Aphismet felt the car pull into the driveway with a kind of detachment. It was damned lucky he hadn't gotten into an accident on the way back from Chloe's. That had been the most heart-breaking, soul-shattering thing Aphismet had ever had to do. It was even worse because he LOVED her, and she Loved him too. They just hardly saw each other, and were in love more with an ideal of the other, a mental image that they carried around. Like, like a long-distance relationship. This was for the best, they were both needing to be living in the present, not in some dreamworld where they were dating when actually they weren't. They'd kissed what, three or four times? They'd spent the night together once! They'd been on dates a handful of times. And they had been going out for over a year.

Aphismet had been talking to himself mentally like this the entire drive home, which explained the near-accidents. It was hard for the chef to accept his own decision, so he had to keep reminding himself of why he'd made it. Sighing, Aphi realized he'd been sitting in the car in the driveway for ten minutes not. The white-haired man turned off the ignition and left the vehicle, walking to the house.

He'd left without telling anyone where he was going, thinking he'd only be gone for an hour at most... It had been three. "Isi? Rivener? Anyone?" Aphi called as he opened the door, kicking off his boots and slipping out of his snow coat. As he walked inside he passed the living room and spotted, on one of the shelves in the glass hutch, a bottle of scotch he'd been keeping. Well damnit, now was the perfect time. He headed for this, and it was with his hand in the hutch that Rivener found him.

"Aphi? What are you doing?" The scorpion noticed what Aphi was getting and he scowled. "It's like ten in the morning, Aph, what the hell?"

Aphismet just sighed, frowning at his ward. "If you give me crap about this today Riv, I swear-"

"Whoa, okay, okay, calm down. What's gotten into you?"

Still in his coffee-colored pin stripe pajamas, Isi came hobbling down the stairs, one arm guiding himself down the railing and the other arm curled about his crutches. It was too much of a bother sometimes, trying to go up and down the stairwell IN crutches, so Isi would ditch them and just use his own legs. He considered it exercise. As he finally made it onto the first floor, he carefully slipped his arms within the straps and gripped the textured rubber of the crutches handles. He had heard Aphi get up in the morning and leave, and he had just heard the car sitting in the driveway. It was this that beckoned him down.

With the swing of his legs and the thud of his artificial helpers, the youth found himself entering into the living room behind Rivener who was bombarding his guardian with questions. That was strange, usually around this time in the morning, Aphi was in the kitchen, getting himself reacquainted with the dishware and food in preparation for breakfast, but now he was here in the living room...with a bottle of alcohol in his hand?

At the sight of the intoxicating liquor, Isi at first felt a pang of uneasiness. A few years ago, alcohol had been the core reason why Aphismet and him became a family in the first place. Old Maasi had driven him from his home with a brutal slam to the cheek with the back of her hand and, in desperation, Isi had sought out aid in Aphismet's care. Seeing his adopted brother carrying the bottle made Isi momentarily fear the same treatment. But it was normal for someone to associate something they had known as bad with another.

Besides...There was something different here.

While Old Maasi had been a lunatic of an old lady with an attitude to boot, Aphismet was just...sad. There was a difference, and Isi knew that he had to do something. Pulling his brows together in a worried knit, Isi hobbled into the room, just enough to be seen, beside the floating raevan.

"Brother? I heard you call, what's up?" he chose his words delicately, not wanting to seem too forward or too distant.

Aphismet turned to face his brother when Isi came in. The chef sighed and walked over to a couch, plopping himself down and placing the bottle and the small shot glass on the coffee table in front of him. He kept his dark eyes focused on the grain of the wood under that glass as he talked.

"...I just broke up with Ch- Chloe." His voice had caught at her name, cracking with emotion he'd tried to keep in check in the car. Pale eyebrows knotted up and Aphi clenched his eyes shut, his lips tightening to a thin line.

"Wha?" Riv asked, shocked, his wings drooping with sympathy. "Wh-... Why? I didn't know anything was wro-"

"Nothing was wrong, Rivener. But even if it was you'd never know it, would you? Because the last time I saw Chloe was like over three months ago! We hardly speak, we've only seen each other a handful of times... What kind of relationship is that? So I went to see her and told her this was what I thought, and th-that it might be best if we stopped seeing each other." Voice shaking, Aphi poured himself a glass of the old scotch, refusing to admit how his eyes were glassing up with tears.

