Whatever doesn't kill you, simply makes you . . .

I have lately been thinking about starting ballet again. I took ballet when I was little, but I now regret ever stopping. I'm prepared for the work that comes with ballet, though I may never be able to dance professionally. I'm just a little self-conscience about my body structure. I'm worried about being too tall and too big. I know I'm not fat, just curvy. I'm 5'7 and I've got the full-fledged hour glass shape, and I'm nervous about dancing with tiny girls and also how I will look in a leotard. The instructor said to catch up a little bit, I'll need to be in a class with younger students, but she also said that there will be 14 and 15 year olds in there too (I'm 16). If you have any suggestions, that would be wonderful!!

Go for it! Who cares what those other girls think? Focus on doing what you love, and hopefully things will fall into place. I'm not sure how you look, but there is a possibility that you will just blend in with the older girls, and no one will know what age you are anyway. (I can't usually tell the difference between a 14 year old and a 16 year old, especially if they are all wearing homogeneous outfits!)

Also, as long as you have a bright and happy attitude and are kind and caring, I bet the younger students may start looking up to you in an affectionate way.

dancing is a personal thing. don't do it for them, do it for you.
don't worry about how you look. just focus on doing it.
i threw away my chance at a professional career because i was self conscious, and quit when i was at the height of my ability.
3 years later i'm fighting to get it all back. i may not make it professionally, and i'm also not a ballet body (can't dance without bra, big hips and thighs, 5'9"), but i love dancing so i'm working my butt off (literally) trying anyway.
don't give up on it just because you feel awkward about your body.
start dancing again and your body will change anyway.

and like antlers says, the younger girls will look up to you.
i dance one level lower than where i was when i quit, and the younger girls actually told me that they look up to me, and that i'm their role model.
it's rewarding in more ways than one.

I am 18 and in a class with 10 year olds.
Honestly, I only remember when I stop to think about it.
If you want to start dancing again DO IT.
I wanted to start ballet forever, and now I finally can!(my family couldn't afford it, but now I have my own job) It was weird for the first month or so, but any unfamiliar situation is uncomfortable for the first little while.

Deffinatly go for it.

Sounds like you have the same type of body as me. All the girls in my acadamy were jealous of my figure, actually. So don't be self concious, be proud! You don't know what the other girls are /really/ thinking. xD

Don't give it a second thought, I've never had the tiny dancer body but I've always danced. You let me know how that restarting goes, since I entered college I've essentially been on break for two years and hope to restart sometime and trust me I'll be over 20 and not caring how old the girls are in my class even if I'm with the 12 year olds because I love to dance it shouldn't matter how old the other kids are or even if you like them or not ^.^

I say do what you love to do. I started ballet relatively late at 14 so i went back to RAD grade 4 with the 9 year olds and worked my way back up. As to the body image, don't worry about it. For a dancer i'm build with a stack of overbuild muscle in my legs and broad shoulders thanks to years of swimming training plus since i took a 5 yr break from dance i managed to score a flabby stomach as well. So i'm pretty much pear shaped but i dance with a bunch of 15-17 yr olds and manage to keep up with them (as well as lose some of the flab in the process). They look up to me and turn to me for help with technique and dance recitals so regardless of the fact that i am now 24 and the oldest in my dance school i still have a lot of fun and plan to continue dancing til my body breaks down on me!! So have fun, return to doing what you love and enjoy every minute of it!
