Makaa walked across the sands, the heat slowly making his temper grow. The doubt had momentarily left his mind and all he could think of was that SHE had lied to him. Well, she hadn't really lied, but she certainly hadn't said she was a Rebel. And it didn't matter, anyways. He was too mad to care.
He didn't realize it, but he'd made his way over to the rocks where they had explored that first day. He knew he had been told to stay near the den, but there were over ten other cubs around, he certainly needed his space. Grumbling and fuming, the young lord climbed up to a good vantage point and started scraping at the rock with his claws. He thought about what his father had said, how he was the second son, just as Makaa technically was, how Makaa could see past things like his father had. But despite everything, he HATED being lied to, or being made a fool of. And he certainly felt like a fool.

Zap was still a little distressed that Momma hadn't come home. But Papan seemed to still think she might come home, so she'd done her best to be positive, if only for her siblings. Today they'd wanted to explore, and she'd eagerly joined them for a time. She'd tried to talk to them about the rocks, but no...no one was interested.
While they played, she'd noticed someone climbing, and stopped long enough to see that it was Makaa (as well as to be tackled by some brother or other.) Pulling herself free of the pile, she'd told the others she'd be back and gone running, eager to see her new friend again. "Makaaaa!" Came her cry as she fought to clamber up onto one of the stones. "Makaa!" She danced in place, wanting to hug him, but knowing he'd rather not.

When Makaa heard his name called by a VERY familiar voice, every muscle in his body tensed, waiting for her to come within range. And when she was, he turned on her with a growl, tackling her and sending them both flying off the rocks to the sandy ground. He wore a snarl on his features and his cub-claws extended, not enough to pierce her, but simply a warning. If she moved, so would he.
"Tell me now, Zapaliti, and you had better tell me the truth. Are you a Safi or a Simo? Lie to me and I WILL know," he growled down at her, ears flat against his head and his red eyes burning into hers.

When he'd turned on her, she'd thought it was because she wanted a hug. When he flew at her, she thought he was playing. When they fell into space, she assumed it was an accident. When she hit the ground, and the wind left her in a gasp, she realized this wasn't fun anymore. Her own ears lay back, flattened tightly, and her green eyes met his. Her paws pressed lightly at his chest, not from weakness, but because she was scared. What had happened to her friend?
"I told you! I'm from here! Momma's the queen's story teller and everything!" She trembled under him. What was wrong with the world? First Momma had left, and then her new friend thought she was from some bad place...It was cruel that such a gentle cub had been born into such a troubling time, in a place as dangerous as this. "Makaa...I didn't lie! Why would I ever lie?"

Makaa searched her eyes for what probably felt like an eternity, his expression changing slowly from his anger to confusion to something almost like sadness. He believed her, and he was immediately ashamed. He knew his father was old and there was the possibility that his memory wasn't the best, but he had wanted to believe his father because he was his father. By the Goddess! What had he done? He saw the look of fear in her eyes and felt it in her touch and he... Well, he felt low enough to slink beneath the sand.
He slowly got off of her, his eyes cast downward. "I... I'm sorry, Zapa. My father told me he didn't know your mother and I believed him. I mean, wouldn't you? I... I got mad. I can't stand liars, it's dishonorable and... And I have no excuse," he said softly, unable to look up at her as he tried his best to apologize for his error. He couldn't feel worse. He'd told her he'd protect her and instead he had attacked her and accused her of lying to him.

When Makaa held from attacking her further, Zapaliti began to gain a little hope. She was frightened, of course, and sad, but she knew she wasn't wrong, and as long as she had that...well she'd be alright in the end. Her ears still lay flat even as he began to believe her. He'd believed her the other day, hadn't he? Only once he climbed off of her did she dare consider moving.
Slowly she'd rolled over, sat up, head low and ears still half-flat. She was unsure what to do...he was her friend, right? But (even though it had only been for a moment) she'd been afraid. The only other time she'd been afraid was when Momma hadn't come back. She didn't like to feel that way. But Makaa hadn't meant to, had he? He'd said that he'd just been believing his father...maybe Momma didn't know his father? That was always a possibility, right? So it might all just be a mistake.
She managed to look up at him. He wasn't looking at her. For a brief moment she considered running back to the den, hiding and staying put...but no. Friends were friends, even when they fought. She shuffled forward, on guard but trusting, and butted her head against his back. A deep breath. "It's okay. I'm not mad at you, Makaa."

