The news had reached his mother's ears and hadn't been received very well at all. When it was mentioned that Ambroise had permitted the mare to explore the lands further she had become very 'grim' indeed. Ambroise (from a personal standpoint) had thought that he had done nothing wrong and had granted the mare permission to savour the beauty of the slopes. However, his mother had consequently clouted him upside the head and informed him all too plainly that while she was a grown mare it was still winter. With his brothers all busy and AWOL, it was his duty to forego his typical routine to ensure the mare remained safe and secure. After all, who knew where she might slip on black ice and then how would anyone find or help her?
While Ambroise had confidence in the mare, his mother's insistance had forced him out earlier than usual that morning. Rainbow tipped wings glided through the open skies and he inhaled the ice cold mists that had descended upon the mountains in the night. In spring these mists tended to lift relatively early in the morning, but in winter it took considerably longer. The further he flew, the more he recalled such things and it was begrudgingly that he accepted his mother's chastising. She may have been attempting to meddle (as usual) but she had a valid pointed. He really hated it when she did that...
Nevertheless, it was at times like these when complete focus and a ridiculous level of knowledge was required of the slopes. Endless patrols had ensured that this particular stallion could find anything on this mountain, even in the dark. However if one were to place him in the desert or on the lowlands he would probably end up very lost. Thus, though the mists were like a veil across his face and shielded most of the land from view he found it easy enough to locate the gorge and the 'hidden' area that the hotsprings resided in. He supposed the thundering water nearby certainly helped but given that there was a reasonable amount of distance between said waterfall and the springs...it was easier to stop short.
Coming in to land, the soquili gave a few 'bounces' to regain his footing on the gravelly ground and promptly furled his wings. It was at this point that he chose to remain outside the gorgeous, lingering by the 'door' as opposed to wandering in to give the mare a heart attack. He had his manners and had a suspicion that the poor mare would squeal in shock if he wandered in, in much the same fashion as his brothers, and declared it to be a wonderful (if freezing) morning. He'd simply wait for the shocked expression when she peeked out and then attempt to make it sound like this gesture was entirely natural for him.
It wasn't though, he was already fidgeting as his mother forbade him to pursue his daily routine - goodness only knew how he'd be a few hours from now!

Much as Yei might have thought otherwise, Elizabeth in no way considered herself neglected or in danger by being left to her own devices. True, the weather in the slopes was colder and the wind had more bite; true, she had to be careful to watch her footing to make sure that she didn't inadvertently tumble or turn her heel on a loose stone. However, after her personal tour the day before she felt herself at least minimally capable to handle herself; the protective warmth of the hot spring gorge would make an excellent 'base of operations' for the duration of her visit, and she had a decent enough sense of direction to find her way back to the lowlands after she'd satisfied her curiosity.
Thus far, she had been extremely pleased with her time in the mountains. True, Venom had been an unpleasant creature, but he seemed to serve a purpose; Elizabeth herself could never stomach that sort of behavior, but it took all sorts to make a world. Besides, it was better to have those of his ilk reigned in; as long as he listened to Ambroise and his herd, as long as he followed their edicts, that was better than having him running free to do as he wished, when he wished.
Just thinking about it made her want to wash herself again, even though she had already taken advantage of the surrounding hot springs the evening before. Having walked so far without taking much time to relax, she had gotten a bit 'grungier' than she preferred to be as of late; much as she might wish to bathe, the cold had thus far prevented it.
Consequently, she was more than willing to take advantage of the warmth and the sheltering walls of the gorge, soaking herself until she felt like a glorified prune before finally pulling herself out to enjoy a deep, relaxing sleep.
Having always been a morning mare, she was up with the sun and plotting vigorously how she would spend the day. Having drank her fill of the waterfall's beauty, she was ready to see more of what the landscape had to offer.
She just wasn't expecting that to be Ambroise.
Emerging from the gorge, she was smiling and bustling with all the appearance of a filly in an apple orchard. That animation remained, even when she observed Ambroise standing quietly out in front of the gorge's entrance. His presence, though unexpected, was hardly something to take starts at; aside of a slightly surprised look in her eyes and the fact that she immediately came to a stop, one would think she was expecting him.
The fact that she wasn't was obvious in her comment, though. "Ambroise, good morning! I wasn't expecting to see you today, is everything alright?"

