"Fly, fly, fly!" Sid shouted as his boots pounded across the cold, hard ground. Behind him trailed a cheap plastic kite, and even further behind that came Lex, carrying a sleeping Liam. They were on their way to do sedate things like drink hot chocolate and look at any big city holiday decorations that hadn't yet been taken down, but until they started either of those things, Sid would run and Sid would fly a kite in the dead of winter.

" 'M hungry" Winona whined stomping her tiny hooves against the tarmac and swishing her tail in agitation " Hungry" She repeated for emphasis.
Samantha sighed and double clicked the electronic lock on her car to make sure it was safe from burglars, they were still rampant this time of year as people did boxing week sale shopping. " Winona you ate just before we left it's only been a half hour you can't be hungry again." It wasn't possible even newborns that were nursing weren't hungry that soon. Samantha assumed the girl wanted attention and was using the few words she knew to get it.

Up ahead, Sid spotted a tiny two-legged cow, and if that wasn't reason enough for him to stop and stare, nothing was. His kite fluttered to the ground, and when he started walking again, it dragged across the pavement. "Moooooo," he said under his breath as he approached, and he might have made it all the way over to moo in the tiny cow's face if he hadn't felt a hand drop onto his head, stopping him in his tracks.
"Sid," Lex said. "What are you doing?"
"Gonna say hi to the cow," Sid explained, bouncing on the balls of his feet.
Lex looked over at the stomping toddler. "Okay, you can say hello. But she's not a cow. Be nice." He let go and Sid rushed forward, stopping well away from Winona and her guardian.
"Hi!" he said. "I have a kite!"

Winona looked at the weird thing in front of her and then at the thing it was dragging on the ground. As far as she could tell a Kite wasn't all that interesting. Still she clicked his fingers together as she watched it and the boy " Can you eat it?" That might be nice, food you could take with you.
Samantha leaned against her car and watched with interest as her daughter experienced her first other child.

"Nah. Would taste pretty bad," Sid said, shaking his head. He considered himself a master of many things, including yummy ones, and a kite was distinctly non-yummy. He dragged the kite over to his feet and picked it up, offering it to Lex with a blind shove behind him. Luckily his caretaker was there to grab the scuffed toy, only slightly jostling his own charge in the process. Liam slept on, one of his four thumbs jammed in his mouth.
"There has food," Sid said, pointing a long finger at the mall. "Me an' Uncl'lexis are getting hot choclatt to drink." He smiled, displaying his sharp little teeth. "It's good."

Soft brown eyes flicked from the green boy to the sleeping one and back again totally ignoring the adult involved. If they were going to get something that tasted good she wanted to go too . "Me too" she said firmly and turned to stare at her mother " Hot choclatt, yes."
Samantha shrugged , why not if it would get the girl to co-operate than it couldn't hurt. She needed Winona in a good mood for the day since they'd be spending most of it shopping. Having been wholly unprepared to brings child into her home the woman had a lot of things to buy.
" Do you mind if we join you, or just follow you briefly" She asked of the man identified as Lexis.

"Yes!" Sid turned and began marching toward the mall, confident that Lex would turn him around if he was heading in the wrong direction. "C'mon!"
"Not at all," Lex assured the woman. "My name is Lex," he said, "And that's Sid and this is Liam," he continued, indicating the children.

Winona grinned an trotted forwards to keep up with the green skinned boy, her tail swinging behind her lazily as she was now content. " What choclatt taste like." Knowing it was good was nice but knowing more was better. would it be sweet like honey or bland like lettuce or weird and tingly like the stuff on lettuce.
I"m Samantha" the woman introduced herself " That's Winona." She looked carefully at the sleeping Laim. " Is he ok?"

