Tsuki had spent her morning running across a frozen landscape. Her muscles ached as she twisted and moved, and her hooves slid at moments from the ice that surrounded her. It wasn't the best conditions for running but Tsuki refused to ignore her morning exercises. Since birth she had trained every single day of her life, just as her father had taught her. It was a strange cycle, but she'd never lived any other way.

When she had completed over seven laps of the area she decided to give it a rest and return to walking. Although she was gasping for air, her lungs refused to take in the frozen mist that lingered around her. For many moments she slowed herself and decided to breathe through her nose silently. Her father had taught her this kind of breathing exercise before and she was thankful to use it. He explained to her how horrible the winter air was when training, so luckily she was knowledgeable on how to control herself.

Once she was back and in order she allowed for her eyes to survey the area once again. As usual, everything was quiet and almost silent. There was little movement and little air along the grass. The winter season was exceptionally quiet compared to other seasons, and Tsuki found the days to be even more lonely then usual. So with a sigh, she decided to keep on walking, and find a different area to wander around.

Jonquil longed for the spring.

Each season had its merits and faults, each brought its own unique form of joy and adventure to all around it, but he had grown weary of the winter. Snow covered the landscape in a blanket, freezing the blooms and masking the myriad dips and turns of the land, turning what had once been a treasure-trove of adventure into a long, pale current. All of mother earth's secrets were hidden away, they certainly more difficult to get to with the threat of a body freezing and the senses growing numb.

Normally he appreciated the challenge. Not just the rediscovery of what he had known under another face in the spring and summer, but also the additions that winter brought, the creatures and formations that weren't present any other time of the year. Ice sculpted by nature, lakes frozen, they all offered new things for him to find, brought new paths to his eyes. He enjoyed them, truly, but there was a part of him that longed for a sunny field.

When he breathed in, the air hit his lungs like shards of ice, burned in his chest. Snow clung to his hide and melted, making him shiver even in the sun. His eyelashes froze, and that was more annoying than any of the other things put together.

He longed to smell the perfume of flowers on the air, feel the sun warming his back. To be hot enough to wade into the lake and take a swim... he wanted those days again.

And he would be content with them, for a time. Then he would begin to want the cold and the changing colors of autumn, and after that, he would hold his breath in excited anticipation of the first snowfall. It was the cycle of things, the way it had always been and would always continue to be.

It didn't stop him from wanting a little warmth, though.

Lifting his hooves high, he snorted, his breath forming a vapor in front of his face as he plodded along the hill. What he expected to find, he didn't know; the sun had risen some time ago, but its glow was feeble and yellow. He wanted the fire of summer, a bright orange punch to the senses, but he knew he wouldn't have it yet. Not just yet.

Still, his hopes were high that he would find some means to salvage the day. There could be beauty and adventure in nearly almost anything, if one set their mind to finding it.

Coming to the crest of the hill, he glanced around, amber gaze roving across the serene and still landscape. In winter, it seemed all of the world held its breath, even the birds migrating away to sing songs for Soquili in other lands. He missed the sounds of nature.

Tossing his head, he almost turned to go back the way he had came when something caught his eye. In the distance, far enough to be indistinct but not so far he couldn't recognize it for what it was, a Soquili appeared. To be more appropriate, she bulleted onto the horizon, mane and tail flying behind her as she ran laps in front of him. He blinked, attention caught and held by the vision, before a slow smile formed. Whether he'd realized it or not, when he wished for a sunrise, he'd been given one - it just seemed this one had legs.

He watched her slow to a walk and pause, apparently unaware of his presence. What kind of dedication did it take, he wondered, to be out and running in this kind of weather? Was it a mission of hers, a means to achieve some goal she had set for herself? Was it for exercise, perhaps? Fun? It would be impossible to tell.

Impossible, of course, unless he asked her.

He began at a brisk walk, descending the small hillside toward her, but momentum and his own playful nature inspired him to lengthen his strides and break into an easy run. He didn't want to startle her, so he shifted direction a bit, approaching her in an arc rather than head on; it seemed less like an attack that way, and more like they were simply running in the same direction. Well, until she had decided to walk, anyhow.