Frankly he hadn't been expecting to see the mare this morning either, unless it was from a point in the air and even then it would have been unlikely that he would have disrupted his patrols. Unfortunately, things really hadn't worked out the way he had planned them and as a result he had found himself loitering outside of the hotsprings with what could arguably be regarded as a less than content expression on his features. Oh he wasn't angry that he was in the presence of a mare, he was simply antsy that he lacked the ability to continue with his routine and routine was something that was very important for him. He was not spontaneous like the rest of his family and was easily unsettled when things began to change... odd as that might have seemed to observers.
Nevertheless he was a stallion of his word and had an awareness of the expectations placed upon him. It was good manners to ensure the safety of a mare and if he was honest, his brothers really were unavailable. He was the only individual that he had at his disposal to be a tour guide, simply because his mother was preoccupied with her own duties and his father was generally up before Ambroise was to begin his own patrols. In a manner of speaking his father could do so with sufficient ease because he glowed in the dark, but it generally placed all the responsibility upon the eldest son.
Sociable or not, he was a tour guide.
That being said, his expression soon shifted and he sucked in a deep breath as his gaze flicked towards the mare. He'd heard the hooves and had only half registered them until the mare had finally spoken. It was then that the antsy expression had shifred and had been replaced by his usual stoic expression. He couldn't help it if he seemed to lack personality on occasions but smiling and general merry behaviour were something he was only sucked into during reunions and even then, it had to be very humorous for him to crack a smile. At the very least, Elizabeth could be safe in the knowledge that this expression usually meant he was in a good mood.
"Good morning," he replied smoothly, turning his head a little more to face the mare. She looked suitably refreshed to say the least, the gorge had obviously provided her with ample shelter and she was in good spirits... if a little surprised to see him. Alas her merry and almost childish expression hadn't been lost on him and it seemed he had been permitted further inside into the mare underneath. Manners or not, there was a giggling mare in there somewhere, he just lacked the sense of humour to get it out. Somehow, he doubted that his dark and often dry humour would be received well.
"Everything and everyone is perfectly safe," he reassured her and rolled his shoulders. He was used to standing for attention for long periods of time but that did not stop limbs from going dead or locking up. "However you are dwelling on one of my routes and I thought it convenient to drop in..."
He may not have approved of telling tales but at least he was good at it when he had to.

"I see." Actually, Elizabeth didn't see; she had been very much under the impression that Ambroise was a busy sort of stallion with a great deal to do, roaming about the lands and observing things, keeping Venom in line, and doing other such things. Even if she was on his route, it seemed very odd to her that he would be bringing her along; being bound to the ground and forced to keep an eye on a stranger who may or may not be easily chilled couldn't make things easy for him.
But no, after a moment she dismissed that thought. Obviously Ambroise wasn't planning to accompany her again today, he was just ON patrol or whatever colloquialism it went by, honestly passing her dwelling, and making sure that she was well-rested, fed, and had no new concerns or questions. A brief enough stopover, and a reasonable one at that.
Having come to that conclusion, she gave him a grateful look. "Well, I'm glad to hear that everything is alright; waking up to have company has a tendency of resulting in bad news, so I'm glad to know that such is not the case today. And you are very kind in your stopover, I'm sure that you'll be glad to know that I found this place completely to my liking; there is ample food around, the pools are warm, and the view is breathtaking. I should be able to make it back here with no major concerns later today, I have a reasonably decent sense of direction."
That done with and any concerns she could think of having been addressed, she lapsed into silence once again, waiting for the expectant head nod, brief comment, and departure on the part of Ambroise. Nice to know that there was at least a little she could predict up here...