Makaa sighed and shook his head when she nudged him. She wasn't mad at him... "You should be. I would. I attacked you, could have hurt you, and all because I was mad at myself for trusting a stranger. And worse because I thought you were a Rebel, and that would mean that I trusted one of THEM and.." he trailed off shaking his head again. After a moment, he turned to face her and looked at her shoulders, where his paws had held her down. "Did I hurt you?" he asked, looking for any damage while awaiting her answer.

"Well I'm not you." Obviously. "And you couldn't have hurt me. Don't worry." He probably could, but in her innocent mind, even if he'd thought she was Rebel, he'd have simply yelled and chased her away. Her trusting would likely get her hurt one day, but until then she would be content to believe.
"I'm fine, Makaa." She let him look her over, then bumped her head to his in assurance. "Though if you're still worried, then I can always jump on you from up on the rocks. We'll be even then, right?"

Makaa couldn't help but smile a bit over her innocence and her attitude. She had no idea that if he had seen lies within her eyes, he would have torn into her as best he could. He would have regretted it, for he knew he probably wouldn't have been able to finish the job and would have had to run home, to get his father. He might have even cried. But he forgot about that. Because she hadn't lied to him. She wasn't a Simo. And it looked like she still wanted to be his friend. "I don't think you have to, unless you want to," he replied, chuckling a little and rubbing the pads of one paw over the side of her head. His father would likely skin him alive if he found out where he was and who he was with, but the young lord couldn't help it. He'd made a promise, one he intended to keep.

There! He'd smiled! In Zap's mind that meant all was well. Eager to get back to the business of being cubs, being friends, she lingered only as long as his paw did on her face before wiggling and turning a circle, stepping back and lowering herself into a play position.
"So! Other than climb rocks and stuff, what do you like to do?" Honestly she'd become a little bored of late. Same sand, same stones, same strange grasses here and there. The only things new were the other lions, and most of them were adults, and seemed to be less playful.

Makaa smirked at her when she hopped away and took a challenging stance. "Well, I'm kinda laid back," he replied, matching her pose a bit and batting a bit at her. "I like spending time with my Father just talking. Other than that, I spend a lot of time fighting with my brothers and nephews, or wrestling with my sister Para," he added and tackled her, playfully this time, and sent them both rolling.

Zap giggled when he batted at her, her tail held high like a banner. Now and then she'd slap one of his paws away before it hit her, and offer a strike of her own.
"Eee!" She squeaked when he tackled her, and she tried to roll so she'd come out on top. Still, her life hadn't been quite as full of battling until then, and at best they ended up both on their sides. Her little feet kicked out play fully, clawless-feet scrabbling at Makaa's belly.

Makaa had smiled when she parried his batting. And he fought the urge to laugh when she kicked at his stomach. It tickled a bit, but warriors were not ticklish, so he didn't actually laugh. He retaliated, though, by wiggling his front paws against her sides. "What do you like to do?" he asked, tilting his head to one side, lifting his ear off of the sand.

Zap was not so stubborn as to hide her laugh, and at his tickling it pealed out of her, making her kick all the more. "Nooooo!" She play-yelled, placing a paw on his nose and shoving him a little.
She managed to contain herself, though she kept patting at Makaa's face. "I like..hmm. I like to play with my siblings too, though we don't always fight. I like the hiding game! And the tracking game too. Sometimes I try to tell stories like Momma, but I'm not good at it."

Makaa smiled at her laugh. He liked it, though he wasn't quite sure why. He chuckled a bit, pawed at her nose, and let his limbs more or less flop down. "Well, I've got three brothers and two nephews I spend most of my time with. I get along with my nephew Ali the least, I think. I try to look out for my nieces and sisters, but it usually starts fights," he replied with a small shrug. His tail swished in the sand as he thought about it. Come to think of it, his neck was still a little sore from the last fight he'd gotten into. It had been nice, his father helping him clean it up, but to have gotten in the first place hadn't been nice at all.
"Like a few days ago. I tried to teach him not to pick on my sister, but he attacked me from behind. I ended up scratching his face and he bit the back of my neck pretty hard," he added, a little offhandedly.