When he drew close enough to speak he slowed, shaking his mane and snorting cheerfully. He still kept a respectable distance, but he made it obvious that he intended to speak to her by examining her face, then holding his gaze on her eyes.

Purple. They were lovely, and he didn't think he'd ever seen quite that shade in a pair of eyes.

Lifting his left hoof, he pawed at the snow, smiling at her. "Hello. You made quite the vision just now, racing across the landscape."

Tsuki would have lied if she didn't act somewhat surprised. But the surprise wasn't because of the male's presence. For many moments she heard him walking and surveying the landscape. He was rather loud in his movements, and she assumed that he wasn't trying to hide from her in any way. But what heightened her own sense of shock was the fact that we was approaching her. Why would someone approach her? It had been ages since she'd talked to anyone new anyways! And as he spoke, he was smiling?!

She didn't asked to be watched. Nor did she ask for any kind of interaction. So to his comment, she was stunted on what to say. In her past she would have made a snide remark or something, and would have made fun of the stallion without even knowing anything about him. But this stallion wasn't here to mock her, instead he was inviting her into an open and kind conversation. She wasn't very good at handling herself in these movements. It was a pity she was so orange- if she could have she would have dashed away.

"I'm sure the vision was very bright." she gulped somewhat and lowered her eyes to the surrounding mush and snow. The male in front of her was very bright as well, but he had his own unique coloring just like she did. "Its rare that I get others watching me." she then admitted, while raising her soft eyes on the male's. "Were you bored or something?" Before even realizing it, Tsuki's attitude had come out of nowhere. Luckily for her, she didn't sound nearly as bad as she usually did. But her question could have been interpreted in countless ways.

Once she realized she had spoken so nastily, she flicked her tail in a nervous way and strode her eyes somewhere else. It's alright, she knew what to expect. In a few moments the stallion would probably laugh at her kindly and then be on his way. If she were him she wouldn't stick around a weird mare any day! So, as always, she prepared herself for this rejected feeling by allowing her mind to space out somewhat. All she could space out to was the fact that she herself was hopeless.

Or maybe Tsuki was slowly losing faith in others. Just because her past experiences had been so limited and short, didn't mean she should judge this new stallion and the friendliness he brought to the situation. Oh sigh. Why the hell did she think so much? She hated thinking! That's why training was so helpful- it dragged her mind somewhere else for countless amounts of hours. But to where mentally, Tsuki never knew or could understand.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 08, 2009 4:39 pm

Jonquil blinked, listening to the mare speak, but watching her movements and mannerisms as well, feeling that they were much more telling of her personality than the words alone. He'd made her feel uncomfortable, which was a unique sensation to him; he was certainly friendly and forward, but it had been some time since he'd encountered a mare or anyone, really, who didn't boldly reply to him and engage in a conversation. He didn't think of himself as a particularly intimidating stallion, but he could see how he could come across as a little overbearing, and he was sorry for it.

He would just have to do his best to mend the situation.

Canting his head, the smile still on his lips, he snorted a light breath. "I didn't mean to startle you. Sometimes I forget that the rest of the world isn't quite used to me."

It was a little chilly out yet, so he shifted his weight from foot to foot, hoping to keep some semblance of warmth as he did so. No doubt the mare was feeling the effects of the weather the same as he was, but she seemed to be fine. If anything, he was giving her more cause for concern than the n** in the air.

He traced an idle pattern in the snow, his eyes not leaving her face, but no longer locked on her eyes. He'd been told in the past that approach was a little intense despite its well meaning - he'd always appreciated when someone conversing him looked him in the eyes, and it seemed conversation was the most honest that way, but again, not everyone enjoyed that sort of intercourse. Many felt it too personal, especially when just meeting.

Voice kind, he added, "My name is Jonquil. I hope you don't think I'm rude for not introducing myself, but I was a little stunned. I'd been walking for a while thinking how lovely it would be to run into someone else, and you appeared on the horizon like you were summoned by the spirits. It threw me off balance a bit."