Ambroise would often have agreed that he led a busy life, but really when one would converse with his father it was generally reagrded as quite the opposite. Grencia was a renowned family man, content to spend time with his family while keeping up with his duties. Grencia had long ago mastered the art of patrolling, training, meditating, instructing his children and spoiling his mate rotten. He could do all of this daily and without breaking a sweat! Thus, when Ambroise would proclaim that he spent all of his day patrolling this might have been true but it was not the most constructive way to use his time. Granted, over the course of the year he had adopted the role as tutor to a number of foals in the herd but this barely compared to the activities his father took part in.
In short, Ambroise led a rathre mundane life and was content to admire the views and muse over his own thoughts and concerns under the guise of patrolling. He did his job and admittedly, his continued presence in the skies above often proved to be a deterrent but everyday one could argue that he could've completed such a thing hours ago. That being said, the rainbow stallion had few other responsibilities other than the safety of his slopes - he had no lover, no mate and he certainly lacked children so there really wasn't any reason for him to partake in other activities other than to be sociable.
The gods knew he wasn't sociable.
Nevertheless, Elizabeth's converns while sweet were wholey inaccurate and she would be subject to more of Ambroise's company for the time being. Such was the orders of his mother and he had begrudingly accepted. This wasn't to say that he didn't trust Elizabeth to tend to her own needs accordingly, but should he return home prematurely it would be safe to assume that he would have a headache that only aspirin could cure. So, while she might have assumed that her answers were sufficient the stallion made no attempts to move away and merely nodded in response.
With a ruffle of his wings he turned round to face the mare at last and regarded her more closely. She seemed well rested, the initial and bubbly appearance from the gorge had not been a piece of his imagination after all. Evidently his decision to take her to such a location had gone down well and he could be satisfied and a little proud that he had offered it. He wasn't one to strut or flaunt his ability to be considerate but he could be content that he had made the right decision despite his short comings.
"Generally, news on the slopes is good regardless of the company you may find yourself in during the morning," he reassured her calmly. It seemed to be a mountain soquili trait to drop in unannounced, even more so at peculiar times of the day. "I am content to know that such a location was met with your approval as well," he added, aware of his lessons in etiquette even if his manners were a tad stiff. Then again he was never one to deny that his personality could be a tad 'wooden' on occasions. That being said, pleasantries now addressed her could move on with matters and attend to his responsibilities all in one shot - it was just as well he didn't mind 'dawdling', though he'd be loathe to admit it!
"Pleasantries aside, might I enquire as to where you desire to go this morning?"

Unaware as to the complex machinations of family politics and the determination of some mares that their children be happily settled or else, Elizabeth had no knowledge or understanding of the issue Ambroise was currently facing, nor was she likely to have had much insight to offer if she did. Ambroise's attention (or lack thereof) to social matters was his own regard, and if it was within his power to be more efficient in his time management, well...that was up to him to determine, not her. Really, even suggesting such a thing was beyond her comfort level; above all else, one must not impose.
Besides, she had always regarded herself as a self-sufficient mare. Maybe she wasn't as rough and rumble as the typical tomboy, and maybe she was a bit more attentive to decorum and manners than the average Soquili in general, but bearing aside she was just as much a Soquili of the lands as the next. She knew how to keep herself fed and warm, and for the most part how to keep herself comfortable and entertained. On top of that, she knew how to assist a human with HER life and keeping her fed and entertained, knowledge that she felt no small amount of pride in. She was not the sort of mare that needed to be cossetted, thank you very much, though she had absolutely no objections to chivalry and basic good manners.
Basic good manners being something that Ambroise displayed in spades, he was the sort of Soquili that she delighted in and was always pleased to see and converse with, especially when he was being so attentive with regards to her comfort and enjoyment. Any stiffness on his part she dismissed, regarding such as merely his manner; she herself had a tendency towards stiffness, so she certainly wasn't going to be complaining or objecting to that quality in anyone else!
Consequently, she took his greeting in stride and answered his question easily, not having to pause at all to think before responding earnestly, "I wasn't really thinking that I would set out for anything in particular today, just walk and see what I saw. There's so much opportunity for sightseeing up here, considering how very different the terrain is; really, I haven't seen anything yet that hasn't been beautiful, so I'm planning on just...roaming." Having her hot springs to return to, she was more than willing to brave the cold wilds, though she felt it necessary to add, "Believe me, I'll be careful of my body temperature. If I even think I'm starting to get chilled, I'll take a break from the winds and warm up."
Having cleared that up, she tilted her head slightly to one side and asked, "So where are you off to, or what are you looking to accomplish today? Only if you feel like sharing, of course."

