User ImageA modest clearing in the woods, quite similar to the one she had arrived at when she was summoned many, many nights prior. Slivers of light sheared the snow dusted canopies above. Thankfully, it was unusually warm. Droplets of water trickled to the earth below: a mixture of the deathly and the miraculously lively grass.

Amongst the snow, grass, and varieties of brush, both alive and dead, was a small fresh-water pond. It had refrained from giving into the winter's tempest, having been generously fed by three small streams throughout the season. It was there that Shaula had decided to retire, gazing upon the mirror buried within the ground.

She let out a sigh, tracing a claw over her scarred face. Her fears had been realized: the eye was worthless. Yet another heave and Shaula rose to her paws, glancing about until focusing on a plump fern. Several steps forward and she immediately recognized a slight sway in her step.

"s**t... it's worst than I thought it would be."

User Image Any other day Caden would have likely been likely cursing this weather, but for once he didn't seem to mind it so much. Perhaps it was the comforting sound of running water amongst a world of white that made him think today wasn't so bad after all. The shaggy fur on his paws had protected them for the majority of his trek, and only now were the first feelings of chill creeping into them. Amongst the quiet dripping of snow that melted ever-so-little, his feet were damp with cold water.

Shaking his shaggy mane from his eyes, the male stepped lazily around some other paw prints in the snow, making little if any sign that he had noticed them. Olive green eyes scanned the little clearing as he entered, startling a bit as his vision immediately caught sight of a brightly-hued pelt. He watched it for a moment without announcing his entrance, remembering the markings from some meeting before...

"I don't believe I ever caught your name," he started, voice quiet as to not startle her, "Though maybe I just have a bad memory?" A soft, enticing grin flashed on his face, tail swaying side to side in anticipation.

A huff escaped her: it was disheartening to know that she had lost her vision but it could have been far worst. Perhaps the same thing could have happened to her bonded. The very thought of this caused her shudder; however, it was soon shaken off as she yelped with a start. A vaguely familiar drawl of a voice played at her chiming ears.

"Dear god..." she gasped, whipping about to take the Winiko into her line of vision, "You scared me. I-I didn't think anyone else was out here."

It was only than did she realize her predicament: awkwardly clamoring about in an attempt to test out her vision. In addition, the severity of her injury seemed to pang at her sense of pride. Lifting a paw rather hastily, she batted at her mane, hoping it to appear that she was dislodging some snow free from the golden tresses when in actuality she was hiding away her fissure like scars.

"Sorry," he replied rather sheepishly, diverting his eyes for just a moment, "Didn't mean to scare you like that." He looked back to her, having just completely missed her attempt to hide the scars across her face. Shaking his head, he ruffled his own mane and loosened it from his shoulders. Oblivious as far as most things go, the male took no notice of anything at all that was wrong with the other. (( Typical. Cx ))

"I... didn't think I'd find anyone else out this way," he started casually, flipping his bangs out of his head with a swift movement of his head, "It's a little bit out of the way from where I live, but I found this place once before. Pretty nice, if I do say so myself." He lifted a paw from its bed of frozen moss and worked his way a bit further around the pool, stopping once to take a drawn out drink of water. It was cold in his throat, testament that eyes could be deceiving in a place like this.

"Any reason you're way out here?"

Relief cascaded over her in an instant. He had been entirely oblivious to her disfigurement. Though she knew she earned the scars valiantly, she still felt some sort of embarrassment. Perhaps it was just the notion of being a proud beast of mythical origin... or perhaps it was because the roles had been reversed in that one instant: her bounded had shouldered the role as the savior.

Ceasing her speculation, she once more focused her attention on the rather lax Winiko. With a tilt of her head, Shaula took a quick glance about her surroundings.

"I come here to clear my head. It reminds me of the place that I was summoned," she began, nodding as if affirming her answer, "It's been rather... chaotic at my home as of late."

A sheepish expression had befallen over her coral hued maw. Once more she was unable to reveal her true intentions in such an off the beaten path location. Shame... that was what this sensation was called.

Well, she seemed fine enough, at least; Caden was never much for reading real emotions in others, after all. He flipped his hair from his face again and shifted his weight, tail swaying as a soft breeze pushed through the surrounding trees from elsewhere and brushed past the pair of winiko.

"As good a reason as any," he replied simply with a shrug, "Where I am it's always hectic and loud, so most of us spend our days out and about to escape it all. I give my bonded credit, I do. I don't know what we'd all do without her, really."

Realizing he was probably rambling, Caden shifted his attention to the bits of blue sky peeking out between the bare, spindly branches of maple and oak and the thickly covered boughs of pine trees. His paws carried him at a slow stroll around the edge of the pool, careful not to venture too close and fall in. "Though, yes, I still don't know your name." A smile was offered to her, teeth flashed in an earnest grin. "Unless you really just don't want to tell me~"

A kindred spirit born of chaos and noise. To a degree, this brought about a sense of familiarity. Yet, on further reflection, Shaula knew that with the inheritance of Winiko blood, chaos was an omnipresent presence that refused to wane despite the circumstances. A snicker, once more she had dove into her own subconscious of literature and philosophy. How easy it was for her to delve into the intangible. Perhaps it was this tendency that resulted in a degree of awkwardness about others.

Thankfully, the gentle breeze that had caressed the limbs of the vegetation about them also acted as an agitator about her many piercings. This small shift in the world about her sprang her back to the conversation at hand.

"Name?... Oh, oh right. I don't believe I ever did tell you, now did I?" She nodded thoughtfully, turning to better observe the moss-toned Winiko before her, "I'm Shaula, and yourself?"

The male did, however, note her silence; it was partially that which kept him talking for that little while. It was either that, or... there was something about her that he couldn't quite place that made him feel he could just let go. There was no flaunting and showing off that needed to be done right now, only the quiet subtlety of conversation.

Hnn, quiet. How ironic.

"Shaula...." he pondered her name for a moment and nodded, making sure to commit it to memory. "I'm Caden," he replied, bowing his head a bit to her as a greeting. "It's a pleasure."

He lifted his head back and swung it a bit, flipping his bangs out of his eyes. He watched her for a moment, finally taking note of the very edges of the scars that marred her face. His chest tightened, but he managed to smoothly avert his gaze into the shimmering pool. He wanted to ask, he wanted to... he just couldn't make himself do it.

"Caden?" she murmured, allowing it to roll over her tongue. It was a unique name. One that she had not heard prior to this encounter. Moreover, the amiable nature of her new acquaintance would likely ensure her remembering it for quite some time.

Gently she lowered her head so that she may bow. A common courtesy she had been taught long ago by her now estranged parents. One of the few tokens that she treasured of far less turbulent times. Lifting her amber eyes to once more meet Caden's, she tilted her head ever so slightly. An inquiry had come to mind.

"You mentioned your home being quite chaotic. Is that why you've ventured off so far from home? This isn't exactly an easily accessible alcove."

Despite her previous endeavors, her change in posture unveiled the severity of her wounds. For better or for worst, she had allowed herself to acclimate herself to this individual; however, at what expense?