Jonquil? She motioned for her mind to remember such a name and shifted her own footing from the tremendous cold. "Well I'm Tsuki." she then said, while flicking her tail after she spoke. For some reason that overused action occurred naturally for her, and it was as if her own body was always reacting to her voice or something. "I don't believe you've done anything rude at all." she then added rather honestly. "And I'm not startled.." well, from the looks of things she probably was. But in her mind she was somewhat glad that he hadn't run away yet. She wanted to chat for awhile.

So to change the subject, she decided to comment on what sounded like a spiritual statement. Was he someone who believed in the spirits himself? Tsuki didn't know much about them in terms of her own living style, so she was curious. "Hopefully I can live up to the expectations you were looking for." her voice was still a bit shaky, but she was working hard to handle the social situation as best as she could. She knew with time she would loosen up and be more open in speech since luckily it had happened before!

"I wouldn't mind a little company myself." A slight sigh left her voice, but she quickly replaced her worried frown with a more suitable grin. "How has your winter season been going?" That seemed like a confident enough conversation starter. Tsuki had watched other soquili before and most usually stated with small chat to get to know one another. She was somewhat glad now that she had done her homework and watched others so long ago! Her father was clueless when it came to conversation, so as a child Tsuki relied on others to learn how to react and act.

And, it wasn't like she had never spoken to anyone outside of her family before. But in truth it had been months since her last encounter. So her confidence was gradually rising as each minute passed with the new stallion before her. So his name was Jonquil. Already she was getting somewhere by remembering his name! Hopefully she could grace him with a personality that was always trying to come out and play. Her parents had taught her to be so afraid, and why, she had no idea. So for now, she kept herself guarded as usual, since she was always wary of others while gaining new information!
PostPosted: Thu Jan 08, 2009 10:53 pm

Her confidence seemed to grow with each comment, and Jonquil was pleased by it. He hadn't seen another soul all morning, and it wasn't his habit to drive off company in any event, so he would've been sorely disappointed if he'd managed to do so this time. As it stood, he found himself intrigued by the mare, and was pleased that she seemed to want to further the conversation.

At the mention of winter, he glanced around, amber eyes roving the landscape for a second in quiet consideration. All in all, it had been pleasant. Though he hadn't been out and about nearly as much as he would have in the warmer seasons, it was true he'd met many new faces, most of them mares, and he didn't regret that. If anything, he considered the winter season particularly fine this year.

His pleasure reflected on his face, he tossed his head, shaking his braids out of his eyes as he looked back at her. "Though I've enjoyed it, to be perfectly honest... I'm ready for winter to pass. I'd like to see the grasses again, watch the river run, smell the flowers."

Jonquil had never been embarrassed by or ashamed of his appreciation of nature and beauty. As a colt he'd gotten some odd stares and the occasional snicker, but he'd shrugged them off then, and would certainly do the same now.

Conversations were fluid things, and he tended to respond to them in such. So, after answering her question, he lapsed into a brief silence, contemplating her name. Tsuki. It seemed cool to him, like a whispered breath of night air - he wouldn't have expected it for the brightly colored mare. Still, when he looked in her face, it seemed to suit her. Perhaps because of her eyes.

He'd seen clouds over the moon in a similar color. She was an interesting medley of night and day, sun and moon.

"Tsuki, is it? A pretty name." Swishing his tail, the act also more habit than design on his part, he glanced over his shoulder. "Were you running to any place, or just... running?"

His voice flowed so calmly and gently as he spoke. She wondered how it felt to be that cool and collected all of the time. And she could imagine it was mighty nice. "I'm ready for it to pass, too." she then said, while eying the snow wearily. "On some days when it looks as though everything is going to clear up, more snow will start to appear by the nighttime. And I'm totally sick of it." Nature had it's vicious cycles, though she supposed the same attitude could be said about a long rain storm.

