Jaina sat in the middle of an empty meditation room. Her skills of awareness were hardly something to be proud of. She did not like the prospect of failing at the basics. With her eyes closed she could sense the energies of those in the hall and on the first floor. She was impressed at how much she could "see."
Yet, when she opened her eyes, she can only see faint traces of what surrounds a person. It annoyed her. She didn't know who to ask for help. Another student? She didn't know any. And talking to those above her scared her oddly. She had no issue talking to the Knights who brought her here, but what was the chances of her finding someone?
Sighing, Jaina tried once more to stretch the range of her meditated force awareness. This time as she opened her eyes, she could only feel a glimmer of anyone close to the door. All of four people. Jaina seemed to be failing.

Jiri Yim jogged through the halls of the temple, lost in thought and concentrating on the datapad in her hand. One window was displaying her notes for tomorrow's Galactic Policy exam. The other was a communique from home, and that was what she was presently focused on. Written in her mother's precise glyphs was,
We've been transferred to another settlement. Altore Boltek has coordinates for your next visit. Study hard!
Only her mother could sound cheerful over what was obviously government interference in her work. Jiri sighed and turned a corner. She was due for some meditation to collect her thoughts - as it were, she wasn't paying attention to the Force at all right now, as sometimes happened when she was thinking about other things. Her preferred room was up ahead. She slowed her pace as she approached, opened the door, and slipped inside. Only then did she realize the room was already occupied.
"New student," she grunted in observation. "Hope I'm not interrupting."
She motioned for the far corner of the room. "I'll just, er..."

Jaina jumped as an older student entered the room. She could see a somewhat brighter field around the girl. "Oh no I am sorry. I should have known that this room is for apprentices. I'll leave."
Jaina wasn't sure how to react to this student. Would she be a mean one or one super nice? She might as well just offer to leave to see what kind of person was. "You weren't interfering. I was just trying to extend my connection with the force.

"You don't need to leave," shrugged Jiri. "There aren't too many apprentices who need this room, anyway." She smiled a bit - it looked kind of unnatural - and the dark skin beneath her eyes tensed. "I remember that lesson," she sympathized. "It always gave me a bit of trouble when I first started."
She hopped up onto the carpeted ledge that ran around the edge of the room and looked down at the girl again. She'd never seen her before.
"Are you one of the younglings that Knight Den and Knight Orphala brought back?" she asked.

This apprentice seemed fairly nice. Not exactly human looking, but nice nevertheless. " Oh really? How did you become able to like sense the force with your eyes open? Yes. I'm the older twin, Jaina. Do both temples know that much about us? I've barely gotten used to everything."
Jaina was a little worried. If everyone knew something, why was she being left in the dark? She was very talkative today. She didn't talk much to Vi today, maybe she needed living interaction and not droid interaction.

"Practice," said Jiri, with a bit of a laugh. "It's always going to be easier with your eyes closed, at least it is for me. Vision's a distraction. The Miraluka have the right idea." Then again, this was the girl who channeled the Force through pain on a regular basis, so maybe it was different for everyone.
"I don't know about you, really," she continued, shrugging. "I just heard about you. It's a small order. People talk."
"I'm Jiri Yim - don't drop the domain name, it's a respect thing. Whoever named you must've had a thing for historical figures."

Jiri Yim was hard to follow. "Mira-who?" she asked her face tight in concentration. Maybe she missed some important lesson. As she was deep in thought an worry Jiri started taking about her. "Heard about me? What's there to hear? I haven't talked to anyone. Historical? What do you mean? No one is named Jaina. It's a stupid name that isn't common. I'm sure someone back home had your name Jiri...Yim."
It was hard for Jaina to think of anyone have the name Jaina. Who would name their daughter such an odd name. Why not Hannah or Alex. Those were common, right?

"Miraluka," repeated Jiri. "They haven't got eyes. I think there's one or two in the Sith temple. And I'm sure there is; domain Yim isn't exactly small."
She shifted into a stretch and leaned towards one of her outstretched legs as she continued to talk. It seemed weird to her that the girl had no knowledge of her famous namesake, but then again, maybe there were some people who hadn't grown up on a steady diet of Jeedai heresy. "I wouldn't call it stupid. She was a great Jeedai in Luke Skywalker's order. My people thought she was a goddess."
Jiri didn't generally have any sort of accent. She spoke Basic well enough, and the Tizowyrm helped her where she had gaps, but she maintained the affected use of the word 'Jeedai' from her mother tongue instead of the more widely-used 'Jedi'. It was personal preference more than anything.

Jaina nodded. She understood now. "Really?" her eyes were lighting up now. "No way! That is cool! Can you tell me more? What about the name Jacen?"
Jaina had scampered out of her spot and sat across Jiri fascinated. She looked as if she would be interested in anything that Jiri said. Jaina never thought her name was that great. But with the revelation that a famous Jedi shared her name, Jaina was now focused on being a great Jedi, one to make the old Jaina proud.

"You haven't learned much galactic history, have you?" asked Jiri, stretching towards the other side. "The Solo family's everywhere if you go about two centuries back. I think they're dead in the male line now."
"Jaina Solo and Jacen Solo were members of the Jeedai order under Luke Skywalker. This is about twenty-five, thirty years after the fall of Palpatine's empire - you'll learn about that once you're in history lessons. The... most people call it the 'invasion' and I haven't found a better word yet, so let's go with that- happens. Jaina Solo emerges as the Avatar of Yun Harla. Jacen Solo accepts the True Way and is associated with Yun Shuno. The Trickster and the Pardoner."
She paused to catch her breath and collect her thoughts. Usually she didn't talk this much, but the kid's curiosity was infectious and galactic history, combined with a good dose of Yuuzhan Vong mythology, was something she genuinely knew top-to-bottom.
"Are you following this?" she asked.

Jaina nodded again. "Totally! Please tell more. So I'm named after a really well-know jedi? That's big shoes to fill." Jaina continued to listen, it was better than any story she could make up.
As she listened, Jaina realized that she could fail, really badly. If she was to ever be like Jaina Solo then she better focus more on studies and everything.

Jiri didn't smile, but the skin beneath her eyes did the same little tensing thing as before - something of a species equivalent. Yuuzhan Vong was a language spoken with the eyes as well as the voice. "There are good teachers here," she said, "And if you find a good master..."
"They were well-known during the war," she nodded, "And they weren't much older than I am now. Most of the stories I know are just folklore, though."

She nodded her head. "That is so cool. Thank you for sharing Jiri Yim. So have any advice for a new youngling?" Jaina seemed to be curious. What else could she learn from this apprentice? Was there a secret that would help Jaina fill the shoes that her namesake had left her?

Jiri nodded approvingly at the girl, impressed that she remembered the bit about not dropping the Domain name. "Listen to your teachers, do your lessons, impress a good master, and eat your vegetables," she said, laughing a bit.

Jaina smirked and bowed her head in a gesture of thanks. "Is there any specific way to impress a master? Or should I just be myself and hope for the best?" Jaina did want to learn some tricks but she felt restless. She really needed to get back to Vi. Jaina would hear a little more before bowing out, it seemed polite to listen and learn, especially from a willing older student.
