Nadia was terribly embarrassed when they walked into the doctor's office. She was bloated to the point of an inflation fetish and everyone smiled and gave her strange looks before whispering to their families about God-knows-what. She was glad her Daxy was here, and glad that her Daxy didn't care who looked at them. She filled out the new forms, paid her copay, and sat back down in one of the uncomfortable waiting room chairs.
"I'm nervous."
Her belly roiled again, reminiscent of the night after bad Mexican.

Daxy did indeed not care about anyone who stared. He sat beside her and patted her hand.
"Don't worry. I'm here for ya." He said softly, voice low.

"What if it's something awful like cancer or a chest-burster?" Nadia sighed. She was honestly afraid and attempted to cover it up with half-hearted jokes.
"Miss Miller?"
Nadia looked around to make sure the nurse in the doorway wasn't calling someone else. No other women moved. Nadia stood, holding Dax's hand in a death-grip, and followed the nurse in.

Dax followed her, giving her hand a little reassuring squeeze. Doctors offices were new to him, but he wasn't going to show any sort of fear.
"Whatever it is," He murmured. "I'll be here for you."

Nadia lead Dax into the room and nodded at the nurse's 'the doctor will be with you shortly'. Only then did she kiss Dax.
"Thank you, honey. It means a lot to me."
Her parents didn't know yet, as far as she knew. Granted, the paparazzo had been all over her. Her little Tibbyface would keep quiet if she saw it, though. She was a smart girl. They should meet Dax face-to-face soon. They would like him.
The man who entered next in full doctor regalia was nothing but a standing wolf; the type people fantasied about being when they were uncomfortable with their lives. He tossed his thatch of purple head-hair (perhaps different than his fur, perhaps not) and pushed his glasses up his muzzle.
"Nadia. ...this is..."
"I know, it's bad."
She trusted this man with her life.

Dax gently squeezed her hand again, looking up to the doctor. He was a quiet man when not in his element, and thus waited to be told with her.

"Please take off your shirt," Doctor Viluchek asked, his vague European accent making everything sound deadly. Nadia took off her shirt and laid back, still holding Dax's hand. The doctor moved around it, snapping on a pair of gloves and palpating Nadia's belly.
"I feel a definite mass in either your lower intestine or uterus."
Nadia's heart knotted. No, not cancer...!

And that brought another hand squeeze. Dax leaned over quietly, kissed her brow. He was there for you, Nadia!

Nadia's eyes welled up and her brow furrowed. She was scared, and her body was reacting in a very, very girly way.
"We should do an ultrasound to determine the shape and size of the mass."
"Okay."
"Come with me."
Nadia put her shirt back on and released Dax's hand for the first time. She gave him a sad look, though, as if begging him to follow.

Nadia took her shirt off again and laid down as Doctor Viluchek gooed up her belly and put on a few electrodes. The doctor ran the sensor of the ultrasound over Nadia's stomach, and she felt it move again. She closed her eyes and turned away.
The 'mass' on the ultrasound was unmistakable.

Dax's reaction?
He leaned forward, tried to count fingers. Tried to see what parts of the baby could be seen through the ultrasound.
He didn't react in any horrible way, screaming about how the kid wasn't his. He just had quiet interest.

One, two, three, four, five! The baby sucked on its thumb.
"Ah..." the doctor mused, "Nadia?"
Nadia turned and looked. At first, she wasn't sure what she was seeing, as if it was not actually her belly. Then she looked down, and it was. The baby moved, and she felt a shift. But...she and Dax had never had sex! In fact, she hadn't had sex since...
"No...nonono."

"It's all right." Dax said softly, his first words in a while. "It looks healthy..." Five little fingers, hopefully another five on the other hand. It looked like a little person!

"No. No it's not," Nadia said, tears sliding down her cheeks. She sat up, ripping the electrodes from her belly and wiping off the goo with her shirt.
"No, Dax. It's not alright."
She stomped out, nearly running, in her bra and pants.