She watched him quietly as he moved the braids out of his eyes. Braids- those must have been comfortable to wear! A part of her wondered if she should look into that sort of thing for her locks. Perhaps she could find a two leggar to attempt and do the same thing for her? Her father had given her a thick head of hair so such a thing was probably impossible. But she'd consider it just as something to do.

Her thought was interrupted as she noticed his complement and considered his question. He liked her name? She'd never really considered the importance of her name. Both her mother and father had only named her such because of the moon she acquired on her back. She rather liked her name, since it was quick and to the point! Like her usually!

"Thanks." she then said, with a quiet tone, "As for the running, I was training, and since its so cold outside my only option is to run around like this. Usually when its warmer I can swim or climb on steep trails." It really did suck to do the same running-thing everyday. But her body was thankful for it, and her heart was strong from the muscle work.

"I guess I should say that I do those sorts of things for fun." Well, that wasn't entirely true. But she liked to tell herself that so the training came easier. "What do you like to for hobby, Jonquil?" It was another attempt to try and get to know him better, since she knew that all Soquili had different tastes and pleasures.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 09, 2009 1:56 pm

The barrage of conversation without pause for answer might have put off some, but it only served to fascinate and amuse Jonquil. She seemed at least as curious as he, and eager to know more about him - which might have been flattering if he'd been the type to think that way, but he simply considered it a byproduct of her personality. Despite only knowing her a short time, he already liked her, and was just as interested in knowing more about her as she seemed to be about him.

Training, hm? He'd never conformed to a rigid schedule, and as a result, it was likely he was far from the most powerful stallion around. He could hold his own in a fight if it came down to it, probably, but he'd never found himself in a situation like that before, and he hoped he never had to. He preferred to use his fitness to carry him over hills and up mountainsides, to allow plenty of time for adventure, not for harming others. In essence, he could be considered a pacifist; aside from feeding, he could never think of a reason it would be appropriate to harm another creature.

He didn't get the impression that Tsuki trained to be a weapon, however. There was something too honest and frank in her expression and speech for him to believe she wouldn't simply come out and say so.

"I can't imagine running every day as training." As he spoke, his breath clouded in front of him, faded softly on the air. "You must be very dedicated."

Because standing still in the middle of a frozen clearing was beginning to get to him, he trotted around her, gaze finally falling on the marking on her back. It was moon shaped, and as he noticed it, his smile widened. How odd that his thoughts would follow that pattern only to have it surface on her very coat. It was just... fitting.

He ducked his head, stretching his neck and front legs as he did so. "As for me... It really depends on how the morning begins. Some days I'll stay at home and enjoy the company of family, some days I'll go exploring. Some days I'm content to just relax and admire nature."

Straightening, he added, "Today was one of those days where I felt I couldn't sit still. It's a good thing, too; I may have never met you if I hadn't left home. Isn't it odd how the smallest of decisions can change the course of your entire day?"

Heh, dedication. When Jonquil put it that way, it sounded as though Tsuki enjoyed it or something. But in a sense the stallion was completely correct, Tsuki dedicated her time and body to training as if it was her everything. But that's what her family did as a whole. And then as she got older and independent, it was what her father burdened on her to continue. And now she was what she was... and in truth she wasn't satisfied. But she was working on getting past her strange habits! And so far she seemed to be doing a fine job. "Well there are other things to do besides running but.." she paused then and realized she might have sounded silly. "It takes a lot out of anybody!"

So he had his own family, then? She could sense that he was a family guy- he was extra courteous in their conversation and easy to talk to. Those who wandered around alone were usually more rigid in their conversations. Jonquil must have had a pleasant family since he was as equally pleasant!

"I like having relaxing days myself. Though its so hard to be comfortable when it's this cold." she then said, while pondering some other topics. Rather then being nervous, she decided to go with them anyways. Jonquil wasn't the type to get freaked out by any questions! "Do you have any siblings in your family? Or just parents?" Or really, he could have one and the other, and she could never tell! "I think family is a nice thing for those who have them." Even if hers was.. strange. But not all memories were odd!

