“Daddy?” The small black dog called quietly slipping from the sleeping mass that he called his siblings and stumbling towards the brown dog that was his father. “Why are you and mamma splitting?” He asked tilting his head and keeping his tone hushed. He knew he wasn’t supposed to know yet but he hadn’t been able to sleep and when neither of his parents returned to their sleeping children he wandered off in search of them.
He had heard the whole conversation. Almost all of it.
“Why did mamma say that she “loved the idea of you”?” Amirite questioned not understanding the situation at all. He was confused and had ever right to be.
“We have different ideas for the future. We feel that we should go our separate ways.” Jachai replied patting his son upon the head lightly. He shook his head as a sigh slipped from his lips. No one was supposed to know yet, not until they had the chance to talk about the situation with all of them. Of course Amirite had always been curious and had seemingly inherited his mother’s insomnia.
“I don’t understand.”
“I don’t expect you to Amirite, it’s complicated.”
He replied with a shrug letting his paw drop. He didn’t want to talk about it; he didn’t want to show his young son that he was happy, happy to no longer be bonded to Spade.
How the hell could he explain that to the young male before him?
He simply couldn’t.
“I’m sorry, it’ll be difficult but you’ll get used to it, with time. “ He stated smiling faintly. “Who knows you might like it, especially if your mother finds herself a good mate.” He smirked at the thought. “You’d have more than just me and your mother, you’d have another parent who would probably spoil you rotten.”
The pup wrinkled his nose not sure that he approved of what he was being told. It sounded rather ridiculous to him. What child would be happy that their parents would be splitting?
Only a crazy one…of course it did seem to have pluses. And if it made his parents happy…
No!
He shook his head trying to force the thoughts from his mind. Mammas and Daddies were supposed to stay together! Not separate!
How were they supposed to be happy when they made themselves alone?
It simply didn’t make sense to him!
“I don’t like it.” He stated clearly wrinkling his nose again as though the thought disgusted him.
“Mammas and Daddies are supposed to stay together.” He told his father with a firm nod. “Why would they want to separate?” He asked his brows furrowing as his features twisted in confusion.
“Because they’re unhappy.”
Jachai replied sadly getting a distant look in his eyes. Why did he have to be such a smart child! Obviously he took more after Spade than himself.
“Do you want us to be unhappy Amirite?”
“N….no…but can’t you be happy together?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Oh.”
His ears flattened against his skull as he frowned troubled by Jachai’s words. “If you don’t stay together what’s gonna happen to us?” He asked looking to the ground.
“You can go with whomever you chose. Either way you’ll see both of us. Not often but occasionally.” He replied a smile gracing his lips as he began to relax. It seemed like the boy understood things better now.
“Oh.”
He seemed to be disgruntled with that information. He was supposed to chose? “Can I change my mind after I decide?”
“Of course.”
“Good.”
The little black dog replied his own goofy, wolfish grin spreading across his lips. “Imma stay with you for now okay?”
“Of course.”
