The Past Life
"You call it madness, but I call it love."
-- Don Byas
Mark stood a ways back from the object of his ardor, watching as the junior student, Veronica, bought herself an apple. Oh, he loved her, he loved her... But she never noticed him. He had taken his usual daily routine, following her wherever she went, making sure she was safe from anyone who might wish to cause her harm, except during her school, when he worked. He had graduated.
The young man had tousled brown hair, hazel eyes, and a powerful build, but all in all was nothing far from the norm. Veronica was popular, beautiful, but stereotypical. Blonde hair, blue eyes, a mature body, everything the school's top girls have, including the personality. Day and night, Mark watched over her like a hawk, leaving only to work, sleep, and eat. As far as he knew, she never noticed.
One day, he plucked up the courage to talk to her for the first time. Stopping her after school, he pulled her away from the crowd. She seemed nervous... Odd. He discarded the notice taken and proclaimed, "Oh my sweet Veronica, I have watched you from afar for the longest time. I love you. One day, I wish to marry you, but for today I ask: Will you go on a date with me?" Her expression flashed from shock to revulsion to rage, where it stayed, contorting her angelic features. She shouted in her soprano, "No! Never! You're that creepy man who's always stalking me! Leave me alone! Never talk to me again!" She slapped him hard across the face with a resounding crack and ran. Too stunned to register the pain, he watched her go.
For the first time in months, he stayed in his home that morning. How could she do this to him? What happened to his perfect angel? All day and all night, he wept.
The next day, he spent deciding on a course of action, and getting the materials needed to follow it.