At his mention of their current day, she could only giggle lightly. "Well I'm thankful you were restless." Plus, she was thankful he spotted her as well. Even if she did look sort of silly running around in circles and such! "Its amazing who one could meet in these lands, but I suppose that's what makes this place so great you know?" There was always someone around to entertain and chat away.

And from her own observation Tsuki guessed that Jonquil had lots of friends, since he had a fitting personality to match such an environment! "Though then again, sometimes its possible to get stuck with some shady encounters. You never know what you'll find!"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2009 11:17 pm

As she warmed to him and began to come out of her shell, Jonquil found himself more inclined to smile. It wasn't that he generally had an unpleasant expression, just that he wasn't prone to wide smiles or laughter unless moved. This mare was friendly and engaging, though, and he truly was glad that they'd run into one another. For whatever reason, the spirits had seen fit to bring them together for a day; hopefully, they would meet again and become friends.

From what he'd gathered speaking to her so far, she was someone who would continue to intrigue him. He needed more people like that in his life.

Swishing his tail, voice pleasant, he agreed, "It's true you never know, but I've found that taking a chance and finding something wonderful is worth the risk."

As he spoke, the heavens began to litter the landscape with a soft falling of snow. It certainly wouldn't do for them to remain out in the open and get snowed on.

"You're right, it is cold. I was planning on taking a walk and then heading back; would you like to accompany me?"

She nodded at his statement and was quiet until listening to his next question. He wanted her to accompany him? She'd love to! But hopefully she wouldn't do anything weird or embarrassing. Then again, the stallion wouldn't have invited her if he was worried about that sort of thing.

So, she finally answered, "Sure, I'd be happy to accompany you." Tsuki smiled happily while realizing how good moving would feel against her chilled body. She wasn't sure where they would go but she decided to follow the stallion nonetheless.

This was so exciting for her! She'd never spent this much time with someone else before. She decided to embrace every second she had and just go with the flow as best as she could. And so far, things were going great in terms of comfort and conversation!

To start the conversation up again, Tsuki pondered what she wanted to know about the stallion. When she considered some topics, she realized there was a lot she wanted to know!

"So tell me more about yourself, Jonquil." she then said, rather calmly. Yeah, it was a very open question, but it was all Tsuki could muster. In truth, she was happy to learn anything else!

As they began to walk, he unconsciously settled into a position rather close to her, born from his personal preferences to maintain a close proximity to whoever he was walking with. He wasn't quite close enough to touch, but he could have reached over and nudged her if he wanted to. It didn't occur to him that this might be a little too close for comfort for some, but if that were the case, there was plenty of room in the clearing for distance to be put between them.

For his part, he thought their conversation was going rather well, and so it didn't even cross his mind. His steps were brisk, restoring heat in his limbs as he lifted small tufts of snow with his hooves and kicked them back.

She wanted to know about him? He didn't think there was much to tell, not much of interest, anyhow. He considered himself to be a fairly normal, mundane sort of stallion, not really interested in most things that other stallions were, and certainly not going out of his way to impress others with his experience and expertise. He was a fairly solitary soquili though not adverse to interaction, and when push came to shove, he was more likely to walk away than assist a confrontation.

Angling his head toward her, preferring to look at someone while he spoke to them, he pursed his lips and thought a moment. "I don't know that there's really much to say about me."

He chuckled, the sound low and brief. "I'm curious and friendly. I try to get along with others where I can, and when I can't, I try to part ways amicably. I love nature, and exploring is one of my favorite pastimes... though relaxing in a sunny field is just as fun."

He swished his tail, lapsing into a brief silence. He was unused to talking about himself, and it showed. The idea didn't bother him, he just didn't really know what to say.

"This is harder than I thought," he said suddenly, grinning. "Your turn."

In terms of closeness the stallion's positioning didn't bother her too badly. If anything she felt as though they were both warmer now, so to her it was a plus. She kept herself walking at the same pace as he and let her eyes glide forward at the usual bare surroundings. Well, the view was rather boring but at least she had company.

