So yeah. We just got the CD's back of our last marching performance. Every year, at the end of marching season, we do a concert in the gym called Instant Replay. We perform the songs from all of our shows.

So we just got the CD's back, and I was eager to listen to it, because I thought we had at least played pretty well at Instant Replay compared to the rest of the season.

Well. If Instant Replay was better than the rest of the season, I don't think I want to hear how we played the rest of the season. It was terrible. The drums sped everything up, they messed up the cadences, the verbals were terrible, and it sounded like us tubas were dragging through the whole thing.

Anyway. I wanted to cry when I heard it, not just when I heard how bad the verbals were during the cadences, but ESPECIALLY when I heard how bad Hey Baby was.

Anyone else ever had that happen? You get a recording of a performance...and it's terrible? Discuss.

Well, the recordings of our shows sound pretty bad. There's only one dynamic mic on the field, so it basically picks up whatever instrument is closest at the time. The brass especially sounds bad. But the recordings of our pregame concerts are much better.

I guess that's not really the same thing, though? xD

Usually it's the marching part that I notice as being bad on (video) recordings...

All our recordings in high school were pretty terrible...there were serious balance issues (for instance, 45 flutes vs. 30 clarinets vs. 10 trombones vs. 3 tubas) and everyone was bound and determined to play as loud as they could, dynamics be damned. stare It didn't really help that the recording system that was supposed to work out the balance issues just made them worse.

It blew my mind when I started college band. The instrumentation was carefully arranged (via cutthroat auditions) and people actually paid attention to dynamics. The recording system was also much better in general (and more expensive), so we've got some pretty awesome recordings of our shows/cadences. 3nodding

Every time we record something for the color guard, all you hear is DRUMS. I feel bad for the flags, because they actually need to hear the music to practice to. We always record for them indoors and of course, the percussion instructor tells them to play loud EVERYWHERE, even inside. confused

I thought we did pretty good in our field show.
Then I saw a parent had recorded it so we decided to watch it.
...It was horrible.
Color guard = eek i had no idea what they were doing.
Trumpets = couldnt reach a few high notes so it threw some people off.
Percussion = ALL i heard was them, they sped up and everyone followed i was wondering if the drum major was even needed anymore!
stressed GAH blaugh
It was horrible....

Once we played this song for Symphonic Band called Sailors and Whales.
The 3rd movement requires singing.
OH man. Thank GOD we worked on vocals and managed to get second.