She was one of his 'dream mares' if he had ever lay down to consider such a thing. If any of his brothers were to pose the question then there was a chance that they would find he listed qualities that she possessed. She was kind and considerate when required, yet possessed a great many additional manners. She could conduct herself in nearly every type of situation while maintaining her dignity. Not only that, but she seemed to be suitably self sufficient and the more she spoke the further this was proved. While his mother might have insisted he aided her, it appeared that this mare didn't require his company or attention in the way another might. it was refreshing to say the least, but also left a startling impression on the stallion in a manner he didn't truly understand as of yet.
Perhaps when he had been given the opportunity to rest, meditate and to consider then he would realise that his mother's wishes weren't completely out of his grasp. A die hard romantic, she'd always insisted that there was a love out there for everyone even if it took them years to find. Now, Ambroise was not inclined towards this emotion and often took a more practical stand point but the fact still remained that what he desired in a mate (if he were to consider it) had been very neatly packaged into an albeit stunning mare. No doubt it would come as a surprise at a later date but for the time being, this little 'start' wasn't something he regarded as important.
...Just a shiver up the spine, nothing more.
"Suffice to say I am glad to hear that you are more than capable of attending to your own wants and needs," he replied after he had received an overwhelming number of reassurances from the mare. He hadn't even requested them! On the contrary he had asked her where she had wanted to go and had received a rather vague response - granted this worked to his advantage but he was in two minds. Either she had rejected his escort or she hadn't really picked up on it - he was assuming that she simply hadn't understood it as he'd never been very clear unless he was clouting his nephew (or brothers) around the ears during training.
"Rest assured you made that well known a number of times and I can safely say I believed you the first time," he explained after a moments pause. It was then that he cleared his throat and ruffled his wings against his sides, fitting them more closely against his stomach to keep in the warmth. "Nevertheless in regards to my own itinery for today - I have none," he pursed his lips briefly and kept his pale gaze fixed on the mare. "I am to tailor my day around yours, if you feel so inclined to accept my guidance."

Well, that was rather surprising, to put it mildly. Having first heard him say that he was on a patrol route, Elizabeth was first taken aback hearing Ambroise say that he was at her disposal. However, that realization only made her raise one brow slightly, then smile. She was a practical mare, true, but she could appreciate the attention to etiquette on his part in trying to make her believe she was 'on his way'. The fact that she wasn't was all the more surprising, but even more flattering. Obviously if one wanted to find Soquili of manners and consideration, one needed to head to the slopes!
Far be it for her to brush off such thoughtfulness. Inclining her head slightly in a grateful nod, she met the stallion's nod with a pleasant smile. "I am once again in your debt, Ambroise; I can't deny that your company would be pleasant, if you truly have nothing more pressing or interesting to attend to."
Having taken care of that matter, she glanced about, then offered, "Do you have any recommendations or suggestions? In terms of travel, today I am yours to direct. After yesterday, I don't doubt that there will be something to delight in, regardless of where we go." Perhaps in time her foal in an apple orchard enthusiasm would wear off, but for now, she was just living the dream!

