was love. True, forever-and-a-day love to boot.

He was beautiful. His face, his body, the way he moved; gorgeous, wonderful, all of it. Maddy sighed. It was too bad that he wasn't her's, wasn't it?

She threw a disparaging look at the price tag on the aquarium that housed her little love, a half-grown turtle wobbling around in the sand with his siblings.

Maybe coming to the pet store hadn't been such a bright idea after all, but she'd just gotten her allowance from her mom and she'd only been going to get some toys, anyway, before this little bugger caught her eye. As it was, her allowance didn't quite make it to buying a baby turtle, and she was stuck here, with her nose pressed to the glass and the occasional sigh.

Melchy hadn't intended to slip into the little pet store when he set out on his mission for the day. In fact, he hadn't even planned to be on the same side of the street as the pet store. His original plan had been simply to go down to the shopping district, browse the nearby record store to see if there was anything halfway decent he could get for cheap, and then buy some candy before heading home. It had been a good plan, and had been completely derailed by a single glimpse of butterfly wings in the window of the pet store.

Those wings were uncannily familiar, and Melchy's attention span, limited though it was, had completely re-centered itself at the first glimpse of them, and now here he was, jaywalking through traffic during a green light, on his way to see if the owner of them was who he thought it was. Slipping into the petstore as inconspicuously as possible, he reached up to still the jangling bell on the door and sidled nonchalantly down until he was in the same aisle as her. Another look at her confirmed it: he had met this girl before. Focusing on the tanks in front of him, he sidled more toward her before springing his attack.

"Hey, I know you, aye?"

"Mm, dunno." If she hadn't been so caught up in the green wonder before her, Maddy would've surely had a heart attack by now, but as it was her interest didn't even wane.

Splaying a hand on the glass, she replied properly without even glancing towards the supposed not-stranger: "You don't sound all that familiar, though."

Though there was, in the back of her mind, that one little pinprick of something that insisted she knew this voice. She paid it no mind.

"Dunno," Melchy responded, shaking his head slowly and investigating the turtles this other girl seemed to be completely engrossed in. "Wanna say I've seen ya b'fore. Don' think I'da forgot those wings, an' I'm pretty sure I ain' making up them bein' familiar. Not all that many wings like that. Leas' not on people." Nodding sagely, he moved in closer to her, though not close enough for it to be uncomfortable, so he get a better look at the turtles. He wasn't all that big on reptiles, though snakes were pretty neat, and the turtle bored him after a minute or so.

"Y'gettin' one, then?" he asked when his attention had wandered back to Maddy again.

"No, I don't think so." She sighed defeatedly before glancing up at her companion for the first time.

"You do seem kind of fami--" Her eyes widened drastically. "Oh! You're that kid from last summer, right? We played, uhh.." She thought for a moment; "Volleyball or something, yeah?"

As far as she remembered, he'd spent most of the time staring at Squishy, and she hadn't actually thought he'd noticed her; which was fine, as he was damn scary at the time and not someone whose attention she thought she'd have enjoyed.

What was it with girls and going to petstores and looking at animals they weren't going to buy? Either go an' get one, or don't go, but don't pine over it! Melchy, being slightly more tactful than most pirates (courtesy of being smacked for discourtesy), kept his mouth shut but let the thoughts buzz away nonetheless.

When Maddy finally remembered him, he remebered where he had met her. "Yeah, volleyball," he answered, nodding coolly and casually as if he had known the whole time. "Don' remember yer name, though, sorry." Shrugging, he straightened up and stood on tiptoes to inspect an aquarium on the shelf above the one holding the turtles.

"That's alright, I don't remember yours either." She shrugged back at him, before smiling vaguely. "Time for a refresher, I guess?"

"S'pose so," he answered, scratching the back of his neck and then giving a short, courteous bow. "Th'name's Melchizedek Chandler, Melchy, f'rshort. At yer service, milady."

She giggled lightly and gave him a low curtsey in return. "Why thank you, Sir Melchy!"

"You know, you talk sort of odd." She eyed him curiously, before blushing at the rather impolite question: "I mean, well.. Uhh.."

The blush surprised Melchy more than the comment. Personally, he didn't see anything wrong with his manner of speech. If anything, it was others' whose speech just seemed off to him. But the Cap'n had explained once to him that you talk how you were raised, which explained why she didn't sound like the rest of the crew, while Melchy did. He shrugged and waved a hand in an attempt to dispell Maddy's discomfort.

"No problem," he said breezily, "I unnerstan'. Ever'one sounds different, an' this is just how th'people I spend th'most time around sound." He shrugged again. "Cap'n calls it an accent. Sometimes." He paused thoughtfully. "Th'rest of th'time, she calls it 'the bastardization of the English language.' Pardonin' my language," he said, suddenly realizing that the word 'b*****d,' like a great number of other words he had learned from the crew, were on the list of 'things never to say to other people (unless you were very angry)' that Katrina had drilled into his head.

She clamped her hand over her mouth, trying to smother the giggles that were desperately trying to escape her. "That's okay!"

"I know this guy who sounds a bit like you, you know. He's a pirate." She confided, smiling lopsidedly and leaning a bit towards him, fully looking like she was telling him a secret.

Melchy put his hands on his hips indignantly as Maddy laughed at him. She was laughing at him! At him. Laughing! He was, frankly, insulted, but he assumed it was more at the fact that he had just sworn than at the way he talked. At least....he hoped it was. If it wasn't, he was gonna look like a damn a**. But then Maddy told him something that was...apparently...a secret...and he blinked. Pirates? There were more? He didn't like that. Katrina and her crew and then Alex were the only pirates he knew of, and he was pretty sure neither of them were going to like the knowledge that there were more on their turf. "Oh, really?" he said conversationally, running a hand through his hair and raising an eyebrow.

She nodded: "Yeah, or at least he seems to think so. His cousin too. And their friend. And they mentioned some other people, too." She shrugged, not remembering the particular conversation as well as she would have liked. She´d gotten stuck on 'pirates' and never quite moved with the rest of it.

"They were scary enough though, that's for sure!" Maddy continued vehemently, not considering that her and Melchy's ideas of 'scary' were probably a bit different.

Melchy couldn't help the little frown that stole over his face as Maddy mentioned other pirates. He didn't like the idea of others moving in on his turf. It was his, after all! But...well, whatever. He cocked his head when she called them scary, though. "Scared ya, eh?" he asked, tossing his head arrogantly. "A pity," he said loftily, "when people fail to act as gentlemen."

"What, so says the cursing wonder?" She teased him gently. "Turned out they weren't so bad after all, so I guess it was just me being silly." That'd taught her a lesson on first impressions, at least.