She listened quietly as he described himself and found it rather amusing that he was somewhat shy about the issue. For many soquili it was rather easy for them to talk about themselves. But she supposed even the friendliest of soqs could be somewhat modest in heart!

"So far I think you have described yourself well." she then admitted, while smiling at the thought. "I can tell you are all of those things." she wrinkled her nose then and thought of how to describe her own self. Well, so far she had admitted to training and all that nonsense. Now was her chance to just, say how she was in another aspect of life. So she tried hard to focus her thoughts together into a good response.

"I also love nature and relaxing. And I'll admit, I can be a bit impatient or rough but that's only because I've had some strange experiences before. I try to be as friendly as possible too." She pondered a bit more while feeling a jumble of rocks under her front hooves. "I like to dream on summer nights, and chase fireflies when they come out too."

She lowered her eyes then and realized she might have sounded silly. She'd never tell her father about such a useless pastime. But with Jonquil she felt as though such a thing would be ok to admit. "I miss all of the summer bugs that come out to play. I am glad they are resting for the winter season, but man, the days get lonely!" She loved butterflies especially. She thought soquili with butterfly wings were definitely lucky to be connected to such a lovely species.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 18, 2009 10:27 am

The comment about the fireflies made him smile, and he thought back to the warm summer nights, watching them dance around the branches of trees. As a colt, he'd bee fascinated by them, and had done his share of wandering after the bugs, but as he grew into adulthood, he'd begun to forget about their magic. Of course he still admired them, but he'd stopped following them to see where they disappeared to, and chasing them? Well, it had been far too long since he'd indulged himself in such an act.

"Fireflies... I can't remember the last time I chased a firefly." His tone wasn't mocking or demeaning; rather, he sounded a little wistful, a little amused. "It's a little sad how easily we set aside the simple things that brought us joy as foals. My brother and I used to play together quite a bit, though he was always more rambunctious than me."

In speaking of himself, he hadn't mentioned his family at all. Some might consider that a tell-tale sign of having a poor family life, but that wasn't true for Jonquil at all. While his parents hadn't been together for very long, he knew both his mother and father loved him dearly, and he had a strong bond with his brother, though it had gone by the wayside in recent years. They weren't a conventional family, but he knew they loved him as he loved them, and that suited him. While a part of him was defined by his family, he had been raised to be independent, and his own personality had been structured so that he did not define himself solely by his family.

Shaking his mane, careful not to get snow on her but unaware that the ends of his braids might have tickled her, he added, "I like the brightly colored bugs. The beetles with shiny backs, the butterflies with their soft wings, lady bugs. I used to turn over logs as a colt so that I could find them, until I realized I was ruining their homes."

Her comments about bugs didn't seem to bother him too badly. If anything, he found reflection in her own memories as well. She could only watch him as he responded, and her eyes were glued to his calm expression. She found herself also feeling shocked at a warm sensation that had developed on her cheeks. Why was she so embarrassed? She quickly shook it off and tried to focus on his words and his words only.

"Well perhaps when the summer comes again I'll help you chase them sometime." She wondered if her offer was too much for the stallion. But really, she meant it in good heart! "I find that the fireflies are happy for the company on the warmest of nights. Even if the the company are two adult soquili."

It was nice that he told a bit about his brother, and she wondered how different he really was from Jonquil. "Is your brother also purple like you?" she grinned at the thought and knew that her own siblings were very orange like her. "My own brother is quite the opposite, I seem to be the more lively one of us too." But hey, that's what siblings were all about.

She quieted herself then and realized she was probably talking too much. She sighed then and looked ahead into the quiet landscape. Everything would be so much better if it really were spring or something. If there were bugs around she and Jonquil could search for them and pick out their favorites! But, she changed her mindset when the stallion spoke of the creatures he enjoyed and knew they could at least reminisce together.

"Haha, I used to do that too." she then said, very naturally. "I would always forget that bugs have homes just like we do. I couldn't help myself back then. But at least now I leave them to their peace just as they leave me."