She probably should have thanked his mother and her meddling ways more than the generosity and consideration of the stallion that stood before her. Such was the manner of his thoughts as he dismissed her reference to 'debt' with a shake of his head. He had no interest in stock piling 'debts' with anyone - while some liked to have such things at their disposal he would sooner forget them and accept it was his good deed for the day. That was another thing his family seemed intrigued by...Karma. While he wasn't really a believer in it he still felt that niggle of expectation and tried to at least act relatively well mannered when he had to. He may not enjoy being in constant company of another but when it had to be done, he would do it admirably - well, sort of.
Nevertheless he was not the most creative of stallions, nor was he the most spontaneous and given that his mother had booted him up the rear this morning he hadn't really formulated any plans. Mulling over appropriate locations often took too long in his head, particularly when he had to think of more than one. Had he been one of his brothers her question would have been easy to answer but at present he could do nothing more than flounder in a sea of nearly 'endless' possibilities.
...It was time to take a leaf out of his father's book.
"Given that I directed you for much of the previous days proceedings I would say that you are more than entitled to do the same to me," he offered a stiff smile and shook his head. He hadn't a damn clue where to take her and spontaneity had already been covered, so it was time to give the mare the opportunity to explore as she desired with guarantee of a guide for when she became cold or when she approached dangerous terrain - Yep, he was being lazy again. Somewhere, Yei would be smacking her head against a cliff face at his behaviour.
"You are more than welcome to follow your hooves and I will provide you with ample warning should we encounter unstable terrain. Should you have any questions I will be here to answer but for this afternoon I am yours to command," he hadn't spoken so much in his life as he had in the last two days. "So without furtheradue, after you, m'lady..."

Another surprise, although this one was a bit more of a shock. Elizabeth couldn't say that she had even considered the possibility that Ambroise would want to just...tag along. Once again, she found herself regarding him with surprise and confusion, and once again she came up with nothing. Giving her a tour was once thing, but for him to just wander around and provide answers on a whim...it seemed very peculiar that he would be willing to give up his own time to indulge in the fancies of a mare.
Then again, perhaps this was his version of taking a vacation. If he worked as much as she was thinking, then it was quite understandable that he would want his rest to be minimalistic. Workaholics couldn't just sit still, she'd always figured, so for him this might be the closest he came to a real rest. She certainly wouldn't begrudge him that; this meant she'd be doing what she originally thought, just with company. There were worse things...
At his "m'lady", she had to laugh, but stepped forward and passed him at his gesture. "Certainly, kind sir. If you'll follow me?" With that, she started off down the path, heading west. No sense in having the sun in their eyes as they walked, after all!

Vacation? Suffice to say he would be content to accept that reason even if it was wholely inaccurate. Even as she wandered about in an erratic fashion with no set plans or directions, he would still be keeping his gaze trained upon the horizon. Oh every now and again he would flick his gaze towards the mare, a reassurance that he was being as attentive as one could expect from a soquili of his nature. However her confusion hadn't gone unnoticed and he was well aware of how unlike him this behaviour was, unfortunately it did nothing more than to elevate his discomfort and all of his self control had to be placed in controlling his body to the point that it didn't stiffen up. The last thing he needed was to distress a typically formal mare, especially one that seemed to be so determiend not to impose on another.
Yes he found constant companionship a hinderance. Yes, he found it exceptionally uncomfortable to be in the presence of a mare. However this wasn't the thing that troubled him most. What caused the most unrest to the traditionally aloof stallion, was the manner in which the mare's quirks shone through. He had often disregarded the quirks of others, sighing in exasperation at some that his siblings progressed but those that belonged to creatures outside the family...were simply not important. Now things were different though, each time she displayed an unusual quirk he seemed to 'bank' it for further thought at a later date. It was odd and beyond disconcerting.
...Maybe his mother really did put things in the water.
"Of course," his response was immediate as he ran on autopilot. They'd already covered that he wasn't the best at conversation and for one to get a satisfying response they usually needed to address him directly. Thus, without furtheradue the stallion followed after the mare obediently, stretching out his limbs and giving his neck a soft crack to relieve the unwelcome tension within it.

