One of the unfortunate things about growing was that, when you woke up in the morning, everything that had previously been just your size was now much too small. It was like being Alice in Wonderland, almost, though as far as Edwardian fairytales went, she much preferred Peter Pan.
Anyway, Ophelia had managed to update most of her wardrobe, but one crucial part was missing: a bathing suit and surf gear. That was what brought her to the surf shack in the middle of winter.
She wasn't sure if the fact that the manager, who she had to admit she had a crush on, now noticed her was good or bad.
"You sure you don't want a bikini?" he asked her.
"Do you have any one-pieces in that size?"
"Pretty body like yours, why do you want to cover it up?"
Ophelia grumbled and stepped away from the counter to try to decide on the best course of action.

Leviathan was in need of a new wet suit. He'd had his for quite some time, as it were, and he was getting a little bored with it. He used it so often, it was getting a little worn. Sable had given him some money, just enough for a wet suit and ice cream on the way home. The child had selected his new suit and was heading over to pay when he heard a very familiar voice.
"...Ophelia?"
He hadn't seen his friend in a little while; Leviathan had been ground for quite some time. He was still allowed to surf (this was mostly because Sable figured a lobster-child might die if he didn't go to the beach), but there was no visiting with friends and definitely no computer time.
Hmm. He hadn't seen Ophelia come in, had he? Just an older girl?

At the sound of her name, Ophelia turned around and breathed a sigh of relief. "Levi!" she exclaimed, breaking into a grin. "Guy at the counter's giving me a bit of trouble," she added, motioning behind her a lowering her voice.
"Where've you been?" she continued. "I thought I saw you at the beach a while ago, but I wasn't sure. I've been looking for you on AIM, but you're never on!"
Her manner of speaking had changed a bit. She'd lost childish affectations, but picked up a bit of Wisp's excited whine.

When Ophelia turned to greet him, Leviathan's heart dropped to his feet and a cloud of butterflies swarmed his stomach. "What the hell happened to you!?" he squeaked, trying hard to keep his jaw from dropping. The boy blinked a few times and shook his head, making sure this really was Ophelia standing in front of him.
"Uh, yeah...I got grounded and...WHEN DID YOU GET SO TALL."
This was just too much for the lobster-boy to handle. Ophelia was all tall and curvy and and and...her...look at her! What was going on? And what was a boy to do?!

Ophelia looked down at herself, a bit surprised. "Oh," she said, realizing the source of Levi's confusion. "Like a week and a half ago." She shrugged. "And it kind of sucks because now the manager is leering at me."
She ducked down an aisle of surfboards, trying to get a bit of privacy, and motioned for him to follow her. "The whole overnight puberty thing's apparently kinda common?" she added. "It happened to a lot of my friends, too."
"Why are you grounded?" she asked.

"...really? I thought puberty was supposed to be long. And suck." Of course, Rook and Saint didn't really have to deal with those things. Hmm. Maybe Sable had it all wrong. "...I want puberty..." Leviathan mumbled, mostly to himself. No fair all his friends were growing. He wanted to be tall, too!
Lev shrugged and looked to the side. "Oh, you know. Trying to hack into my dad's work files." It wasn't his fault he was really good at learning things fast. And Juno just wanted the...well, he wanted to see the files on himself. Because neither Sable nor Juno would tell him. "I got caught before I could access the documents, though. Total waste."

"Which definitely explains why I haven't seen you since, like, August," replied Ophelia. "Any chance of you being, you know, un-grounded soon? I need someone to go surfing with - I'm getting pretty good! Probably not as good as you, but I don't fall over immediately now."
"Except I haven't lately because, one, it's been kinda cold, and two, I don't have a bathing suit that fits anymore, and three, the jerk at the register is giving me a hard time about buying one."

"I have nooooo idea. Sable's been in a real weird way lately. Always chatting with himself, and not so much with me." The child shrugged. "Maybe if he stays distracted, I can sneak out longer. He does let me out to surf, you know. But mostly when he knows no one else will be at the beach."
Leviathan rubbed the side of his face and stoop on his tip-toes, glowering at the punk running the register. "I can bite him for you, if you want. I'm really good at that." He had broken Rook's arm instantaneously, after all. "Or you could hit 'em. That's what girls do to crummy guys in movies."

"Movies being movies for a reason," replied Ophelia, peering between a pair of surfboards. "He's got to get off his shift soon, right?" she asked. "And then maybe someone nicer will be working the register."
She should have asked her father to come with her, but Prosper had made it pretty clear that he knew next to nothing about teenaged girl things.
"When does he let you surf?" she asked. "If I know, maybe I can meet you there? Same beach, right?"

Leviathan snorted and rolled his eyes. He was sure girls could hit stupid guys if they wanted to, in the movies or not. Hell, he hit other people if they were jerks, and he wasn't in a movie. "How do you know he didn't just get on," Leviathan pointed out, more than happy to pop Ophelia's bubble. "Can we hit him then?"
Leviathan folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the nearest shelf. It wasn't quite so hard to talk to Ophelia now, but it was still really weird. He wanted to grow, too! "Uh...same beach. Usually at the crack of dawn, or during twilight. Mostly dawn; later in the evening has couples on romantic walks." Leviathan made a disgusted face; people sucking face on his beach? Unacceptable.

"Early morning?" asked Ophelia. "Aren't you worried about sharks?" Supposedly that was when they hunted, but she'd seen surfers out during that time of day. Sunrise over the ocean was certainly pretty.
"I say we count to three and charge," she added, looking back at the cash register.
"Maybe I should get a wetsuit."

"...no." Sharks, smarks. "As long as you don't bother them, they don't bother you. Or at least, so I'm told." It made sense to him. "And besides, look at my arms? Imagine if a shark bit that? It'd break his stupid teeth right out of his head." Leviathan cackled quietly to himself, immensely pleased with the idea of beating up a shark without even trying.
"So are you getting something, or not? 'Cuz we gotta leave the money on the desk if we're just charging him. If I get arrested for shop-lifting, my dad'll skin me alive!"

Ophelia peered at the counter, her resolve wavering. "Um, no," she said, "I'll just come back another time. It's not important. It's still too cold to swim, anyway."
She looked over at Levi and sighed. "I have totally always been this lame, haven't I?" she asked.

Leviathan rolled his eyes and shook his head. Girls. Man, she should have just let him punch the jerk at the counter. "You sure? I swear I can take him." He did take down his older brother, after all. It only took one match; now Leviathan was king of Dagon kids (even if he was the youngest). He shuffled and stretched, gazing around the store once before looking back over at Phelly.
Brushing a strand of teal hair behind his ear, he gave her a smirk and a nod. "Pretty much. You're the only girl I know that can kinda surf though, so at least that's something," he offered. "And you're pretty. That always helps..." Leviathan trailed off, cheeks turning a faint read. Hopefully Ophelia would take that for a sunburn.

"Thanks," replied Ophelia, smiling hesitantly. She still wasn't sure how to react to that.
"But I don't want you to get in trouble for me," she added. "Because you're already grounded and I don't think that telling your dad that you're charged with assault would go over too well, huh?" She raised an eyebrow at him and pursed her lips.
"Nah," she said, "I'll just come back some other time and get my stuff then. But didn't you say you needed a wetsuit?"
