Zaphero reached the beach in what he thought had to be record time. He sat down on the warm sand, enjoying the familiar scent of salty water and drying seaweed, and listening to the familiar sound of waves gently lapping on the shore and the occasional seabird shouting throaty complaints to the clear blue sky. While he waited for his friend Kanani, he looked about him without rising up from his warm spot. Kanani had spoken of caves near the sea that were said to have crystals, and something about that had excited him. He had very vague memories of seeing crystals that grew in trees like fruit, but he was never certain if it was real or just a dream. Either way, it would be fun to find some; tree-growing or ground-growing, he liked the way they sparkled.

Kanani quickly ran to catch up to Zaphero. He was a pretty fast runner, especially compared to herself. When she finally got there she smiled at him. "Now to find a cave..." she commented, looking around the area. There had to be a cave somewhere. (OMG, I just remembered that I thought of doing an RP like this with another namir of mine. They went into a cave and found some crystals in a secret area they had to slide down to. =D)

((That sounds somewhat familiar; maybe I've had one like that too. XD))
Zaphero squinted and peered around, looking for any rocky outcroppings that looked like they might have a cave. Not seeing any in the immediate area, he got up and began to walk along to beach, altering his course slightly so that he was walking along the damper sand and not in the piping hot dry sand. "Hmmm.... u sulo, u sulo...." Spotting an area a ways ahead that looked rather rocky, he gestured to Kanani and began to slowly walk towards it.

Kanani followed Zaphero when he gestured to her, looking carefully at the rocky area for any especially dark places. She noted the word sulo in her mental dictionary as meaning cave while she looked. Her eyes gazed over it as they walked until it stopped on one place in particular that seemed especially dark. It was located between a boulder and the rock wall, and seemed rather suspicious. Pointing toward the location, she said, "I think I see something over there."

Blinking, Zaphero peered at the location that Kanani was pointing out, and he nodded, thinking that that area seemed like a good place for a cave. Hoping that it wasn't just the sunshine casting a great big shadow, he eagerly moved closer to the boulder. As he neared the rock wall, he felt a small splish and felt his right paw grow suddenly wet. He looked down and noticed a small puddle of clear water. He looked up and saw a thin stream pouring onto the beach from inland, winding it's way to the sea. He had a momentary vision of a sandy beach with small waterfalls of fresh water falling from the cliff rocks and pooling on the sand. Smiling, he continued forward, walking halfway between real and vision.

Kanani followed after Zaphero, though he seemed to be elsewhere mentally. She looked at the puddle of water, avoiding it in case the cave was really cold, and continued after him. Her eyes narrowed a bit as she tried to determine whether the darkness was a shadow or a cave. She really couldn't tell, though it seemed to have depth to it somehow.

With sand sticking to his damp paw, Zaphero came out of it just long enough to see that the ominous dark space was indeed a cave and not a trick of the shadows. He pointed excitedly. "Ak ij u sulo!" He broke into a run until he reached the cave, then he stopped and tride to peer into it. He could feel the cool sea air coming out of it like a breath, but the inside could only be seen for a few yards before it became pitch black. Uncertain, he looked at Kanani. "Kxo sulo ij tuhb."

Kanani agreed with Zaphero. The cave was most certainly dark. She looked at the boulder curiously before shaking her head. The boulder was blocking the sun, but it was too big for two namrah to move...or was it? Smiling cleverly, she replied, "We need to go to a forest and find a big, strong stick to bring back here."

Zaphero's pretty face crinkled in a frown at Kanani's declaration. He wanted so badly to continue on into the cave, but common sense declared that she was right; neither of tehm were going to get very far without any kind of light. He nodded a little sadly before turning and walking back the way they had come. Still, this momentary setback couldn't keep him from enjoying more of the beach scenery. He pranced about happily, enjoying the sparkling sand, the clear stream, the diamond-touched ocean water as blue as his eyes..... He sighed happily. He hadn't realized just how much he loved the beach.

Kanani took a moment to draw an 'X' into the sand, roughly to the right of the boulder. She doubted they would lose this location, but she wanted to be absolute sure. Afterward she joined Zaphero as he pranced along the sand. She had to admit that for wintertime the scenery was somehow warming and even a bit familiar to her. The beach was certainly her favorite place to be, and she liked how the sun was able to beam down on everything so easily, not being hindered by trees or anything else. Even eyes caught the sun's light and made them appear even more beautiful than normal.
Pushing such thoughts out of her mind (they were not appropriate for the situation at hand), she concentrated more on getting to the forest. Luckily it wasn't too far away, and soon enough the two found themselves within a few yards of it, the entrance through the cliffside revealed to them.

Entering the forest with more caution now that he was no longer at his favorite place, Zaphero turned all of his attention to finding a branch that would be suitable for taking back to the cave. He wanted to get back to the beach as fast as he could; it seemed as though the more time he spent there, the closer he came to remembering things that he didn't know were there to be remembered. He liked the feeling; kind of like stumbling across buried treasure that you didn't even know existed. He spied a long, thick branch sticking out from a bush, and he quickly bit down on it and pulled backwards. When he had freed it from the bush, he looked around for Kanani. Spotting her, he walked carefully over, dragging the stick in his mouth. He beamed at her and waited to see if this would be an adequate stick for them to use.

Kanani looked over the stick carefully. While she did want to go back to the beach and continue on with their adventure, it wouldn't do to have a stick too thin to do the job required. She pushed down on it a couple times, testing it's give and take, and then nodded with a smile, "Looks good enough to me. Let's go get this back to the boulder."

Beaming, Zaphero set off at a moderate pace through the woods, ever so often bumping into trunks and getting caught in bushes since he had such a large stick with him. He didn't care; every step he took, no matter how faulty, was taking him closer to his beloved beach. When he finally felt the warm sand on his paws, he increased his pace to a bound, looking for all the world like a happy puppy playing fetch on the beach. It seemed all too soon before he reached the boulder. He set the stick down carefully and looked expectantly at Kanani. "Den nxuk?" (Now what?)

Kanani followed Zaphero back toward the boulder, and said, "Now we place it under the boulder like this..." She demonstrated by accomplishing this task on her own. It was surprisingly easy, though she supposed the sand was helping. Now the stick was wedged between the boulder and the sand, the tip pointing toward the sky valiently. She walked over to it and reached up with her paws. "And now we push down to move it." She did so, yet found that the boulder was too heavy for just her strength. With Zaphero helping her she was sure that they could accomplish this task.

Zaphero blinked in surprise, then smiled in comprehension. He had thought that they were going to use the stick as a sort of torch, but now he saw that Kanani had been wanting to move the boulder so that more natural sunlight could stream in. He felt awfully silly; how would they have lit the branch anyway? To hide his embarassment, Zaphero put as much weight as he could into the stick alongside Kenani, until he felt the boulder give way. He kept at it until he saw the boulder move a considerable distance.
