"Long ago, before man came to this land, Gargoyles ruled over all. They lived in peace, thriving by nature's blessing. It was not until man came that our world started to crumble.
In the beginning our co-existence was manageable, at times even enjoyable. The humans were primitive then. Their fear of us kept them far enough away that they could do no harm. But they grew in numbers and intellect, and finally they came with iron weapons to kill us in our sleep. We could no longer sleep and hunt where we wanted. We were fugitives in our own land. Some wanted to strike back against the humans. Some wanted to try to live in harmony. But, for the time being that was impossible. Until I met him.
He was just a boy when I found him wandering lost in the woods. He had strayed from his father's hunting party and lost his way. I fed him, sheltered him, and the next night took him home. The Lord's son was a good man, this I could tell. As he grew older he visited more and more. Eventually, when he took his father's reign over the land, he moved his castle and town closer to our cliffs. Many rejoiced, for a law was created by the good ruler. No man shall do a gargoyle harm, and vice versa. Though he gave his word, some did not trust him. They fled deep into the mountains, never to be seen by the clan again.
But the rest of us stayed.
Years went by, and the Lord was good to his word. The humans still feared us, but we lived together in what might be peace. My clan was troubled by his death, wondering if his son would continue with his laws. He did. Lord MacGregor, though he did not share the same passion his father had, is also a good ruler.
Unfortunately, our existence was threatened by something much more troubling. Our numbers had dwindled to only a handful. We were on the brink of extinction, with no hope in sight. So I went deep into the mountains to seek help. My ancestor's ancestor's told tales of a being that lurked deep in the caverns, possession incredible magical strength. What I found there is a tale I hold to myself. The burden of the journey, and the price of the gift is too much to tell.
I returned some time after with the pearl. I placed it within the springs atop our cliffs, and from then on our waters were blessed. Now we give birth more frequently, and our numbers have slowly climbed. However... the blessing seems to make us age more rapidly as well. It is the pearl's price, though my clan agreed that it is a worthwhile sacrifice.
I pray that a day will come that we will no longer have to rely on the pearl's gift. For now, I watch over the good Lord's children, and their children... along with the clan I have done so much to see thrive. "
