"Come on, let's go to the park!" Joshua cried, dragging his mother down the sidewalk. Thali couldn't guess why Joshua was in such a hurry to get cold. Normally the boy was shy. It didn't seem like it today. "Come on! We can make a snowman!"

Rit wasn't too fond of the cold, but she wasn't all against it either. It gave her a chance to test and see if Galley had missed a few spots when she knitted the sweater she was wearing, and as the cold poked against her in a few places she had to note her sister was getting better. At least she was warm this time.

She had stopped to drink some coffee while sitting on a park bench, peering out at a wide patch of land practically overflowing with white, clean snow.

Joshua ran across the field of snow. Thali followed at a slower pace, sitting on the bench. The boy was impatient. "Come on Mommy!" He cried. "Let's play!" Thali had just gotten over a cold, so she was loath to catch another one. She turned and saw Rit.

"Hello," She said. "I'm Thali,"

Rit looked up from the field (in which a child had just run into, spoiling it) the moment a voice called out to her, and she raised her head with a smile when she knew introductions were in order.

"Ah, pleasure. Name's duShepe. Rit duShepe."

She spoke no more than needed, but it was mostly because she spoke business style as well. Introductions were always important.

"That kiddo belong to you?"

Thali smiled, "Rit then," She said. "Pleased to meet you." She paused, and looked to her son. "Yeah, he's mine. His name's Joshua." She said grinning. "Do you have children?"

"Children? No, but I do take care of my sister's kids every now and then. I'm not sure if I'd ever make a good mother so I'm not ready to try."

Rit smiled at Thali, trying to be friendly.

"Joshua is a cute name. He seems to be a handful."

Thali nodded, "I know how you feel," She said. "I felt the same way before I got Josh." She smiled at the memory. "Well...We just clicked." She paused and nodded in agreement. "He is, but he makesup for it. See-- he's especially talented with music."

"Oh? Does he play an instrument, or does he sing?"

There wasn't anyone in Rit's family with a single artful bone. Unless you counted mechanic working as assembly or something.

Thali smiled in thought. "Right now, he hums more than he sings," She said. "When we found him, he was humming. Ben's expression was priceless. We're planning on putting him in music classes, though."

Joshua looked at the two adults, as if he knew he was being discussed. Was his mom bragging again? How annoying.

"Ah, so you found him? I did think you looked a little too young to have a child, even one as small as him."

Not that Rit could talk about how people looked in terms of age when they had kids. Her niece and nephew were approaching their teens, the oldest being nine at the moment, and their mother still looked like she was in her mid-twenties despite being over forty.

"I probably would look more like a nanny or a big sister if I ever had a kid."

Thali shook her head. "I mean, when we found him when the cabbage opened." She said. "Ben wanted to surprise me and.. well, we ended up with Josh." She smiled at Rit. "You know, you would." She paused, and asked, "Do you like children?"

"A cabbage? You got a child from a cabbage?"

Rit's face paled a little and she felt a cold drop of sweat run down her back. She had a cabbage at home. One that could probably hold a child inside of it. Oh dear.

"I don't have anything against children in particular, but I was the youngest of our family so I don't know of anyone younger than me."

Thali nodded; she knew that getting a child from a cabbage might sound strange. "Yeah." She said. "A big one, mind. It wasn't like the ones you'd find in a store."

She was surprised to see Rit turn pale, but she decided not to mention it. "I was the youngest too." She said. "Well, I was adopted. I think I was my biological family's only child. I haven't been in contact with them for a long time."

"I'm the youngest of eight, and the youngest in the set of triplets. None of us were adopted, we look too much alike for that to be untrue, but I've often though my brother Jack may have been switched at birth. The boy is not right in his head sometimes."

Talk of Jack made Rit smile and frown all at the same time, her memories of him happy but tinged heavily with bitterness over what he had done.

Thali nodded in understanding. "My older brother was a little perticular," She said. "We never got along well; if we're ever in the same room,we argue." She shrugged. "What's it like coming from a large family?" She asked, curious.
