Princess…that was a nickname Juan had given her. A nickname was a sign of admiration, of love, and adoration. It was good. It was…..nice.

The big golden orb that shone brilliantly in the sky had wrapped itself across the woods once more. Day had come again to the much warmer land to set it’s heat upon the grounds that was far greater than the little foal was used to. There was no snow here, nor icicles, nor the chilly wind that would crawl up her back and slide down her legs. This place was too hot, too humid, and too scorching when one left the safety of the tall trees.

The little filly had seated herself so she was resting above her tucked legs that were placed comfortably below her upon the ground. Her large golden eyes traced over the crooked branches that intertwined with one another high above her head. Only broken rays from the sun could get into this place. The luminescent light dappled the wood’s undergrowth like the snow did on a bare log.

Such a calm and serene place this area turned out to be. Juan had brought her here not long ago, and even now as she sat alone the young foal could still feel his presence lingering from somewhere beyond the surrounding shadows. At last she could rest her head upon the ground and sleep peacefully. There was no one else around but she and Juan. Safety surrounded them by the hands of the trees. Yet the question, like a fly, continued to buzz back and fourth on the edge of her thoughts. Were she and Juan the only ones here in this shaded paradise? Or were there others lurking, just like her guardian, in the black abyss?

This was an unfamiliar forest. Something new and exciting, the musky scent dissolved with a sunny warmth that Taigi couldn't put a name on. It was like a fairy tale: dark and gloomy where the patches of sun rays dared not travel. The overlay of branches made patterns that cracked the mystical rays' luminescence into halves, quarters, eighths.

But there was a place that seemed brighter than most, several large tree trunks' distance away. Curiosity piqued, the ebony stallion trudged on, his cloven hooves making muted clops against the hard dirt. There was a twinkle from the centre of the semi-clearing. Something golden?

A surprised gasp left his lungs when he took the last few steps, one hoof suspended in mid-motion, green eyes resting at the unusual sight before him. It was a filly. A filly that filled his head with both memories and further inquisitions. Scenes flashed through his mind; A purple-and-white mare, an 'Alicorn', one that told him Unicorns have certain magicks. A rushing river.

He cleared his throat, unsure of how to act on such an encounter. But he nearly chuckled at the thought of himself as a youngling, running from home to interact with wondering adults. So this is how they felt, seeing a foal all alone and unguarded. She was a pretty little sight, a natural beauty. The filly seemed to belong here, in this light, webbed in pattern from the overcasting branches.

One always has a tingling feeling when they are being watched. Whether it is strong and as rough as if someone was tugging on their shoulder, or just a light whisper in the ear, the warning is there. It just depends on if the one being warned hears it...or feels it.

A sharp shiver, as painful as sleeping in snow, darted down Rosie's spine before she could take a piece of juicy looking greenery into her mouth. Driven by instinct, as quick as she could the alicorn withdrew her head from the ground and raised it up. A mix of vanilla and brunette colored hair fell over her eyes due to such a quick motion. With a puff here and there the youth managed to brush away the locks so she had a clearer view of the area.

With frightened eyes, once always on the lookout, Rosalia peered into the shadows. She couldn't shrug away the feeling that she was being watched. Yet she couldn't tell if it was over curiosity or because she had become someone's prey.

Rigid with the thought of becoming a meal for another the little filly wracked her brain for thoughts on exactly where Juan could be. Would her protector hear her if she screamed out his name now? Would he be able to come to her aid quick enough?

As fast as a rabbit the child jumped to her hooves and froze once more like a statue. At least now on all fours she'd have a better chance to run away. To escape from whatever may be lurking in the darkness.

In one gulp of air Rosalia puffed out her chest and stood up as tall as she could on her legs. Her wings fluttered at her side and bristled with fear as the little filly attempted to look brave. Whomever it was didn't have to know she was scared out of her wits. Maybe if she looked like this she'd scare them off. Least she could only hope.