Tilting back his head, Aphi downed the alcohol, wincing at the burning down his throat. He wasn't used to that. Looking over, he waved at Isi and Riv, motioning them closer. "C-come on, sit with me guys. You guys will help me cheer up, right? We'll all get blitzed. Or well, just tipsy. Isi you're what now, almost eighteen? You can have some. Riv... Probably not good for you, so just like, er... watch."

Riv didn't have the heart to argue or protest, so he just glanced at Isi and shrugged, frowning with concern. He'd follow Isi's lead since Riv himself didn't have much clue how to handle this. He'd seen it lots in movies, but this was APHI. Rivener didn't want to pick the wrong thing to say and ******** things up even more. ...He'd let ISI take that potential bullet.

Like Rivener, Isi wasn't sure about what to say and after all the hardships, he was no more prepared to take the potential bullet than he was at the beginning of the troubles. Slowly hobbling forward with the scoprion raevan in tow, Isi sat himself down next to Aphi, sliding his arms out of his crutches and hugging them between his knees. He felt a familiar pit open up in his gut when he realized that Aphismet and Chloe weren't going to be together anymore. This was strange for him. Both of the adults were friends to him, each one dear to him, each one with sentimental value. When he first heard that they were going to be getting together, Isi was happy because he knew both of them, knew that each one was sweet and that no one would hurt the other...Not on purpose at any rate it seemed. But what Aphismet said was true, Chloe had been terribly silent ever since she was saved from her kidnapper. Too silent...There just had to be a repercussion sometime, though, Isi would have to admit that he wasn't ready to face this.

Then again, who could be ready?

"You did what you had to do," Isi said, carefully choosing his words as he watched his brother down a shot of alcohol. Already he could smell the strong steely aroma from where he sat and he pinched his nose. Just the mere smell of it made him uncomfortable, but he did his best to hide it. "Uh...Well, I actually just turned sixteen, Aph...Well, at least it didn't end badly. You know, it could've been a lot worse." Isi prayed that he wasn't saying the wrong thing and glanced back at Rivener who was feeling just as awkward and helpless as he was.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 05, 2009 9:58 pm

Aphismet blinked, looking over at Isi. "Sixteen?! ...Man, sometimes I forget how young you are. So mature. Well I'm glad you're sixteen, it just means you'll stay here with me longer." Not that Isikoro had ever shown any interest in leaving the house for studies or whatever. But still, Aphi didn't want to think of more people leaving and going away without keeping in contact with him.

"It ended well enough, but I just-... I already miss her. I hate that it had to come to this. How am I ever going to get over her? I just can't picture myself dating anyone else like EVER, but I j-just can't keep dating her just officially, you know? Dating without actually dating." He sighed, taking another glass of scotch and downing it. Already he was slightly tipsy, red in the face. Recognizing this, not wanting to be sick, Aphi put the stopper back in the bottle, frowning.

"This sucks. ...I'm sorry to be such a downer, guys." Aphi sighed, laying his head in his hands and his elbows on his knees.

Rivener was frowning slightly, at a loss. He had gone to sit across the way, and now he leaned over the coffee table and patted Aphi's shoulder lightly. "Erm... T-time heals all wounds?" Riv offered lamely, not wanting to be the only one not saying anything.

Aphi glanced up with one eyebrow quirked, silent for a moment before snickering softly. "Oh, Riv," he mumbled, shaking his head and falling back to lean his head against the backrest of the couch. "I g-guess I just have to... To not regret it so much? Do you think I made a horrible mistake? Was I too hasty, should I have been there for her more? Is it cruel to do this after what happened to her last year? Isi?" Aphi was looking to the poor young teenager for all the answers, quite unfairly.

Isi watched his brother speak and he leaned forward onto his crutches as he spoke, hugging them tight in his arms and looking over his shoulder at his brother who was already growing roses in his cheeks. He was glad that Aphismet at least had the mind to put the stopper back in the bottle instead of drinking even more. What he had still, could do its fair amount of damage. Releasing an arm from around his crutches, he put his hand on his brother's forearm as Riv took a hold on Aphismet's shoulders, "It's still too fresh to start thinking of that now, brother. Look after yourself for a while now, you're hurt and you need time to heal yourself, right?

