User Image The green and brown splotched jackal felt invigorated. It was as if he had been asleep for months and now, finally, the spell that had put him down was lifted. Free to do what he wanted, he decided he needed a bit of trouble to rid himself of all this pent up energy. The devilish, handsome little creature slid through the tall grasses easily, hardly rustling the brown blades as he stealthily looked around for some sort of target.

He was the kind of guy that never liked to be bored. A thrill junky, of any sort, he did what he had to in order to keep his adrenaline pumping. It didn't matter what: he had many different 'missions' in his head. Sometimes he contented himself by coming up with strange ways to hunt, like setting traps or adding extra difficulties to his hunts that, ultimately, wouldn't be there save for his own design. Other times he occupied his mind with a different kind of lust, not for adventure, but for the classical sense of the word. Now, however, he was not hungry nor in the company of a female.

So he had to come up with something else.

He spotted something in the distance, a large animal of some kind, and grinned. He couldn't yet tell what the other creature was doing, but he drew himself quietly closer, dragging his belly across the ground in a crawl. Maybe, if a chance presented itself, he might find something reckless, dangerous, or fun here. Or maybe a combination of all three.

What the creature was doing was pawing at a dead rat. With his rising boredom, he found delight in tormenting the smaller creatures that roamed the earth, leaving them dead to rot. He didn't care much for them as all they were, were little pests intent on ruining his day. So what did they deserve? To die. To perish under his paw as he crushed them, and made them bleed. No, he didn't eat them. What was the point of eating them if all they did was give him a bellyache? He could go and capture some bigger animals to eat. Their meat would be richer, and would satisfy his craving. These little creatures obviously didn't. Who would try digesting those disgusting little creatures?

Thoko yawned. There was nothing to do. Nothing that could catch his interest, or give him something to torment. He was, truly, growing tired, a rare sight for the twisted male who hardly slept. The truth was was that he preferred night over day. He often slept during the day, but usually stayed up during the day. It was rare for him to break a record of staying up all day. Or two days, in a row...

Now, if he was listening, he would have been able to detect the slightest amount of movement coming from behind him.

But, unfortunately, he wasn't expecting any type of creature to come running at him, and if he did, he would defiantly be ready. So, with much delay, he set his head down and prepared to drag into sleep. He would need it if he planned on attacking another tonight.

He would defiantly need his energy...

Lazarus slowed. He came to a stop when he saw that the creature was a rather large lion, and that he was engaged in some sort of activity that didn't look all that entertaining. Or active, really. Careful, the jackal drew closer, inexorably, moving at a glacier's pace until he was able to spot the dead rat, yet remain downwind.

Blinking, he tensed as the lion settled down for a nap, apparently. He didn't know what to do. Sure, he loved a thrill, but there was no way he was going to jump a lion. That was almost literally like walking up to death, poking it on the shoulder, and asking it to take him for a ride. It certainly would have been fun, though.

So he circled around the big form to sit at his head, a good enough distance away that he wasn't within immediate snapping range. He patted his fluffy tail against the earth, tilting his head to one side, then cleared his throat and hummed a song. It was a pointless, near melody-less song that had no artistic quality to it. It was, ultimately, just a bunch of random notes forced out of his throat.

Yet he hummed it with zeal, grinning so the sound escaped through his sharp fangs. He laughed before he was finished, arching an expressive eyebrow at the lion that was, he imagined, probably going to eat him.

"Taking a nice nap, handsome?" he said, as if waking him up weren't bad enough.

Thoko wasn't nearly as tired as he thought he was. Though he contemplated on letting himself wake, he heard the world deafen around him while he thought. Slowly, he dozed off as his mind filled with images of slaughter. Of taking what was protective, and ripping it apart, of hearing the terrible cries of agony and more bloodshed. Screams of terror mixed with laughter.

Which, in any strange way, was cut off as a disturbed humming filled his visions. The humming mixed in perfectly with the visions, and he thought of it as nothing more than something in his dreams. But he was wrong. The humming, as strange as it sounded, was getting louder, and more realistic. His dreams were fading. The humming remained.

He heard a voice in the-ending darkness. It was what brought him back to the world.

He wasn't alarmed, though, and he never showed it. The large male kept his eyes shut and never made any initial movement, grateful that the creature, whoever, had woken him up. "A rather peaceful sleep, mind you."

Peeking one eye opened, he looked towards the creature with a calm look towards his expression, hiding the rage that was, frighteningly, close to leaving him. "I say, you don't have manners, I suppose."

