Nadia sighed and flopped down on the couch, big belly protruding from her shirt. They had spent the last three days moving in and finally, they were done. A plate of cookies and milk sat on the new coffee table and Nico took one before hopping into Mommy's lap.
"I think it's time to have a talk with the little one."

"Probably." Dax agreed. He reached over and beeped one of Nico's feet quietly.

Nico wiggled his feet and chuckled. Nadia kissed his head.
"Now, Nico. You know Uncle Dax is living with us now, right?"
"Uh-huh," Nico said, nibbling gooey cookie goodness.
"Do you know why?"
"Nuh-uh."
Nadia looked to Dax. You wanna take this one?

Dax smiled, still tickling his feet. Man, he wasn't going to be good at this sort of talking thing!
"Well, Nico." He started, voice still low, "I love your mother very much. And I want to be able to help her as much as I can." He looked up at Nadia. That okay? Dax didn't have much experience with kids!

Nico's brow furrowed. He didn't understand. He knew Uncle Dax loved Mommy. He loved her too! He looked up to Mommy.
"Well, Nico...yenno how some people have a mommy and a daddy, but you only have a mommy?"
Nico nodded.
"Dax is...Dax is your Uncle, because he's almost like a daddy. He loves your mommy like a daddy does, and he wants to help with you, and with the baby."
"...oh."
...
"Baby?!"

Dax gave a little laugh.
"Yep. Your mother says it better than I do." He said. "And, yes. Baby."

Nicolas had already gotten 'the talk', and so was incredibly confused. He furrowed his brow and pointed at Dax. Your baby? Nadia shook her head and put Nico's hand down.
"No. The man who put the baby inside Mommy isn't around any more. He was a bad man."
"...but."
"But it's still our baby. Still mine and Uncle Dax's and you're gonna be its big brother."
"Oooh."
"You'll be good to your little brother or sister, right?"
"I hope it's a sister. Then there's one of each!"
Nadia laughed. "Yep! Look, you can feel. Baby's kicking."
So she took one of Dax's hands and one of Nico's, placing them on her belly where the baby was currently flailing wildly.

Dax laughed, resting his hand on the belly. Oh noes, perhaps baby was having a nightmare!
"You'll help us take care of the baby, right, Nico." He asked, smiling at the boy.

Nico nodded, totally enraptured by the baby moving under his hand. Huh! A little brother or sister right there in Mommy's belly, cooking.