"It tastes squooshy. Like a little brown frog," Sid said happily. "You see. It's real good." He opened the door by pushing on the glass instead of the handle and held it for Winona, since he didn't know if cows knew how to use doors. Inside, lights sparkled from fake light poles and people bustled around, carrying bags of on-sale merchandise. Sid might have tried to continue on without guidance, but he really wanted hot chocolate now. He turned to look at Lex who pointed off to the right.
"He's fine, really," Lex answered, smirking a bit at Samantha's question. "He gets upset when I leave him with someone, but he doesn't do much during the day except sleep, so here he is. I should probably buy a..." he made a pushing motion with the hand that held the kite, "...carriage, but he's so big it might be weird." No weirder than carrying around a five-year-old all day, but Lex hadn't quite come to that conclusion yet. "I'll wake him up for the food."

As Winona walked inside she wondered what the heck a frog ?. She still didn't know what choclatt tasted like but she supposed she'd have to trust this boy the same way she trusted her mother. Again she clicked each set of her three hard ended fingered together purely to hear the sound.
Samantha nodded slowly, certainly sounded like a strange kid but who was she to comment after all as far as she could tell Winona appeared from a Bison someone set on fire. She wasn't innately quirky as far as the woman could tell but she certainly wasn't normal either. " Would you like me to carry that?" she asked pointing to the kite. Purse slung comfortable over her shoulder Samantha's hands were free.

Sid held his arms out like a plane and jogged forward toward Harry's Hot Chocolate and Eclair Cafe. He could see the sign up ahead... somehow... but mostly he could smell it. "Hot! Choclatt!" he chanted, hopping toward the door and posing with his arms still outstretched when he got there.
"Thank you," Lex said, handing over the kite, for a moment at least. "And I insist on paying for whatever you and Winona want." It had been Sid who had dragged the other child along with him, and Lex thought it was the least he could do. Actually, Lex imagined the least Sid's guardian's money could do was buy this woman a private island, but that was beside the point. Roxanna could certainly afford a couple of cups of hot chocolate.

Winona followed a safe distance behind Sid, a bit worried about being smacked in the head by his arms. Flaring her nostrils a little the Bison girl breathed in heavily the scent coming from the store and smiled. It was different from the cooking last night but it still smelled good.
Samantha didn't think she deserved anything special or free just for holding a kite but she wasn't one to turn down a strangers hospitality either. " Thanks," She smiled softly and held the Kite carefully.

Lex nodded and positioned himself at the end of the line. He hefted Liam a little higher on his hip, then gently placed the sleepy, empty-eyed boy on the ground next to him. "What does everyone want?"
Sid rubbed his chin thoughtfully while he stared up at the list of drinks he couldn't read. "Hot choclatt," he said in a Very Serious Voice. It was ordering time. He couldn't afford to be misunderstood. Liam nodded shallowly in agreement.

Winona flicked her ears trying to listen to all the conversations going on in the cafe at once. It didn't really work as as she got were fragmented strings of words she didn't really know. When asked what she wanted the young bison girl listened to Sid's order and repeated it not having any clue what else she could possibly have wanted.
Spotting a glass covered rack filled with something that smelled nice Winona broke her spot in line and toddler over to press her face against the glass as much as her nose woulds allow. Breathing heavily she quickly fogged the glass much to the displeasure of someone working behind the counter.
Samantha shook her head but said nothing, the girl was just a kid fresh to the world and exploring it. " Hmm I think I'd like a medium hot chocolate with whipped creme and a small eclair" She could split that with Winona once they sat down or were walking again whichever happened.

Lex ordered the drinks and things everyone had requested and something for himself, then after a few minutes of standing around waiting for everything to be prepared, he picked up his order and quickly handed down some cups to the kids in his care before offering the rest to Samantha.
Sid, who had occupied himself by standing on one foot and watching Winona fog up glass, eagerly grabbed his cup, but didn't drink yet. He had learned the hard way that hot chocolate was hot, and he felt the need to impart this wisdom. "It's hot," he said to anyone who was listening. "That's why it's got that in the name."
"Do you mind if we walk around some?" Lex asked. He didn't have any particular time he had to return with Sid, but his boss had given him a list of things to do and sadly, looking at decorations wasn't one of them. Still, Lex thought decorations were something a child should see.