Lazarus bristled. The green mottled jackal was not interested in getting himself eaten, and he knew a bad situation when he stepped into one, and, despite the calm look he was getting from the lion, he knew there was something dangerous lurking in those eyes. His smile faded and he looked around. No one was near by. Not that he was expecting anyone he knew to just pop in and spirit him away.

But it would have been nice.

"Manners?" He echoed, eyes going distant as he scanned his memory banks for the definition to that word. He focused on the lion again, grinning devilishly, "nope, don't know them. But if I see some, I'll be sure to bring them back for you."

He grinned, always a fan of his own humor. It was funny, regardless of if anyone else was laughing. Tail wagging, the jackal sniffed at the air cautiously, eyes flicking from the lion to his surroundings and back to the lion. He wasn't nervous, just observant. He wanted to make sure he knew what was available to him, just in case he had to improvise.

"I just thought you looked a bit too comfortable, is all," he lied breezily, "what can I say? I'm a helpful creature."

Thoko smirked. Somehow, he liked the way this serval acted. If not for the fact he reminded him somewhat of himself, or something else, he found a certain growing fondness in him despite the hot rage beneath his fake disguise. It would have been nice to approach the serval in another way than just acting like a butler serving a very spoiled princess.

It took him a long time to actually answer to the serval. He was unsure whether or not to respond to him, thinking that just getting up and leaving was the best medicine for this game of disguise and suspicion. Their game had already progressed to a point where walking away might be cowardly though. His anger wouldn't be healed so easily either. He sighed, looking off into the distance as his eyes blinked several times before he even opened his maw to say anything. "A helpful creature indeed," he paused, pondering his next set of words. "but don't you think interrupting someone, especially a lion, is a bad idea? If I wasn't so polite, I could have jumped up and smashed you where you stood now."

Having the serval bloodied on the floor sounded like a good idea. He wasn't sure why, but it just sounded good to do. Carefully he sat up and looked down at the serval, silent for another few minutes as he attempted to regain his mind again from the short cat-nap he had attempted to have. "But I'll never do that. I don't like to hurt others, such as yourself," a lie that could be hard to believe. If the serval knew how close he came to just sitting on him, he might flee in fear.

Another smirk grew on his maw. He had managed to forget all the past anger before. That was... good. Or so it seemed.

Lazarus seemed to grow more comfortable as the threat increased. He watched as the lion considered his response. If it was unfavorable, the jackal knew he had only a short amount of time to get the hell out of there. But if he knew anything, he knew he was fast. Lightning fast. He nodded to himself, confident. Yes, his speed made him the lightning.

Though, the slow way the lion was moving, with the blinks and the silence, wasn't much of a tension builder. The jackal looked around lazily, tail flicking.

"Nah, I don't think that at all. There are no real bad ideas, because at the time they're thought up they could all, theoretically, be good. It's just turn of events that make them bad. In a different place, on a different day, that same idea could turn out well. Right? Or something like that."

He grinned.

"Pretty glad about you being polite, though. Being smashed isn't on the itinerary for the day." He didn't really believe the lion when he said he didn't like hurting others. In fact, his fur bristled in an unsettling way that told him to keep the complete opposite in mind. This guy would probably enjoy ripping him in two, "I'm not a fan of violence. I'm more of a word guy. Lazarus is the name, in case you were wondering."

Thoko could honestly tell that Lazarus was a speedy one by the way he acted. The jackal carried an edge that was dulling as they spoke, as if being lazy like he was now was bringing the more lazy side out of him. That was good. If he did plan on attacking him, he would need to be more friendly than he normally did, and that wasn't a problem in his current position.

After all, he had patience. He could wait a little longer, even if that meant the sun going down before him.

"Ah, you have interesting beliefs. I like them, never have heard of them before, though. Everyone is afraid of bad ideas. They never think of them as good or excellent ideas, just fearful ones that are horrid. I have always wondered why many mistake tragedies as well... tragedies. I doesn't seem quite right."

Good ideas and bad ideas. What was the difference? If you said the word wrong than someone might flip their lid. You couldn't speak bad about it, or the option of events might become quite bad in a situation.

The situation was a scenario for now, actually. He eyed his paw, grinning.

He chuckled. "I'm not a fan of violence either, really. I doubt being smashed would be pleasant." Lying. It was fun. "Nice to meet you Lazarus, I am Thoko."

