Given that we all buy and sell in the MP, how do you keep track of your profits and losses? Or maybe I should take a step back and ask if you keep track of them at all?
When I first started vending, I used to keep very close track of all my buy prices and sell prices and profit or loss. I had sheet after sheet of paper with little purple numbers written on them. (I write in purple ink almost exclusively. I like purple pens.)
After my Gaian hiatus last fall, I decided this was somewhat more obsessive than I wanted to be over a game. So right now I don't even bother to write anything down - I put everything up at a reasonable price on a two week vend, and figure I'll probably sell it for that price sometime over the two weeks. (It helps that we now have 10 vend slots, too.)
For stuff that I'm planning to sell longer term, I have a short list on paper with my buy prices. I don't even look at that much. I didn't even write on the lines.
So if you do anything, what do you do?

I really dont keep track, unless it's a item that is for investment. I'm good with numbers and math so I just keep them in my head.

I keep mental inventory of what I'm buying and how much profit I'm trying to get. I accasionally write prices on a piece of paper but that gets lost or used against me.
Sometimes for higher end items I keep the pm that tells me how much it sold.

I have a spreadsheet of my hoards, but only long-term hoards. It keeps track of quantity, price I bought it at, and target price to sell.

I've always thought it would be a good idea, but I've never kept track of my vending on paper. Part of me can't be bothered to do it, and the only reason I would write things down is so I could always later partake in the glory of my profits.
I have a good memory when it comes to my spending, and I don't usually buy too much at once, so I don't really need to keep a record. I still don't think keeping a record is obsessive... it's smart if you want to do a massive amount of vending or if you want to average the amount of gold you can make over a period of time.

Since I came back to Gaia in September, I keep track of EACH my buy and my sell. (In fact my first line begins in end of november) I note the big trades I made, Only item trade is noted as item, and big trade in a special sheet. i.e. I have still the history of the trade of my 55 letters in December
In the same file, I have 22 sheets. They are not especially trades stuff but also historic of the letters + prices, historic of the items on letters, historic of the item prices, list of all Events/Quest items, Historic of all EI's, and sheet by sheet, historic of my inventory since december smile
OOo (OpenOffice.org) is my friend. When I buy an item, I note it, and when I sell it, I put the value in the same line in the columns of buy.
Well I don't note EACH item I guess (except those I sell). But it's especially the items I buy that I'm sure to buy it for selling them after
Do you wanna have big Eyes! Here's the history track of all my big investments smile

You store log only goes back six months.

small items like letters I usually keep for a year before reselling. I buy and sell stuff direct in the mp, even 'big' items like horns/wanklets so store log is very useful to me. I have very little patience with the exchange. ^^;