It was an unavoidable fact that everyone had their own personal quirks; it was questionable just how much any individual would enjoy they knowledge that their own were a subject of interest. Had Elizabeth even suspected such a thing, then she would have stiffened up to a degree that would rival even Ambroise's worst. Fortunately for them both, though, neither seemed to be aware of the other's 'stiff' tendencies, or if they were, they were doing a decent job of hiding it. The only difference was that Ambroise was resisting the urge, and Liz...well, at the moment, she wasn't even thinking about it.
It was a beautiful morning. The sun hadn't been up for very long, and the ground was sparkling with the melting frost. True, it was a bit chillier than most mornings she experienced, but the nippy breeze made sure that she was awake and alert. Glancing back over her shoulder, she made a mental note of the location and appearance of the gorge's entrance; even though Ambroise was with her, it was never prudent to ignore important details like knowing how to find your way back.
But otherwise, she was going to be free as a bird today; today would be all about sights, sounds, smells, and other fascinating new experiences. Today, she would ogle the sight of sun glittering on the highest mountain peaks, admire the force that mountain rivers traveled down the hills, peer into the shadows of the crags...it was all so exciting!
Ambroise likely didn't think so; indeed, she didn't doubt that he was starting to think her a rather silly mare. But ah well...sometimes, life was meant to be lived with exuberance!
That in mind, she came to another stop, this time looking ahead at the softly rustling grasses of what appeared to be a mountain meadow. Breathing deeply, she inhaled the scent of damp grass, then uttered a softly satisfied sigh. "It's so very beautiful...and I've always wanted to do this!" Then, without giving herself a moment to think better of herself, she suddenly took off running through the grass, her mane an tail streaming behind her.
This was a way to start a morning!

Though neither was aware of the others potential for stiffness, there would have been a good chance that if they were both to become as bad as Ambroise then it would be safe to assume that it would be quite a comical event. Ambroise was accustomed to the jests and teasing of his family, but it was unlikely that Elizabeth would be able to handle much of the same. He had always been stiff, wooden since childhood and only lightened up after his mother had snuggled him, hugged him or flopped on top of him in an overdramatic display of anguish at the fact that her son didn't love her. Suffice to say, it took even more discipline than Ambroise possessed to keep a straight face in the wake of such a demonstration and it could safely be assumed that Elizabeth would feel a similar strain.
Nevertheless, this point was irrelevant and could safely be cast to the side. What was relevant was the rather startling response Elizabeth had to the meadow. Now, Ambroise hadn't been in the Lowlands often but he was fairly sure there were meadows down there. Sure the grasses were a little shorter from constant grazing but was it really necessary to bolt across them? He'd never understand mares and as she shot off into the distance, gleeful at the dew tipped grasses he could do nothing more than observe.
Eventually he did move - however, instead of darting across the meadow he merely lunged forward and after a series of strides had thrust himself in the air to pursue her. Gathering the air currents beneath his wings, he swept to and fro behind the mare until he could at last see the rocky ground ahead of him. Still, as he spiralled in to land he did keep his eye on the mare to remain aware of her current direction...just so he could follow her properly.
Needless to say, from every angle she certainly appeared to enjoying herself and Ambroise could only assume this was those rare moments when she indeed 'let her hair down'. She suited it, Ambroise could perhaps understand why each of his brothers were so intent on finding mares who could be so content...

Yes, it was technically true that there were meadows in the lowlands. If one were being even more technical, there was an argument for the entire non-forested lowlands being one big meadow. However, it wasn't the meadow that was the excitement for Liz; no, the excitement was merely in the why and wherefore. Between the brisk wind, the beautiful dawn sky, and the graceful slopes of the mountains all around, it was just 'one of those things'. One of those beautiful, epic moments that just made you want to run!
Having already decided that Ambroise thought her silly, Elizabeth only felt a brief niggle of concern at her actions. Still, she had been told to do what she would, and as this had been part of the plan....yes, she had no regrets.
Still, there was only so long that she could caper about before common sense and practicality took over again, and she accordingly cantered to a halt after ten minutes or so, shaking back her thoroughly windblown curls and letting out a soft sigh of enjoyment. Yes, that had been very nice indeed. One more thing to check off of the list! Now, she just needed to see where Ambroise had gotten to...or if he'd fled in the opposite direction! Glancing left, right, and over her shoulder with no luck, she ventured to call out, "Ambroise?"