"It's okay, you're not a downer," Isi promised, "Feel what you feel." Then, as he struggled to think of something else encouraging to say, the young crippled lad was hit with a barrage of questions. Isi hesitated, trying to calculate answers for them all, but as he stared at Aphismet's helpless gaze, his glossy eyes and sorrowful frown, Isi found himself scrambling for words. Slowly, he leaned back as well and turned his own eyes to the ceiling, "Aphismet...I think you did what you had to do. These things happen for a reason, right? Besides, it's stupid to regret, all it does is poisons you, keeps you from being happy. What's done is done, it's in the past, that's it, the end, period. You can't do anything about it except mope and that's not going to get you anywhere. You might as well look at the sky and regret it being blue. There's nothing you can do about it. What you can do is in the NOW. You have to figure out what you're going to do NOW, not then. You want to be happy? Do you want her to be happy? Then you have to start with yourself. That's the only way you're going to help yourself and the rest of what's important to you."

Aphismet listened to his little brother sound so much like a grown-up, and it was damned obvious why he'd thought Isi was eighteen. Aphi sighed and nodded, mostly to himself. "Yeah, I guess you're right. ...Who knows, maybe in the future if she's ever in a better place, we can try again. ...I'm going to miss her, even if I hardly saw her."

With another shaky sigh, holding back tears, Aphi reached over and took hold of Riv's wrist, pulling the Raevan over for a big hug, doing the same with Isi. "I love you two," he said quietly. Seems a drunk Aphi was an affectionate Aphi. "Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'm going to go to my room and wallow in this misery for a little while. ...I'll be down to make dinner later." Getting up, sniffling, Aphi headed for the stairs, climbing slowly to make sure his wobbling steps didn't accidentally send him tumbling down.

Rivener's wings had flared open momentarily at the hug, not used to such displays from Aphi, but he had allowed it. When the chef left, Riv glanced at the clock: ten thirty. Aphi would only have like an hour to himself before he forced himself to come and make food for them. Red eyes turned to Isi and the Scorpion spoke to the boy, something he rarely did since the accident.

"We should make him dinner. ...Can you cook? I can try to help..."

As Isi watched his brother stumble up the stairwell to his room, Isi felt himself relax in relief like a deflated balloon. He was hoping he had said the right thing and didn't sound too harsh, but he didn't know any other way to give that kind of advice. Though, it did make him slightly angry that his brother was sad in the first place. He didn't like seeing anyone in this home upset, including young Eiry who was still moping around the house, a ghost now even to his own family. It was frustrating, infuriating almost to not have the single sentence that would make everything better in a beleaguered friend. Sliding forward to wiggle his arms into his crutches, the boy flexed his weak legs and nodded to Rivener, "It would be best if we can get something down his throat that's a bit better than toast and butter. With nothing else in his stomach but alcohol, it'll be the ruin of tomorrow's morning. We can do what we can do," Isi grumbled and he forced himself up onto his feet, moving towards the kitchen with a limp and a hobble.

"I'm not sure how many stars my cooking would earn, but I hope that watching Aphismet cook has helped us some," the boy said as he made it into the kitchen and awkwardly fastened a apron around his waist and neck, "Come on, what will he make him?" he asked, turning to Aphismet.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 06, 2009 6:53 pm

Rivener followed Isi into the kitchen, frowning at how Isi's main concern seemed to be Aphi having a hang over tomorrow. It was a little bit more about Aphi being sad and always taking care of everyone and needing them to do something for him when he was sad, wasn't it? Huffing, slightly proud that at least RIV was getting it when Isi wasn't, the Scorpion shrugged. "He likes chicken things... It seems easy to just put one in the oven, right? Maybe we could just look up some recipe thing in one of those books and do that?"

Honestly, Riv couldn't even make toast and butter, so he was much less help than Isi, but he'd give it his best try. Floating to the dining room's bookshelf, Riv pulled out a book that very clearly stated "CHICKEN" on the spine. He brought it over to the kitchen island and plopped it down there, waiting for Isi to open up the pages and maybe pick something. "Unless you think something else is better?" Riv was asking honestly, not really sure what might be best. Chicken had just been the first idea that came to mind.