Lazarus listened, tilting his head. He hadn't meant to be too philosophical, and he wondered vaguely if he was being messed with. Really, he didn't doubt it very much. After all, there was that sense in the air still, that told him to stay on guard, but not be edgy. It was dangerous, but fun, and he was intent on exploring it as far as he could, before it got too rough.

"Thoko," Lazarus repeated, as if tasting the word, "solid name. Hard consonants, you know. Gives you a sense of power, even just introducing yourself. My name is all languid and disarming. Nothing to fear, and not much for building any kind of reputation behind."

He tilted his head.

"So, does your name suit you? Do you have a reputation around you, that I'm not away of? And probably should be? I get that feeling. You look like you want to eat me. I'm pretty sure I don't taste very good, though."

Thoko silently cursed himself for being as open as he was being. Unfortunately, he already took guess in the sway of emotions that appeared in his eyes. A bright anger probably hid behind his blue eyes, ruining his composition of being polite and starting up a conversation before attacking someone. He never dared on letting his emotions get the better of him when he was in situations such as these and he wondered if his skill was becoming dull. Had he slacked off from the game he played so often? It was a great question that he would ponder on in better circumstances where he wasn't left with a person awaiting an answer, and better circumstances they were he thought with a quirk of his brow.

Though as suddenly as Lazarus had spoken a barrier immediately appeared in his mental mind, putting him on such an edge he kept himself from grounding his teeth together. One thing he disliked was the power his name had carried, a power he dared not dwell on. People did comment on the way his name sounded 'powerful' or 'dangerous'. How was his name dangerous? It was a simple name that carried no more significance than anyone else's name. If anyone could figure out the history of him, than they too might not understand his name.

He didn't have much time left before this game was over, really. By the tension that hung heavily in the air it would only be a few more moments before one of them snapped. Hopefully it wouldn't be him.

"I doubt my name suits me. My mother named me under awkward circumstances," he shook his head to emphasize that statement. "I doubt she knew what she was naming me, but I heartily say that this name carries no significance to my life, my history. It may sound dangerous, yet I am not as dangerous as I may seem."

And he wouldn't eat you. Ha.

The sharp little jackal watched as the much larger animal consider his answer. He was taking some mental notes, though his expression wasn't even slightly curious. He wore an easy smile, head canted to one side casually, his ears perked forward in interest. This was certainly an interesting encounter. Though, he was beginning to see the difference in being clever and being smart.

Lazarus didn't really have the firmest grip on the latter.

"Well, that's good. Though, every lion is dangerous in one way or another, even if they're the nicest thing in the world. Particularly for little guys like me. You would have to do little more than squish me under your paw and be done with it. Not that I'd like you to do that. Ignore the suggestion there," he laughed jovially, shaking his head.

Drawing a breath, feeling an unfamiliar sense of fleeting anxiety, he grinned and shrugged his small shoulders.

"I guess I should be getting back to the trail."

Thoko felt himself nod. He was more lost in his thoughts at the moment. The time was drawing near, and if he didn't finish this than this jackal surely would. What was he doing? By now he would have already attacked Lazarus. He honestly had no patience like he thought he did. It was all in his head. Yet, by the looks of it he found himself wishing this jackal would go already.

He didn't want to hurt him, and he felt happier that way.

And this one knew too much. He already suspected that Lazarus knew where this could be going. "True," he murmured. "everyone is mean in their own way."

Bringing himself back from his thoughts he chuckled quietly. "I wouldn't do that. Not in a million years! You're an interesting fellow, Lazarus. I'll admit. I'm at a lose of words over it, too."

Now hurry up and go.

He crawled in his skin.

"I suppose you should," his tail flicked back towards the trail. "and I guess this is goodbye." A smile. A genuine one, too.

A rare one.

Lazarus nodded, wagging his tail behind him slowly. This certainly had been fun, in a way that had never lost its dangerous edge. He grinned when the other smiled, feeling a creeping sensation move down his spine and not knowing if he was supposed to enjoy it or take heed of it.

"I'll see you again sometime, if my wandering path brings me your way again," he blinked, tilting his head thoughtfully, "or maybe not. Either way, it was a good conversation. Bye, Thoko!"

He turned and padded off, half expecting a paw swipe after him. But only half. This was something he was going to remember, and think about, and that was good. He rarely had interesting things to do. At least this would keep his mind occupied for a while yet.

Still grinning, he made his way back to his aimless, ever incomplete wandering with a strange, new feeling in his chest.
