Do you think marching band (or concert band) could be considered a "sport?"

I would say so.
Marching band is a lot of work (at least, in most cases razz ).
I spend my summers in the sweltering heat practicing and learning drill. It's tougher than most people give it credit for. My band goes through the summer's deadly heat and autumn's merciless cold (it gets bad).
At competitions, there are judges who score us. If someone steps out of bounds, points are docked. If someone is completely out of step and one of the judges notices, points are docked.
We should be considered a sport, especially since it takes a lot of coordination and teamwork to achieve even a decent show. :
P.S. My calf muscles have been worked on hardcore. It definitely gets you fit. Too bad band season only lasts until the beginning of November.

I say it is.
During my summer and fall I hardly have time to breath because I'm out there on the practice field marching. My first year was rough and I would have probobly called it more of a concentration camp then a sport (I was yelled at a lot for moving at attention. I lost count of how many laps I ran...) but this last season was a lot more sport like to me.
There are rivalries in marching band like in other sports. Your judged real hard and you have to abide by strict rules if you want to win. You have finals like other sports. You deal with sweltering and freezing practices learning drill and music. You cana get injuries through band like in other sports (I got tendinitus in my right shoulder... sweatdrop )
It should be considered a sport, sure you dont handle any sort of ball but you do carry and play an instrument. You have to memorize drill, like you have memorize plays. Its a lot of work, like any other sport. I dont know why it isnt considered a sport.

No.
I don't think an activity than involves playing a musical instrument can be considered a sport. It's more of an art.

It's an artist form- a rarity among the arts in itself.

Mirienne No. I don't think an activity than involves playing a musical instrument can be considered a sport. It's more of an art. you're not even in marching band, are you? and you're obviously not in a highly competitive one then. i know several athletes that have complimented me on how hard band must be because we practice more, longer, and harder than they do. it's an art and a sport. gymnastics is a sport, obviously, it's in the olympics. people say it's more of an activity because you have judges grading you, not by points... blahblahblah. well, as that definition states, it can definitely be considered a sport. i mean, golf's a sport and that requires hardly any physical effort. it's all strategy. might as well consider chess a sport. sorry, i was trying to show both sides that it's an art and a sport. why can't it be both?