Honestly, Isi didn't know much else about alcohol other than it smelt bad, tasted worse, had terrible effects on adults, and that the only thing that would help was sleep and toast. Isi was but a child, he didn't know much more than that! But it was enough to give him direction. Isi glanced up towards the ceiling where his brother would surely be finally allowing himself to feel the full effects of his sorrow. The crippled boy pursed his lips. He might be focusing on Aphismet's hangover, but it was simply to cover up his helplessness for easing Aphismet's sorrow.

"Your guess is as good as mine!" Isi muttered, with a shrug. He moved over to the fridge and dug through it, looking for the chicken that Aphismet might have left behind, when he realized that it would be in the freezer. He switched and retrieved a frozen chicken, which he held awkwardly against his crutches as he moved over to the sink. "We have to thaw it first," he said, turning on the hot water, "How long do you think it'll take?" Isi solemnly thought about how he usually baked things...Not cooked them!
PostPosted: Wed Jan 07, 2009 8:58 am

Rivener had opened the book and was looking up the "roasted chicken" directory, blinking at the dozens of different ways. Although it looked like it was more about what you put IN and AROUND the chicken, so it was okay. The rest of the information was about the temperature and the time needed, which was all the same.

Riv looked up as Isi mentioned something about thawing the bird, putting it in the sink. Riv frowned slightly in thought. "Well, it's going to go in the hot oven, right? So it should thaw out in there as it cooks, right? We can just like, leave it in longer or something. Here, there's an easy recipe that says we just put onions inside the chicken and around it, with a little bit of water in the roaster. Seems easy enough, right? should be done in an hour and a half. But we'll leave it in for two, since it's frozen? What do you think?"

As he asked, Rivener was floating over to the cupboard and bending down, retreiving the large covered roasting pan that Aphi normally used. He brought it over to the sink and waited there until Isi told him it was okay to lift the poultry into the pan, since surely Isi wouldn't like fumbling with a wet chicken.

Isi watched with indented brows as Rivener warily inspected the contents of the chicken how-to directory. He glanced in between the bird and the oven, trying to remember how it was that Aphi did it and regretting the fact that nearly every time Aphi had made some variant of chicken, Isi was somewhere else. He was either reading something, engrossed in crafts, or outside in the garden, taking care of the plants before the dark settled in. Thinking about that though only reminded how much Isi wanted to do this for Aphi, do something for him to make him feel better since he's already done so much for them.

Shrugging his shoulders limply, the crippled lad agreed softly, "I suppose that makes sense. Let's do that. Put the chicken in. Is there anything we have to do for it other than that? Onions would be good, they're healthy, I think. I'll get them." Isi slipped his crutches off of his arms and carefully walked over to the fridge, using the kitchen counter to help him just slightly as he opened the door and searched around for the onions. He found them in one of the bottom drawers along with other produce and he got up carefully, returning to the countertop where most of the dicing was done.

Rivener nodded and lifted the chicken out of sink, putting it in the roaster with a thud. "The book also said to like, put seasonings on the top. Like salt and pepper I guess. Should we add anything else, do you think? I'll go look at spices while you cut those onions." The Scorpion floated over to Aphi's spice rack, staring at the labels with a finger under his lip, taking it very seriously.

"Ah, there's something actually called "poultry seasoning"! That HAS to be for this, right?" Riv grabbed the small bottle and brought it over, nearly shoving it under Isi's nose to show it off. "See? Here." The bottle was placed on the counter near the younger Delaran and Rivener returned to the book to check things once more. "Hm, onions, seasonings, water in the roaster, 400 degrees for an hour and a half. ...What's pre-heating mean?" Riv could guess it meant he had to warm the oven BEFORE putting something in, but he wanted a second opinion before he turned the appliance on.

"I know what pre-heating means," answered the boy with a prideful puff of his chest. He at least knew that much from his baking, "We have to let the oven warm up first before we put it in, otherwise it won't cook right." Using the counters to maneuver himself around the kitchen, Isi made his way to the oven that he readied for preheating. With a quick press of a couple buttons the oven was beginning its preheat for 400 degrees.

Turning himself around, Isi looked over at Rivener and the chicken. "Seasoning? Spices?" he echoed thoughtfully, "Yeah, of course!" and he coughed as he inhaled a whiff of the strong smell of the poultry seasoning Rivener stuffed underneath his nose, "That smells good, sure. Does it have instructions on how to put it in?"
