Antony stood outside the cafe with his hands tucked into the pockets of his new dark blue trench. A soft lighter blue scarf was wrapped around his neck, keeping him warm as he waited for Delilah to show up.

She had left him a Christmas card with the words "remember your promise" sprawled sweetly across the bottom. He hadn't found it until after the Christmas party was over, thus they were having an after Christmas date. And he also had something he needed to tell her.

He wasn't looking forward to it very much.

Luckily for his extremities, Delilah proved relatively prompt and he spotted her rounding the corner at only five minutes past the meeting hour. Chances were, the extra five minutes had been spent on her appearance. As Delilah neared him with a shy, sweet smile, he had the chance to take in her dainty white boots, the stockinged legs exposed by the combination of a skirt and darkly grey-lavendar pea coat, and soft white scarf. A white beret rested at a jaunty angle atop her vibrant hair, her usual flower peeking out from the side. "I haven't kept you waiting, have I?" she asked with a hint of breathlessness.

"No, of course not," he said with a smile, holding out his hand to her. Sometimes he forgot just how gorgeous Del was, he thought as he headed inside. Then he saw her again. "You look beautiful," he told her honestly, smiling slightly. "But I hope you aren't freezing. It's a bit cold out, isn't it?"

"It is," she agreed readily. Her eyes reflected a bit of honest horror as she glanced over her shoulder to peek out the glass door one last time. "I feel like it pulls all of the color out of me but..." She paused and squeezed his hand, lacing their fingers together more firmly. "But if you still think I look pretty then I guess I'm just being silly. You would tell me if I was wilting, right, Antony?"

Now that they were out of the cold wind, though, and moving slowly in the direction of a table, she took the chance to give him a sneaky once-over as well. "You look perfect," she announced with a bit of mock sadness. "Just like always."

"Not perfect," he said. "Just in order. And you are definitely not wilting," he added as he headed for their usual table next to the flower wall. It still made his head hurt to look at it, but he ignored that fact. "Did you have a good Christmas?" he asked as he pulled her seat out for her.

"I did, thank you." She gave him and the chair an apologetic look before slender fingers quickly undid the twist of her scarf and the buttons of her coat. "Sorry," she murmured. "I don't want to leave it on and be rude." Looking around, she spotted a massive brass coat tree and smiled a bit with relief. A quick drop of her arms and she had slithered out of her coat and hung both it and her scarf up neatly. Only then did she take the offered chair, smoothing her buttery yellow skirts down. She left the white beret on and, somehow, it still worked.

"Thank you," she repeated, looking over her shoulder with a strange little grin. "Is it going to be cherry again today?" she asked sweetly.

"No, I think I'm in the mood for strawberry," he said as he undid his own coat and scarf, hanging them next to hers. "Or perhaps blueberry. But if you want cherry I won't stop you," he added with a slight smile as he sat down.

"Mmm, no." She watched him sit and leaned back a bit in her chair, reaching up to tuck a piece of her bright hair behind her ear once more. "I think blueberry sounds delicious... Did you have a nice Christmas, Antony?"

"Yes, as a matter of fact," he said with a slight grin. "Father got me this coat and scarf." Along with more dirty magazines and a hardcover version of "The Last Hero." He was torn between being thankful and irritated, but he was used to it. "And a few other things," he added. "Then we went out for dinner, because he and my uncle burnt the ham." Which was a wonder in itself, but if anyone could manage it, it was Shade and Jack.

Delilah's eyes widened and there was a mixture of amusement and horror within. Her mouth twitched as if she was fighting off a smile, though. "Oh," she finally breathed. "Oh, dear. You know, if I had known, you could have come to my house for dinner. You and Mr. Shade and your uncle. Mama always makes too much food and Uncle Kiet can only eat so much before he starts talking about how fat he's getting and the exercise he'll need to work it off." She paused delicately. "Then Mama hits him with the dish towel."

"Ah, I see," he said, equally delicately as he picked up the menu. "It's fine, we had a very entertaining time at the restaurant." He looked over the menu, more for something to do with his hands than for an idea of what to order.

"You know I told you I planned on going on vacation, remember?" he said finally.

Delilah nodded, gaze locked on him attentively even as her fingers idly fiddled with the little bow at the empire waistline of her dress. "I remember you said something about a working vacation," she answered carefully. "You didn't sound excited."

He hadn't wanted to sound too excited because she would probably think he was going off to do strange things with foreign women if he had, he thought a bit dryly. "Well I'm leaving on the thirteenth," he told her. "I'll be gone for a week. And then next month, February, that is, I'm going to start touring college campuses."

It was as good a time to tell her as any, he thought. He would have to tell everyone sooner or later.

Silence answered him and Delilah continued to stare at him unwaveringly for long moments. Then, suddenly, she dropped her eyes to the tabletop and moved her hands to lace together in front of her, resting on the table. "Oh."

Just that little sound and that was all. While a few shining pieces of hair cloaked her face, the additional fact that she had a poker face set to win millions in Vegas combined to give him nothing but a blank slate. With her eyelashes lowered, there was no hope of even searching her eyes for her reaction.

Well, he thought, the reaction could have been worse. "You see," he went on. "I need to get my bachelors degree if I plan on entering law school. I want to be a lawyer, you know." Which was purely out of his desire to make a good living. He didn't want to wind up working as a gym teacher. The very idea sent a chill down his spine.

And being an exorcist for hire was as good as being a quack psychologist in his mind.
